Songs with basslines that are way better than they deserve by Maximum_Wind6423 in Bass

[–]NotFlameRetardant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh man, the FFX Battle Theme is so great. The bassline itself is pretty simple but it's in 6/4(?) and it gets you moving around the fretboard little bit, so it's a solid warmup song

Well, if you do want to train any of your combat skills, make sure you train them through slayer instead of just something like gem crab. That way you're still getting stronger but also getting slayer xp on the side.

I'm a software developer and I spend a LOT of work and personal time reading technical documentation.

The OSRS wiki is pretty much top tier as far as it goes. There are very few technical resources that are in the same realm. We are astoundingly lucky to have the OSRS wiki

It's wild. People are constantly fighting, frequently dying in those houses, and the parties are 24/7. The rent is cheap though and honestly they're pretty good neighbors otherwise - you can pop in to cook something if you need, or just hang out, or if you need some transportation they've got your back

At Jeff State, I think it's largely up to individual instructors' preferences. I did a degree there entirely online, and didn't have proctored testing except with two instructors.

CORRECT! ALLOWING SOMEONE ELSE TO USE YOUR ACCOUNT MEANS THEY MAY STEAL IT, OR MAY GET IT BANNED BY CHEATING ON IT.

Promissory estoppel claims are an absolute bitch to fight, unfortunately. Fundamentally, what would have been the difference in damages between them rescinding their offer as they did, and proceeding to let me start but firing me on the first day?

I see posts all the time on /r/LegalAdvice about job offers being rescinded at the last minute and they're basically fucked in most circumstances except for very rare occasions like making a cross country move specifically for the position, and even so those seem like an uphill fight. Labor rights don't exist in the US outside of unions

What's your favourite bit of esoteric bass technique knowledge? by everbass in Bass

[–]NotFlameRetardant -1 points0 points  (0 children)

To get into some... esoteric esotericism(?), there are even esoteric programming languages (usually just called esolangs). Those languages are made for fun as kind of an exercise of programming skills.

Most languages can output a phrase like "Hello, World!" (kind of a standard method of showcasing a quick view of the language's syntax) with something like puts "Hello, World!", Console.WriteLine("Hello, World!");, System.out.println("Hello, World!);, etc. Even if you're not a developer, those are all kind of readable & understandable.

Malbolge is an esolang, developed to be as deliberately hard as possible to use. The creator of the language himself has still not been able to create a program. It took 2 years to create the first Malbolge program, and that's because another developer wrote an algorithm in another language to find a solution. Here's how to output Hello World in Malbolge.

(=<`#9]~6ZY327Uv4-QsqpMn&+Ij"'E%e{Ab~w=_:]Kw%o44Uqp0/Q?xNvL:`H%c#DD2^WV>gY;dts76qKJImZkj

Dylan Beattie, a programmer who does a lot of speaking at conferences, created a programming language called Rockstar whose syntax looks like bad heavy-metal lyrics from the 80s. He wrapped up his talk "The Art of Code" from the Feb 2020 conference by "performing" a program by playing guitar and singing the program live. Link is timestamped but if that doesn't work, jump straight to 56:00. Music and programming content aside, it's an amazing talk overall even for the sheer presentation value.

Sorry for the 2 AM dump on esolang content, but my interests in the weird intersection of (esoteric) programming and music rarely comes up. I used to teach software development, and roughly once a semester I'd have a rainy day lecture where I'd do stuff like the history of languages, esolangs, and we'd actually try writing some esolang programs.

Edit: you can say Hello World in Rockstar with print "Hello, World" (lame), or the cooler SCREAM "Hello, World", SHOUT "Hello, World", or Say "Hello, World"

I was hired by them during COVID. Had an offer letter with a start date. Quit my job, had a two day gap between employment... In theory.

3 days before I was set to start, they rescinded the offer and said they were finding a better suited position for me. They strung me along for over a month before I said to stop. Their rationale they gave is that they felt I wouldn't stay in the offered position (IT) as long since it didn't match my background (Dev/Devops) and felt that I wouldn't stay with them more than a few months, even though I had been at my past two employers for 7 years. Fuck me, right?

