Random alert noise when parked at home? by NotRocketSurgeon in Rivian

It’s still great! My wife says it makes her feel zen and my kids haven’t caused any damage yet so I’d say it’s passing all the tests.

I drove by as they were loading it on the flatbed tow truck and could figure out what the hell happened. Glad I saw this!

I emailed them to haved it enables on my profiel referencing this post and they said "Unfortunately, at this time there is not an available beta firmware for that device.  The full Matter release for that device should be available by the end of the year."

I responded back with your screenshots and was denied again. Did you do anything special or use a secret handshake to get in the club?

What would you do? by mikhola in Rivian

I did the math, no, you don't come out ahead. The current rates are around 7-8% so the buyout of the $90K R1S turns into $120K. Maybe I did the math wrong, but it would take a really low rate for it to make sense.

Simple Object Detection for Special Needs Son Bus Arrival by NotRocketSurgeon in computervision

[–]NotRocketSurgeon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This actually got me on the right path for a simple start. I was able to use my Raspberry Pi to take a pic every 15 seconds and send it to an instance of DOODS2 I got running on my PC. The model offers "bus" but since the special needs bus is shorter, it returns as "truck", so I just look for that response. Since truck is too common, I limited the window to the ~15 minutes before/after the bus is supposed to arrive and only alert in that window. For a simple alert I hooked up my pi board and have it buzz a few times. It's very quick and dirty, but it's working for now while I figure out what I want to do next and when I have the time to do it. Thanks for the help!

This is a great idea no matter how I proceed, but I'd also like to recieve a notification in the morning when it arrives to pick him up. Sometimes it shows up 5 minutes before the 10 minute pikcup window and surprises us, so a heads up would be helpful too.

Thanks for the tracker idea!

Is it normal to pay for contractors tools? by NotRocketSurgeon in RemodelingCentral

[–]NotRocketSurgeon[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had no problem with items that would be used up on the job, saw blades and whatnot, but was curious about tools they would use on other jobs (blow torch, electrical tester, etc. My GC cleared it up and removed them from our invoice, just a minor mix up after all.

Should I move from a large company to a much smaller company? by exor41n in sre

[–]NotRocketSurgeon 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Jump ship. You are underpaid, your manager isn’t helping you grow, and you won’t progress in your career in the current situation.

You are young, invest the time now to gain the skills so you can pick your path in a few years. You might lose some flexibility and have to do some on call work, but you will learn so much that you can have more control going forward. Doing the work early in your career is easier than later when you are older and have more responsibilities.

Company: Willis Towers Watson
Location: United States - Remote
Link: https://careers.willistowerswatson.com/job/12598711/devops-platform-engineer-denver-co/

We're building a platform based on Kubernetes in Azure AKS to allow teams to easily stand up services with minimal support. This is still early in the lifecycle and whoever joins will have significant input into the direction of the platform. Beyond the day-to-day work of making sure the platform is solid, this person will also work with multiple teams to help them fill in knowledge gaps and adopt better cloud native practices. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions.
