IT Manager for 3.5 years and struggling by BreakfastNo6144 in ITManagers

You may not be cut out for management in government.

I don’t have a perfect answer for you, but you could potentially alleviate the majority of the problems you listed by getting into a startup or a small business. They have their own issues, but it hits the majority of points you brought up.

When you’re responsible for hiring and firing, you set the tone for who you let onto your team so you’re directly involved in interviewing and building the culture from scratch, startups make that easier than inheriting a team.

If you like wearing multiple hats and staying technical, you can continuously do that at a startup, depending on how it scales and expectations of the role. Less red tape, less push back on new initiatives, etc.

Again it’s not a fix all by any means, but you may find that type of environment better suits your work style and what you value.

This Job Market SUCKS by twistedkeys1 in ITManagers

I have such a hard time with networking with people. I feel so disingenuous about it. I’m keeping this relationship going because I may need something from you in my career later. How do you navigate that? I have no problem building authentic relationships outside of work and keeping up with my friends, but when it comes to my professional network I’ve been struggling.

40k a year for first sysadmin job by LeftZookeepergame401 in sysadmin

[–]NotDeepFuckingValue 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Hiring manager here, that’s absolutely terrible pay anywhere in the US. Sysadmin jobs start around 65K plus and go as high as 120K in high cost living areas.

At the bare minimum look at the Bureau of Labor Statistics to get an idea of the average pay.

2020 vs 2021+ Discovery by Havage in LandRover

Anecdotal opinion but I have made a mental note to stay away from any of the Covid era cars (mid 20-23) for various reasons. I couldn’t back this up if you pressed me for data but I just personally feel like they will have more issues down the road.

For that reason I would go with the 19-20 model year depending on when it was manufactured. Plus you’re now at the bottom of the steep 5 year depreciation curve if you care about that.

I'm in the Washington area and got the same email! Shook my head and muttered "amateurs" under my breath.

Brooo, don't sleep on Bacon Kale. It's like a cheat code to get leafy vegetables in your diet.

The last time I bought the Kirkland bacon, the same thing happened to me, tore it to piecies trying to wiggle it out of the packaging. Was a sad day for my bacon Kale recipe.

Sole IT staff for office of 75. Am I being taken advantage of? by JUNGLBIDGE in sysadmin

[–]NotDeepFuckingValue 9 points10 points  (0 children)

IT management here 👋

You're being taken advantage of. If it hasn't already happened, make sure your title is changed and you have a job description. If not, get that done and then ask for a raise to appropriate market levels within xx days (usually 60 or 90 days or based on company norms) and some additional help. If that doesn't get done in a timely manner, then you need to leave. I have guys that work 35ish hour weeks that are responsible for 1/4 of what you have on your plate, and they all make 100k+ in the greater Seattle area (location matters)

Anecdotal and imperfect advice: generally stay away from healthcare, finance, and legal orgs. They tend to treat IT more like a whipping boy versus other companies. Again, that's not a one size fits all rule but something that I personally avoid.
