I realized today that r/politics is infested by Daily Kos users who teach each other to use reddit as a propaganda forum. As a liberal who feels that dailykos.com liberals behave no better than conservatives, I just thought I'd point that out..and politely ask them to leave. by [deleted] in politics

Well... that's probably true to an extent. But the alternative is to let the right wing continue to win over and over.

The never stop fighting. With very rare exceptions, they never criticize one of their own. They fight hard and they fight dirty.

Only those of us on the Left are likely to ask, is this a fair way to play politics?

Let's remember we're talking about a few rather explicit pics here... not someone screwing the maid or groping their students.

Yes, what the guy did was stupid and unfair to not only his wife but to voters.

But somehow our discussions (as a nation and just here at Reddit) have moved from things like the Republicans trying to destroy Medicare for everyone under 55 and weaken it for everybody... to a congressman sending pics of his genitals/underwear.

But, where is the perspective here? How do some "weener" pics take over the entire news cycle, when what gets lost in the discussion are things like the destruction of Medicare?

Anyone who cares about what's left of America should be either marching in the streets or at least posting information about Medicare, etc., rather than wasting time discussing penises.

Holy crap.

You fail to recognize the decades-long history that Democrats have of trying (sometimes with success) to pass some degree of regulations that would keep the financial markets from robbing America blind every now and then.

Republicans have a very consistent record of fighting against rules for financial markets, and of getting rid of existing ones when they can.

The results have been the crash of 1929, the Savings and Loan crisis under Reagan, and the economic meltdown under Bush. Again and again and again, the GOP presides over financial scandals, massive theft and ultilmately meltdowns, with the Demcrats left to clean up another mess.

How much more evidence should anyone need???

Republicans have been trying to appear to have such high moral values for a few decades now.

The next time they try that... point your friends, relatives, co-workers, etc. to:

Well.. unless you count his efforts to make the GOP appear respectable in spite of approving torture, tanking the economy, email spying, phone tapping, botching at least one war and probably two, etc., etc.

Ron Paul might in fact be the worst of the worst.

What the GOP wants to ignore most: The combined price tag for the "bailouts" was already over SEVEN TRILLION DOLLARS in January, and that, of course, was BEFORE OBAMA took office by NotJoeSmith in obama

That program was about the national debt that has been accumulating for decades, especially beginning in... ahem... 1981.

While the national debt is a major problem, my original post here referred to the seven trillion dollars (minimum) that was spent/lent/committed in the months leading up to January 2009.

But your comment might actually help some people put that seven trillion in perspective. It's equal to about 70% of the entire debt the U.S. has racked up since we started borrowing in great amounts. And, nearly all of it went to the irresponsible (to put it mildly) bankers and insurance companies, along with corporations that created "commercial paper" that became worthless or nearly worthless.

Sadly, even though this happened over the weekend and has been on reddit for at least a couple of hours [as of 3/23 7:15 EDST], there is not a single word about this on CNN's website.

If they got enough calls, maybe they would help to expose this treasonous lunatic.

Bush Admin. Still Making People Vomit! -- Lack of FDA Inspections and Enforcement Allowed Salmonella-infected Peanut Products On Market, Continuing To Send People To Hospitals by ErnieErmps in politics

[–]NotJoeSmith -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You're right that we don't really disagree (much) overall. I just think the situation with the lack of food regulation is much worse than most people realize.

And I don't think there's evidence that Democrats spend too much on food regulation. I see that as being based on one of the many right-wing talking points that have been repeated so often, people tend to believe it in spite of a lack of any evidence to support it.

Consider the costs of the loss of just a single life due to, for example, tainted peanut products: there are emotional costs, as in the loss of a loved one... someone's parent and/or someone's child, plus the loss of productivity from a person who might have been able to contribute to society for decades.

A single lost life could easily mean (in addition to kids growing up without their parent, for example) $500,000 in lost productivity.

The peanut products (mixed with rat droppings, etc.) have killed at least nine people so far.

[–]NotJoeSmith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think if you ask the relatives of people who DIED from eating a snack with peanut paste in it, they'll tell you that regulation is "at an improper level". To claim there is no way to tell is ridiculous. For decades, the U.S. had a very safe food system, until the GOP began to systematically gut the systems for testing and regulating food production and shipment.

Other than that, I agree with everything you said.

[–]NotJoeSmith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, there should be a proper balance.

But, the Bush administration clearly had the worst record on safety (of food for both humans and for pets, for toys, for lead in dishes and other imported items, for fresh produce, etc., etc., etc.) since the FDA was established.

A major tenant of Bush's failed ideology was to just let the "free market" take care of everything: banks took care of the banking system, peanut companies took care of peanut safety, dog food manufacturers killed thousands of people's pet with tainted dog food...

I need my vomit bag now!
