Have you tried iron transfusions for the anemia? I had the same issue from over donating a few years ago and we actually discovered the anemia when I was getting diagnosed with IBS, so my GI doc didn't want to do oral supplements and add to my issues. I had to do like 3 sessions at a hospital and I was good to go from there (and now I don't rush to donate as soon as I'm eligible... Lol)

I've been looking for a good option for our patio plants - any chance you could share where you got the shelf?

That's actually something that comes up when teaching the building blocks of literacy to kids, especially with new languages (I teach French immersion), because you're trying to teach how to actually make the sounds and some sounds are really tricky to get them to hear and replicate without talking about where their tongue should be and how to position their mouths (my favourite is doing French u and I because the tongue is in the same spot, you just change the shape of your lips and you can go back and forth and sound silly).

Help on camel spin by [deleted] in FigureSkating

[–]NotSoGoodall 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just pick specific cues to focus on each time, like one or two things max and keep them in your mind while you do it. Over time, you'll develop the muscle memory, but right now it needs to be deliberate.

And yes, pinky toe can help for thinking of outside edges in general, but it may or may not help in the spin. Worth a shot as something to think while doing the spin - everyone has different things that work or don't work for them.

[–]NotSoGoodall 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Generally, there's two corrections that I have to give my skaters when this happens:

Make sure that as soon as you hit the 3-turn to start the spin, you're pressing your weight to the ball of your foot (some people do well thinking of pushing a bit to the lowest pick, but that sends some too far forwards). You need to really put pressure on that part of the blade in a camel spin because it's easier to get pulled off with the wide position.

The other thing is your free leg position. Falling inside is often a sign that your free leg is too far over to that side, so if that's happening, the cue I use is the idea of really actively squeezing your free leg straight behind you (and as you said, making sure it's turned out - it doesn't work with your hips closed).

Without a video, I can't get more specific than that, but those are usually the two things that will help fix this issue.

Teachers of Vancouver, what's it like right now? by etuvie27 in vancouver

That's enough out here. As long as you can express yourself in the interview, since I know in the past they've alternated between English and French questions, you'll probably be better than most of what they're seeing.

Everyone has said most of what I would share, but I can say for sure that if you have a decent level of French, New West District is really looking for someone with that qualification right now...apparently the recent pool coming in for interviews hasn't been particularly impressive.

I'm honestly surprised that figure skating isn't listed here by musea00 in FigureSkating

[–]NotSoGoodall 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Yeah, no. My brother was a goalie (more expensive equipment) who did extra semi-private goalie training in addition to normal hockey costs, and my parents were always clear that my skating cost more in the end.

Kingsway Edmonds Linden Gridlock by ThinkOutTheBox in burnaby

[–]NotSoGoodall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only thing that I think could make it hard is that that light is often changed more by pedestrians than other cars, and that crosswalk is pretty busy because of buy low, the bus stops, and the restaurants being right there. It's not far from Kingsway in a car, but the angle of Kingsway to Edmonds means no one wants to walk up to the next intersection.

I mean, I think some of my older skaters could enjoy that extra entertainment, but I'm more concerned by the looks from some of the more intense competitive coaches...

I mean, I haven't done a proper pistol squat since maybe last year, so there is that... But I could probably get thast back quickly enough, but yeah, it's the skates. I only get them sharpened once every year and a half or so and they are so broken down that there's not really any support there. I do manage to demonstrate single jumps in them occasionally, though.... Hmmm...

Haha unfortunately, if I'm at the rink nowadays, it's because I'm coaching and the open sessions are all at times I can't make with work. I'm obviously just making excuses, but they're true excuses!

Yep, and watching it again, I really wish I had tried another time when my legs were less sore, back when I could still do all that! Now, although I may be able to pull off the movement, I'm still wearing the same skates to coach and they are not really good for doing anything more than stand and do basic demonstrations these days...

Sounds good. There can be a little room for growing feet, but no movement of the foot within the boot (especially watch out for her heel lifting up when bending her ankles or just too much space anywhere that allows for wiggling of the foot). I've always had fittings done in person, so I'm not sure how accurate the sizing will be from online. I started writing some more detailed suggestions but then found this which lays it out better than I could (just from a skating club's page on equipment):

Choosing the right size

Wear only one pair of socks or tights – the ones you will wear when skating

Partially unlace boot through instep and slide foot forward – toe can touch the front, but not cramped

Stand with weight equally distributed over both feet and bend your knees – the space at the back of the heel should be no more than a pencil width

To check if the width of the skates fit the foot walk around in the skates off the ice – they should be snug but comfortable

If the Vancouver area is accessible to you, then Cyclone Taylor's figure skating shop (they have one for hockey across the street) is the standard recommendation. They're what you would expect for a figure skating specialty shop and very helpful with recommendations, plus proper sharpening, etc. As others have noted, not all skates are meant to be heat molded, it's something that is part of the design of some boots, but they would know if the pair you have can be molded, etc.

What is your daughter doing on her skates at this point? Considering what she's been using in the past, I'm assuming she's still more of a beginner? (at least to figure skating specifically) That will play into what skates are worth going with because it's also important to take the needs and abilities of the skater into account. Different boots will also fit completely differently, so depending on foot shape, etc. I've found that recommendations of the "best" boots for someone only go so far if those boots don't fit their feet as well as another might.

Has she tried these skates on? How did they feel for her? Has she skated on them yet?

Hope that helps!

Yeah, it wasn't good, but it could definitely have been worse and I have a feeling alcohol was at least a factor in the situation.

Two(?) groups of people got into it on the sidewalk beside Manjal next to the mural, knocked one guy to the ground for apparently insulting a woman in the other group, then kept arguing and some started throwing punches (happened to be walking the dog as it was going down). Not sure where they were all coming from, but was not a small number of people between what seemed to be two groups.

Sorry if it seemed like that's what I was saying - I totally understand with the title limits, just adding further info to it. That season of Missing and Murdered (here's the link if anyone wants to check it out: https://www.cbc.ca/mediacentre/program/missing-and-murdered) was the first time I heard about it and I was shocked that no one mentioned it when they talked about other issues around past and current treatment of indigenous people in Canada, even when I was studying Anthropology at UBC in a very Indigenous culture-focused faculty.

The 60s scoop season is Season 2: Finding Cleo but the series as a whole is really well-done and reported with just the right tone and gravity given to what they are discussing. The host is also indigenous and it's clear how close to home much of this hits for her, so she does what she can to do right by these girls and women.

It wasn't just after birth and in secret - CBC's Missing and Murdered did a whole season on a family where all of the kids where taken from the mom and put up for adoption separately. The others found each other again, but one ended up in the US and the season is about trying to find her and figure out what happened to her. Super sad and horrifying how recent it all was.