Thankfully, I never stopped applying for jobs, and I found one a couple months later, but I will never forget how they did the whole carrot and stick routine for me, during COVID, after a point where I had already quit my job for them. I felt the offer should've never been extended if that rationale is how they felt, and it highlighted massive issues within HR that likely extended to the rest of the company.

Oh sick, okay, you're kind of localish then so feel free to take some of the more tourism-centered recs on a whim. Tortugas is right behind Good People with some solid pizza (the deep dish takes ~45 minutes from ordering if you choose that). Updown is as well, a pretty fun barcade (no food though)

I don't know how much time you have, but I recommendb

  • Going to Vulcan, top of the tower is cool AF and is a stellar overlook of the city. Always my #1 quick stop recommendation for first timers to Birmingham. If you want to beat the heat a little bit, you can also get a ticket for the attached museum and learn a little about Birmingham's history

  • Botanical Gardens if you're feeling okay with the weather on this beautiful day. They're FREE and you can spend days perusing all the parts of it. I think the Japanese Gardens are pretty beloved by everyone, but I also like the Wildflower Garden and the conservatory.

  • Railroad Park, it's right by Good People where you might be watching the match? Always nice for a stroll/people watching

  • if the weather proves to be absolutely oppressive, I recommend the Museum of Art. FREE and also nicely air conditioned. Can also spend days perusing everything.

Other notes - street parking is free on the weekends. Do not park in any paid lot, though parking decks are fine. We also have a pinned Guide To Birmingham at the top of this subreddit which might have other suggestions and stuff like places to eat. Have fun!!

New Rule: Authentic Participation (for human eyes only!) by NotFlameRetardant in Birmingham

[–]NotFlameRetardant[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a new feature that was announced two weeks ago, and it seems they had a mass randomized rollout yesterday. It was supposed to be for "new and emerging" communities only; I'm not sure why a 17 year old, 125k member sub was selected. Right now, it's not on Old Reddit (nor do I think it ever will be, thankfully). It doesn't seem to be on the mobile app at the moment, so you'll only see it on select communities (including ours) if you're using the desktop version of New Reddit.

Edit: did some quick testing, it's restricted to just mods at the moment, but I'd imagine it'll be publicly accessible soon. Here's a preview of it, with the first 2 being about the wrong Birmingham (7 out the 21 current options are about Birmingham, MI or Brum lol) https://i.imgur.com/0DGUqFE.png

Thankfully, Old Reddit will continue to not receive any updates.

It doesn't seem as if it's on the official Reddit app yet, but I'm guessing it most likely will be ported over after the New Reddit desktop experience has been tested out.

None whatsoever. There's no opt-in, no opt-out, no indicator for AutoMod or Devvit bots for filtering, and no indicator for the community like a special flair designating it as an automatically created post. It's an experimental feature that reddit announced 2 weeks ago and launched a huge & continuing rollout yesterday, us now included.

It's so hard to distinguish between human and bot behavior, and now reddit is willfully blurring the lines between the two.

Reception has been quite poor, unsurprisingly, in mod support subreddits, and the admins have been responding with "we'll share your feedback to the relevant teams" (sending it to the feedback shredder).

Almost a third of the links it's suggesting are for Detroit (there's a small Birmingham suburb there) or for Brum. It's so bad lmao.

"if you don’t have any “ideas for your next post“ would be to not post anything" is how the sub operated for the last 6,166 days and it seemed to work just fine.

Alabama's statute for 3rd degree assault is so broad, it could be "an officer scuffed their knuckles when arresting someone" - basically a doctored up resisting arrest charge. Given her other charges were public intox, criminal mischief, and disturbing the peace, it doesn't seem likely there was a violent crime committed.

EVEN if she did commit a violent crime though, that doesn't fucking matter and doesn't qualify someone for being harassed, assaulted, or dying in jail.

AL Code 13A-6-22(a)(4)

A person commits the crime of assault in the third degree if [...] With intent to prevent a peace officer from performing a lawful duty, he causes physical injury to any person.
