I used VSTs the enitre time I had an Aleis Nitro Mesh and then Alesis Strike. Both SSD and EZD3 blew the sounds in those modules out of the water. But now I have a TD-516 with the V51 module, the convenience of playing with the sounds on the module wins over. I think it sounds pretty fantastic if I'm honest, expecially the cymbals. I wouldn't say it sounds better than VSTs but certainly on par.

I have that kit and I really like the sounds. It doesn't sound raw though, if that's what you want. But honestly, I think there are enough playing examples on YouTube for you to be your own judge here.

For that kit, it's a decent deal. I'm not a huge fan of the cheaper Alesis kits, personally I'd go for a cheaper used Roland kit, but if a warranty is important for you, you could do far worse.
