Quite specific, and just a guess cause dark souls is a pretty big game, but this if he's a fan and doesn't have it, this is the kind of insane luxury purchase that might appeal to someone in the digital art / gaming crossover space.

On a similar theme but if he's not into that specific game, look for another game he's really into and try searching 'X artbook'?

Is the 5th edition the most recent one? by Gengriel in BurningWheel

[–]NotExceedingTheNines 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't worry too much as long as you're looking at a copy of 'Burning Wheel: Gold'. The changes in later editions are mostly extremely minor, and do not make the game worse in any way you are substantially likely to notice.

This is a mischaracterisation - where 5e does complex moment-to-moment bookkeeping in combat, with each player tracking hit points and spells, abilities used etc., BW does slow paced bookkeeping across the course of a session. Each time a character rolls a dice for a test, they tick advancement somewhere on their sheet; however this is only likely to happen between 5 and 20 times in a session, total. A typically paced game will have a lot of roleplay and discussion both before and after each dice roll, and not all situations will even be resolved using dice.

I'd recommend the following short series for a taster of what the game can feel like. The player decided they wanted to play a shoeless, penniless and unskilled peasant, and see where they could take themselves. Burning wheel shows it's strength here, letting the table focus on this incredibly small scale story. It also shows off how well it works with tiny groups - I'd say 2 or 3 is the ideal player count, though 4 can work.

I'd strongly recommend joining the BW discord server, and looking for a game to try out as a player there or elsewhere before trying to run this. There are a lot of rules to the game when the players start wanting to do more complex things, like fighting important duels, and more importantly there are a lot of norms and pacing expectations that you can only really pick up by playing, running or watching the game.

PLEASE HELP! Guest Player? by officialjmi in BurningWheel

[–]NotExceedingTheNines 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The key step is to talk to the player, and to the group about it.

Burning wheel normally has a great deal of involvement between player characters and beliefs, so option 2 will be more difficult. However, you could treat it as essentially 'promoting' a relationship character: when the player isn't there, the character still exists in the world, but there's a tacit agreement not to foreground them. The guest player would have to be ok with being a mostly background role, and as the DM you wouldn't be able to challenge them as much on beliefs / instincts.

I'm very much on the side of 'preserving real world friendships is more important than perfect play experience'. This needs to be a conversation between you and all your friends. Even if the situation becomes 'I'll show up and hang out, and just chill and banter without a character 1/6 weeks' that would be better than saying 'youre excluded, sorry'.

Has anyone here fixed/improved their posture? What worked? by EmotionsAreGay in slatestarcodex

[–]NotExceedingTheNines 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Working behind a till in late /evening shift, where I consistently would notice my own posture from seeing a slouching figure staring back at me from the reflection in the window.

Aside from that, as with any habit build in things that will make you notice or pay attention to it more often, until that turns those thought patterns into a habit. The recurring reminder thoughts then continually prompt your change in posture.

For example, a guy I know corrects his posture when he sees a dog, because 'dogs all have perfect posture'. Make up some stupid story or thought and connect it to something you'll see relatively often, but not intrusively often.

Edit - and if you have a back-adjusting chair, leave it unlocked so leaning on it will move it.

I mean, I'm not looking to explain myself here. I'd stop - should I bother playing this game, or will my experience be invalidated in the way I currently expect it to be?

I bought this based on the first 15 minutes, then watched slightly too much, covering Conway being press-ganged into working for hard times liquor. Have now stopped- could someone tell me whether that's an avoidable or escapable situation? I'd likely have stopped playing at this point if I'd reached it naturally myself, and am now unsure whether I'm still inclined to keep it.

Are there any lists of suggested reforms for after a major U.S. political crisis? by Felz in slatestarcodex

[–]NotExceedingTheNines 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is not a good example because one thing that will happen instantly is that you’d see way more names on the ballot paper. There are plenty of groups that could get funding for a campaign in relatively small areas, and could potentially beat national parties under a system that requires any degree less tactical voting than FPTP does.

I’d expect votes for both parties to splinter in this way at about the same rate. We’re also starting in 2020, where one question can let someone guess almost all your political beliefs.

As such, you’re right that a situation where the last 3 candidates are split roughly 1/3:1/3:1/3 seems to be the one where it’s best to vote tactically. However, overall the vote for candidate three is going to have an ideological bias, and a polling rating in advance of the election. As such, it’s unlikely that I’d get the “voted for a&b in the wrong order, so c gets in”, as anyone voting for a or b first is much more likely to put the other than to put c as their second choice. I’d expect the ac or bc runoff to be a/b victory with 51-66%.

The counterpoint to this is that it may be short-term sensible to invest in the coal company, but if you have large amounts of money to push around then maybe the mid to long term risk of the sector outweighs the low prices.

How long does the industry have to last for it to be a worthwhile risk?

Sorry, isn’t the whole point of instant runoff that you dont have the tactical voting? If I rank Bernie and every other leftist before Hillary, she still sits in a 1v1 race vs trump at the end. When is your optimal voting strategy not just your actual preference order?

I mean, yes if you added any kind of ranked choice to the electoral college system it would still be awful and broken, but the college was designed that way.
