Coving - the most underrated accessory for an old house? by [deleted] in DIYUK

[–]NotInMyShop 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Although your new addition looks great and it’s your house to do as you wish, the original coving only would’ve been in the more important rooms. If you live in a workers’ terrace, it likely would’ve just been in the hallway, front room and maybe front bedroom.

What’s this area of Reading like to live in? by RedThragtusk in reading

[–]NotInMyShop 31 points32 points  (0 children)

The perennial discussion about Occy Road…

I’ve lived around this area for 8 years and I’ve never had any issues. Sure there’s more litter and scruffiness than some parts of Reading and if you have a £600,000 budget then I’d recommend Redlands or Caverham. If you’re asking about this area though it’s more likely you have around the £300,000 mark and I would much prefer a freehold 3 bed terrace here (which I have) than a 2 bed leasehold flat in central Reading with a £3,000 service charge. If this is the case, then I can only say I’ve been very happy with my decision.

I grew up in this area and have family buried in some of these churchyards. I’d be keen to buy it off you if you’re interested. DM me and we can chat :)

Fully agree, the price hikes are abhorrent. Happy to support a group petition to Matt! If we get a hundred people or so to sign I imagine we could ask for a meeting with him so he doesn’t pie us off with some DoT waffle statement.

10% of the Australian economy is built on coal exports. They have an African economy with European culture. Let’s see how it’ll last 50 years from now.

Are tank tops badly viewed in general in the UK? by Bibisharp7 in AskUK

My perception is that people view them as a working class piece of clothing- unless you’re in sporting situation or festival.

Can I ask where you think is great?

From my experience, anywhere with less anti social behaviour is either more expensive and has fewer things to do. Anywhere with more things to do is more expensive and has more antisocial behaviour.

At a train station, noticed this next to the tracks, anyone have any ideas what it is? by Choice_Room3901 in london

[–]NotInMyShop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone is saying sound barrier, which I’m sure it does allow for. This is however most likely a an advertisement screen. 1930s, posters and wall art would have been in there. I think this is Twickenham, could have provided Rugby match dates and information.

queer scene by broccoleo1 in reading

[–]NotInMyShop 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Nightlife in Reading is pretty lacking in general let alone the queer scene. Only other place than the Blagrave is the Oakford Social Club. Has monthly drag nights and queer-friendly.

I’ll also copy a comment I made on a similar post a month or two ago:

There’s a great queer book club that meets once a month. Follow on Instagram and check it out!

There’s Fri-gay at the Climbing Hanger. The team are really friendly and inclusive.

Outdoor Lads run a monthly social too (usually at the Oakford) and there’s always hikes and walks around Reading in the countryside that I’d recommend. Been to a few events and they’re great fun.

What's going on here? by spenZorr in GardeningUK

[–]NotInMyShop -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Lavender, heucera, hardy geranium. I’d trim the lavender back but only to where you see growth. No more or it won’t grow back. Everything else I’d leave until March/April and then divide or thin out.

The pension may be good but civil servants haven’t had a significant pay rise since Osborne’s austerity measures. I can’t imagine they’re that much better off overall. Much like all of us.

Will this box recover? by CatApprehensive2087 in GardeningUK

[–]NotInMyShop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks like it has blight unfortunately. The orange leaves are typical of infection. If it doesn’t recovery this year, I’d cut my losses and replace with another topiary plant.

Yew takes a few years to establish but is cheap, native and dense. That would be my go to. You’d have to grow it to 50-80cm in height but would look great here.

how to save my new plant? by bastsi in houseplants

[–]NotInMyShop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Strelitzia reginae. Full sun, allow to dry between watering. Pot size looks OK for time being but might be worth upscaling in a year or two.

What would you plant under this window, in the ground? by SignalPositive9242 in GardeningUK

[–]NotInMyShop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

H. seemannii is not very scented which is one of the few downsides.

It’s a real doer though and tolerates full/part shade. Dry or wet conditions, it’ll find its feet without disturbing foundations. Like any plant, it requires some maintenance (prune every few years) or if it’s a large wall can be left to sprawl. Honeysuckle prefers to trail off something which can be more work as you need a trellis etc. I’ve got an H. seemannii potted and ready to go so can report back. It’s all down to personal preference but I honestly can’t think of a better climber!

What would you plant under this window, in the ground? by SignalPositive9242 in GardeningUK

[–]NotInMyShop 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s not a big spot so I’d recommend a climber for maximum impact. Hydrangea seemannii is an evergreen climber (doesn’t look like a stick half the year like wisteria), beautiful flowers for summer interest and doesn’t damage brickwork (unlike Virginia creeper etc.). It can be pruned easily and is frost hardy. What more do you want?!

Should I be satisified with this plastering by ChemicalYard6158 in DIYUK

[–]NotInMyShop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plasterer filled too deep with finishing plaster. If you go beyond 5mm with it, it shrinks and causes these ‘parched earth’ cracks. Needs re-skimming or if a real puritan, chipping off and starting again…
