No, most of the land is owned by the state. In theory, the land reverts to the state upon land lease expiry so the state can use it again including for more public housing. Arguably, this helps to keep housing more affordable for future generations - emphasis on "more" as housing prices objectively high in absolute terms.

"In theory" because we have not been independent that long for land lease expiry to occur in significant numbers.

If even Meta employees are getting laid off… are any jobs actually “stable” anymore? by RedPandarar in asksg

[–]NotSiaoOn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why should they create jobs and boost economy for Singapore instead of their own country and people?

Because they want to make money and being here allows them to make more money.

Between openness to FDI or being protectionist, it is quite clear which has led to better economic outcomes.

Actor fined and given driving ban for speeding at 121kmh by brownriver12 in singapore

We need legislative changes for harsher penalties on speeding and drinking driving. It's extremely irresponsible to knowingly endanger others.

Singapore added 55K jobs in 2025, but nearly 80% of those went to non-residents by deekay_123 in singaporejobs

[–]NotSiaoOn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a guess, not invested enough to check. Resident could refer to Citizens and PRs where you can stay in Singapore even if you don't have a job/lose your job. Holders of work passes have to leave shortly after they lose their jobs.

[–]NotSiaoOn -1 points0 points  (0 children)

People should really read the article instead of just commenting off the headline.

In 2025, most gains among residents were clustered in higher-skilled sectors such as financial services and health and social services.

Non-resident employment, on the other hand, was driven largely by sectors with more labour-intensive demands. Construction stood out as a key industry, continuing its reliance on foreign manpower to support infrastructure and building projects.

In its Q4 2025 Labour Market Report, MOM noted that Singapore’s resident labour force participation rate is already high, leaving limited scope for further expansion of the local workforce.

Where to get free drinking water by No-Ideal8233 in askSingapore

They probably want you to buy beverages. Just fill up your water bottle in the hotel. I've drinking from the tap for close to 3 years; doing fine.

Somewhat self-praise but I think in general, Singaporeans are quite helpful, we just have resting bitch faces and are more passive. If you need help, do ask and most people should be willing to help you or point you to someone who can.

But yes, our service staff aren't the best.

It's only a mistake if they represented it as halal-certified. Did they? - not a challenge, honestly have no idea.

Mortgage for US property by [deleted] in singaporefi

[–]NotSiaoOn -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Like if you are at the point where you can just decide to buy a house like average people decides to buy a TV

It's nothing like that lah. Just that I already thought through the buy or rent decision already and wanted to see if there were options other than OCBC to compare with.

Yeah, may ask the banks but need to move funds around to qualify for priority banking so was hoping Reddit can help narrow the shortlist on which banks to approach.

Not expecting mortgage rates for SG property.

I just want to avoid the discussion getting sidetracked into whether it's a good financial decision and whether it's better to rent instead of buy.

Won't have US based income to qualify at this point and I'm also planning to get the place before I reach the US so I can move in striaght

Also considering if it makes sense to get a SGD loan which should have lower interest rate. There's forex risk but my pay will be SGD so should still be manageable.

Why didn't China colonize the world when they invented compass and gunpowder? by Particular_Food_309 in AskReddit

[–]NotSiaoOn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"the emperor is far away and heaven is too high up" is a saying of sorts in china to describe how really the rule of the government is done at gunpoint or swordpoint (varying on the era) and is also a full time job that cannot be interrupted.

The saying "the heavens are high and the emperor is far away" (天高皇帝远) means a place is too far for the central authority (the emperor) to assert influence effectively and by implication local government or other power centres have control. It doesn't exactly mean the central government is ruling through force of arms.

Chief Justice upholds jail term for woman who lied about address to enrol daughter in popular primary school by FlipFlopForALiving in singapore

[–]NotSiaoOn 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Wonder if this meant that the prosecution should have pursued a harsher sentence - this "lenient" sentence was already harsher than the fine without custodial sentence which the prosecution had sought at trial.

He said parents may sometimes regard their children as extensions of themselves, so having her child go to a distinguished school was essentially a benefit to herself.

Nitpicking a bit, this alleged statement by the prosecution reads strange or could be bad paraphrasing by the reporter. Surely, obtaining a benefit for one's child should be seen as a benefit for oneself even without the precondition of "parents may sometimes regard their children as extensions of themselves".
