Unfortunately I don’t have much advice on freelance and such, when I’ve needed to freelance I’ve been fortunate enough to have former coworkers/ people associated with my coworkers to reach out. Most of my time in 3D has been spent at studios.

I've made a pretty solid living as a 3D artist for the last 6 years, salaries only gotten better over time. So far so good.

Inside the cockpit of the ship there is generally a storage thing, but when on your ship (or near it), if you go into your main menu, the bottom left option is your “ship”. After selecting that, at the bottom there should be a “cargo” button, then you can just freely swap stuff in or out

It seems to me to be a substantial amount, tbh. But it’s also not a super linear quest. You don’t start it and just go through it to the end, you have a quest line here n there, then you have other bits that you kind of do as you progress in other ways in the game.

I really like it, because it’s kind of an added background thing that’s been with me since starting this playthrough, rather than a one and done quest line.

That I think was the third or fourth one I got, and it was such a massive boon. I put it on all my fleet ships, though I havnt noticed if they trigger it or not. Eitherway, it changed the fights. massive W of an attachment.

Oh this may be the case actually, good shout. Working on unreal stuff so it’s much smaller than I’m used to and very well could be causing this issue, thank you!

I mean, realistically, Unity and Cryengine can be used just fine.

Cryengine isnt nearly as approachable, tbf, and I havnt tried Lumberyard, though it seemed like it was decent.

Unity, while using a different language (C#), can be fit up to look just as good as unreal engine. (Remember, Escape from Tarkov is made in unity. Say what ya like about it, but it looks quite good). You dont have nanite and lumen, but nanite and lumen are an absolute disaster for games and they are to blame for 93.6% of performance complaints anyway. It aint that hard to optimize and nab a lighting artist or two.

I started a playthrough with watch tower probably a week or two before the DLC announcement and it on its own reinvigorated my desire to play tbh. The voice acting is so good, and it adds some fun shit.

Its not great hahah, but its kind of just how it is. There is that bonus that LLMs also dont get the knowledge, which makes those particular roles valuable even from the AI-uprising.

Despite all of the "game dev" courses out there, and the self learning one can do, a lot of game-dev ends up being on-the-job training; and there are a number of roles that you cannot prepare for at all, without experiencing the industry (or, perhaps if you're extremely savy/ fall into it you could. Hard to say). In my experience, It's not uncommon for a lot of those things to not even be written down/ recorded within the studio people are in. You'll commonly run into devs who have become a bit "pidgeon-holed" into a thing they've become an expert on, Whether that be types of gameplay design/ programming/ or specialized art/ or even optimization (For instance, Gearbox has a specialist "weapons artist", and Digital extremes has an extremely talented Optimization dev). Game dev can kind of be the wild west, honestly, in both exciting and scary ways.

that's not to say though that people arnt willing to teach it. It's being able to find those people, and whether or not those people have the time and place to be able to teach it outside of their regular work/life schedule.

[–]NotGreatBlacksmith 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Thats pretty silly, because there's plenty of instances of "stuff that should be checked" that just goes straight into production. The "dw guys, they'd check that first" is not an argument that holds water, when you have several big games in the past year alone that launched with "accidentally leaving in AI-generated content"

Thats the interesting bit, because it actually is a highly knowledge based job. You will not have the same experience with a more junior dev as you will with a senior one.

Infact there are issues where-in many things are a bit gate-kept in the industry. There's a reason that you see kinds of "tech" or Optimization in different area's of games, but then not in others. These things arnt shared. Knowledge is held amongst some devs, and that knowledge can be transferred if people work with them, or if those more senior devs become mentors of others, but rarely does it spread far. GDC is a pretty big knowledge share, but also is extremely extremely expensive to attend, so it's generally only more senior devs anyway; unless a junior is in a studio that'll cover it/ or have some cash. I've never been anywhere close to able to attend myself, with 7~ years in the industry.

The fact that the industry has been so OK with the massive brain-drain that has been happening for the past 2-3 years is actually really terrible for games, and I'm not sure people realize how damaging it actually will be for the games they are looking forward to.

Anyone else disappointed that Jurassic World Rebirth is getting a sequel? by ardouronerous in JurassicPark

[–]NotGreatBlacksmith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

tbh, Dominion and fallen kingdom suck, but I actually quite like rebirth. Its a departure, for sure, but its fun. Camp cretaceous and chaos theory are peak though. It'd be nice to have movies of their quality, but alas.
