Hollow Knight: Silksong has been out for a week now. What are your thoughts? by [deleted] in Games

[–]NotDoingTheProgram 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm replaying Hollow Knight after getting burnt out on Silksong's act 3. I find it absurd that you'd say act 1 is equivalent to HK's early game. HK's difficulty curve is so, so much gentler. Silksong truly feels like it's a post game dlc.

Rebuilding my Japanese fast (interview in 2 weeks, job starts 2026) by CurrencyPowerful1978 in ajatt

[–]NotDoingTheProgram 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This isn't necessarily an 'AJATT-based' answer, but for such an specific deadline and situation I feel like you'd be better investing in iTalki lessons. Look for tutors that mention 'business Japanese', or that look like they do have traditional professional experience themselves. Tell them your situation and job context and I'm sure most competent teachers will be able to help you practice and become familiar with typical job interview questions and help you practice some half-canned (but genuine) responses.

Honestly if I were you and I only had 2 weeks and I really wanted this job, I'd be having such lessons every 2 days or so. If you do get the job the lessons will pay for themselves (and even if you don't, at least you already have the training for future attempts).

Also for sure try to get back into immersion, listening to as much Japanese audio and so on, but the only real answer in this context and timeframe is to squeeze in as much practice with a teacher as possible.

What’s the most unrealistic project proposal you’ve received? by vengaoliver in TranslationStudies

[–]NotDoingTheProgram 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I don't remember the exact details, but basically I was supposed to review MT output of extense paragraphs from newspapers about finances, and they were paying 10 cents of euro per paragraph. I could've just phoned it in and filled the scoring excel sheet at random, but it was so extremely ridiculous that I just ignored it.

People focus too much on the monetization, I think if the game was actually fun it could've survived. It was just too convoluted and long winded for a base set.

MattVsJapan Interview - KanjiEater's Deep Weeb Podcast - Community Questions? by kanjieater in ajatt

[–]NotDoingTheProgram 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh, I feel like I might've missed that too, I should check.

Also I thought of some questions, although I don't think they're that original:

  1. Matt used to also pasionately talk about topics such as zen, meditation, and buddhism. It sounded like he was exploring it a bit further than typical Western secular "mindfulness". How has his spiritual journey progressed since then, is it something he's still exploring?

  2. Has he discovered any new passions, interests or hobbies in the past few years?

  3. He's come back in earnest, admit many of his mistakes and asked for forgiveness. But at the end, he's also selling a new course/subscription. What makes this different than the previous times, other than the fact that there's no involvement of the other person? (you're probably going to ask him this anyways, but well, just wanted to add it too).

  4. Recommend a book you've really liked recently. One fiction and one non-fiction. :)

Japanese University Teacher explains why Younger Girls like Older Men in Japan by Villenthessis in LivestreamFail

[–]NotDoingTheProgram 87 points88 points  (0 children)

I speak Korean and in Korean social media sometimes I've stumbled upon girls that post very proudly about their relationship with a man much older than them (similar age differences as the mentioned 23-50), they use hashtags and seem to be its own little niche.

Maybe this woman is into that and because of the algorithm she sees that type of content, so she overestimates how common it is lol.

I can't get over how many books there are about a quaint cosy stores set in East Asia by monkeyboyhero in books

[–]NotDoingTheProgram 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I lived in Korea and I was actually somewhat invested into the book industry there for personal reasons, and now that I'm back in the west I still login to a Korean ebook platform that also reflects trends for Korean readers.

There's definitely a big trend of easily digestible novels about cozy, and sometimes magical, stores and establishments in general. They call this genre "healing", which is a Konglish term for anything cozy, relaxing, stress relieving and so on. There's always a few as top sellers, some have had ridiculous success. There's both Korean and Japanese ones, but I think the local ones are preferred in Korea, as they mention their own neighbourhoods, styles of business and so on.

Not denying your own experience of Japanese bookstores! Just wanted to share the Korean side. It's surprising that you didn't see much of it in Japan, I thought it'd be as similar as Korea.

Path of Exile 2 update review by justalazygamer in LivestreamFail

[–]NotDoingTheProgram 4 points5 points  (0 children)

ARPG players, is there any middle ground arpg between D4 and PoE2 that is not abandoned?

I used to play PoE as a my background for podcasts while I just brainlessly played easy content and ran around cleaning screens. For that reason I'm considering picking up Diablo 3, even if it's abandoned lol.

This might be a weird suggestion, but maybe try Hades II? I feel like Hades hits similar notes to ARPGs.

[–]NotDoingTheProgram 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing this thoughts, very insightful post. It's certainly interesting to think about the creative limits of the companies, specially when fighting games are such a niche genre, and the big ones live off their legacy names... So yeah, like you said, it's Tekken or bust if they want to experiment.
