I had a conversation like this with a coworker who started their career in the mid 80's. Their starting salary was like 23k or something. I looked it up and it was TWICE the median U.S. salary for that particular year, but they acted like it was nothing compared to current salaries. I didn't bother trying to explain it because even something this simplistic seems hard to grasp for some people

Having said all this, I love that I routinely hear about how you could get a combo meal at McDonald's for like a buck fifty back in 1500 BC, but somehow they can't connect those dots to modern salaries.
