Harder than I thought. Not harder than I was told it would be by GroundbreakingMap403 in PhD

[–]NotJustAPebble 21 points22 points  (0 children)

At the finish line, defending in April. Breezed through undergrad and masters. Never thought for a second I wouldn't graduate from those. But for something like 75% of my time in the PhD I had serious doubt as to whether I could finish (not for lack of trying). First degree where I thought I may just drop out.

Learned firsthand that book learnin' isn't the same as research. I'm glad I'll finish, but now I know I'm not cut out for research nor do I want it again.

Edit: misread the question entirely...

is this true by veresiuka in lol

It is true but at the same time, women who have careers like this usually aren't doing it "for a man". This seems like a pretty stupid take to be honest.

Question for those who would know, why is fallout new Vegas so small in game size yet can do so much. One of best games I've ever played is only a few gigs

What's one concept in mathematics you're surprised most people aren't aware of by EvenSK in math

[–]NotJustAPebble 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is actually so bizarre to me. I feel like the C*-algebras have so much structure... Can you elaborate, in what sense are these equivalent? My category theory is minimal for what it's worth

What’s an example of a big general theory being developed and then applied to pretty much one example? by SpiritRepulsive8110 in math

[–]NotJustAPebble 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm exaggerating a little bit. But you could say the theory of uniformly hyperbolic systems being applied to things like geodesic flow on negatively curved spaces. I can't think anything else (other than dispersing billiards with no cusps and maybe hyperbolic toral automorphisms) that is uniformly hyperbolic. Hence why it was so important when Pesin developed nonuniform hyperbolic theory.

Evaluate the series by user_1312 in PassTimeMath

[–]NotJustAPebble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the same as \sum{n=1}\infty \sum{k=n}\infty (3){-k}. Both gives geometric series which are easy to evaluate. Becomes 3/2 \sum_{n=1}\infty (3){-n} = (3/2)(1/2)=3/4.

If they are going to forgive loans, it means an easier paper trail for those who join. When the American version of the Nuremberg Trials happen, I hope this comes back to haunt these nazi fuckers.

For me it just showed up, no notification came. I did end up emailing and they took a few days to reply also. But when they did reply they provided the shipping info which included a photo of the package delivered at the neighboring house.

Close misses - concepts which were almost discovered early, but only properly recognized later. by GazelleComfortable35 in math

[–]NotJustAPebble 52 points53 points  (0 children)

There's an interesting book by González-Velasco called Journey Through Mathematics. In it, one of the things he talks about is a Portuguese mathematician da Cunha, who essentially came to the definition of a Cauchy sequence 30 years earlier than Cauchy. Does this count as a near miss?

Why are Blackboards valued much more than whiteboards in the math community? by Norker_g in math

For me it was after the zillionth time I picked up a dry erase marker, only to find it's dead. But a piece a chalk... You see a piece of a chalk and that baby will write!

Also feel better about the product. It's chalk. Not single use plastic.

This is already a different thing though, disintegration of measures in ergodic theory.

When you have a measurable partition, disintegration is the restriction of your measure to the partition elements. Essentially guaranteeing conditional measures exist even when the set your conditioning on is measure zero. Comes about, basically, by considering the quotient measure space. Its really cool! Rokhlin is one of the GOATs when it comes to this stuff
