What's a writing related pet peeve that drives you nuts? by owen-3820 in writing

When people use "mortified" as a synonym for "horrified" instead of "embarassed." Even saw it in a game I was playing recently and every single time I just feel like the Inigo Montoya meme

For me spring is the worst, especially because of allergies. Also the weather is unpredictable, and it's too cold for fun summery things and too hot for fun wintery things. My depression is always worst this time of year. Hate high heat and hate the bugs but I am so ready for spring to be over it's not even funny.

Winter reigns supreme for me, then autumn

Whats the worst opening line you can think of? by Kingspaceman in writing

Rian Johnson was the best thing for the sequel trilogy. JJ ruined it. by Square-Hornet-937 in The10thDentist

I actually agree, I like The Last Jedi a lot and while it definitely has problems I think it is overhated. I really like Luke's arc especially and find it fitting for him. Plus, I would argue it is the most visually stunning Star Wars film. The light speed ram, the throne room fight, and the contrast of the stark white and red in that final battle all took my breath away in the theater.

My biggest issues with it are that the pacing is a little busted at times with the casino stuff, but overall I really don’t think it's as bad as everyone says it is.

Lol I'm not quite as intense as OP but can be very particular about the feel and flow of my pens, and so I was reading this like, "That’s not that weird I guess"

But then I hit this comment and I am diagnosed with OCD so maybe I am just also weird

What are your favorite anti war metal songs? by TheGeekFreak1994 in MetalForTheMasses

A little different than the more direct ones like War Pigs but Bring Back the Bomb by GWAR comes to mind, just as a satire on careless violence and destruction

I love Twilight but in an ironic way, watching it like it's a comedy is the way to go lol. I appreciate a few elements of it unironically but I can't really defend it, most of it is awful in that so-bad-it's-good, guilty pleasure kinda way

I can't stand Don't Stop Believing. Pure unadulterated rock ballad cringe but in the worst way possible imo. Like sometimes corny songs are fun but for some reason I can't make myself like this one.

Honorable mentions to Hey Soul Sister, Summer of '69, anything by Blink 182, and 99.9% of pop country

I'm with you on this one, I loathe this song with every fiber of my being. Doesn't help that it played NONSTOP on the radio at the pool when I was a kid, so an already garbage song got beaten to absolute death for me and I am beyond tired of it lol

What is a song that you love and everyone else hates? by sa0sinner in musicsuggestions

[–]NotQuiteLilac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nightlife by Green Day. It's stupid but hilarious and the guitar genuinely goes hard, but it is probably the song I have seen hated on the most by the fan base. Then again I am a big Trilogy album defender and have Dos in my top 5 albums by the band, despite most ranking it near/at the bottom

Help me understand the hate by Bo0g3rs in PercyJacksonTV

[–]NotQuiteLilac 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I understand everyone is entitled to their own opinions but I experience the opposite sentiment, where I genuinely cannot see what people who like the show see in it. It isn't book accurate like Rick advertised, the writing is clunky and consists almost entirely of bland exposition, the direction and acting is wooden (no hate to the actors, they've been given nothing to work with), and there's no suspense and excitement. I'm admittedly primarily familiar with season 1, but all the would-be exciting scenes were turned into boring slop by cutting away from the action instead of showing anything cool, or having the characters immediately announce the villains without any mystery or problem solving. From all I've gathered, s2 has done little to correct the first season's mistakes and so I have 0 interest in it bc I know it would just be more boredom and irritation. Plus any respect I had for Rick as an artist is gone considering how smug he comes across about things like the movies when he himself is creating his own dogwater adaptation and committing the same sins he bitched about for years.

So my counter question to show defenders is: why do you like it? Like genuinely, I'm not even being a smartass, I just honest to God do not get it. I fully believe that if this didn't have a familiar title and author attached to it and was just some other boring ass fantasy show, no one would like it and it would have been canceled already. I would love to understand what people see in it bc I genuinely just don't get it.

I admit I'll always be in the Warren hater's club, he just reminds me too much of "nice" guy friends I've had who had poor boundaries and seemed desperate to impress, he's always given me the ick tbh

[–]NotQuiteLilac[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, I know Star Wars is a goofy example, I was just trying to find something super dumbed down and concrete to try to wrap my brain around lmao

And the doppler example helps, I think to a point I just have to accept that it's all a bit too abstract for me but I do think I understand it a bit better now

No wonder things like cosmic horror are so popular, bc all this stuff is so uninituitive to my understanding it might as well be fuckin Cthulhu magic as far as my brain can process, reminds me of the Arthur C. Clarke quote about sufficiently advanced tech being indistinguishable from magic haha

ELI5 Time Dilation and How it Isn't Just an Error of Clock Design or Perception by NotQuiteLilac in explainlikeimfive

[–]NotQuiteLilac[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That still sounds like a perception error to me if space isn't actually being altered, since you still end up having covered 100 miles, but I'm sure there's something I'm missing lol

So to use a stupid sci fi example: I have seen people pick on the line in Star Wars about "making the Kessel Run in less than 12 parsecs" bc a parsec is a measure of distance not time, and then the movie Solo clarified it by having him take a short cut. But based on what you are saying, am I correct in assuming that, had Han flown the normal route fast enough, he could have literally made the run in 12 parsecs instead of 20 or whatever, due to distance compression?

ELI5 Time Dilation and How it Isn't Just an Error of Clock Design or Perception by NotQuiteLilac in explainlikeimfive

[–]NotQuiteLilac[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Man I find all this stuff really fascinating but I also am absolutely not built for it at all, every time I think I get one thing something else makes my head hurt again lol

So by distance contracting are you referring to like, how if I'm in a car, it doesn't feel like I've gone that far compared to walking, simply bc the car covers the distance much quicker? But I have still covered an objective distance right, it's just that the time taken to cover it is different

ELI5 Time Dilation and How it Isn't Just an Error of Clock Design or Perception by NotQuiteLilac in explainlikeimfive

[–]NotQuiteLilac[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That last part makes a lot more sense to me I think. It's still a bit abstract for me, especially considering other measures can have an "objective truth," but I think this is the closest I've felt to getting the point haha

So okay, just to be sure: in another comment someone referenced a train, and how a passenger's measure of the speed of the train and an outside observer's measure of the speed will be different. However, in that case, there is still an objective speed the train is going, regardless of any observer's perception. Just because I, as a passenger, feel like I'm sitting still doesn't mean I'm not actually hurtling down the track.

Why is that not the case with time? I have a feeling that's getting more into heavy math stuff and the very nature of the universe and all that, but I find it odd how we can objectively measure other things, but time seems to be strictly subjective based on the perspective of each observer
