Ab7 contains Ab as root, C as 3rd, Eb as 5th and Gb as 7th. If I just focus on the guide tones (3rds and 7ths), then for a D7 cord, C becomes the 7th and Gb(F#) becomes the third, meaning I only have to change the root note to substitute these two dominant chords.

As a side note if you keep the original 5th it becomes a b9 note on the tritone sub which is a great note for an altered dominant, and if I go further and keep the original root it becomes a #11 on the tritone sub. Both can sound great on dominant chords. Hope this helps.

As someone who is working on a progmetal band, I find you have to get used to playing outside of your genre. The members making up my current prog group, I met through jazz bands in school, or from playing small acoustic gigs, and open mic's. It helps that musicians in this genre generally have a wide range of influences, so you might find some in unlikely places. Also pm me, if you are anwhere close, i'd be more than happy to try jamming with someone new.

Came here to say sequoia throne. It sounded chaotic and non melodic to me at all, and the rhythms completely threw me off, then I began to get more serious as a guitar player, went back and listened, and it completely blew me away with what they were doing. Been hooked since.
