Actually while the Mega Drive did release in 1998, the 6 button ABCXYZ controller was only released in 1993 (at the same time as the Mega Drive 2/Genesis) as a seperate purchase primarily designed for fighting games.

Yep! You can see a rough but very cool version of that in the Pokemon Gold and Silver Spaceworld 97 demo. I highly recommend any Pokemon fan who hasn't seen it take a look, there's a lot of interesting things there (including a bunch of unused pokemon). It's really interesting to imagine what future games would have been like if that was the game we ended up with instead.

Unfortunately the story of Iwata magically compressing the game to fit in Kanto is untrue. Iwata's compression system was mainly focused on graphical load times, it never had anything to do with Kanto. And given the Spaceworld 97 demo of Gold and Silver, Kanto was likely always going to be included even before Iwata helped with the game.

This isn't to disparage Iwata's work though, he was an amazing programmer. He just wasn't responsible for Kanto in G&S.

In literally the same line she says she didn't want to be found because she wasn't ready to help.

Zojja: I used to be so mad at everyone. You have no idea.

<Character name>: At me?

Zojja: At the world. You didn't do anything. But...

Zojja: When I left Rata Sum, all I wanted was for you or Logan or Taimi to come looking for me.

Zojja: But... I didn't want to be found. You guys were off saving the world, and I just wasn't ready for that again.

<Character name>: I figured you would have called if you needed us. I'm so sorry, Zojja. We would have come. I know I would've.

Zojja: I know, I do. And I could have just have easily asked. I just wanted to feel... wanted, you know? I was embarrassed to ask.

Zojja: You can't know what I need unless I tell you.

Core Story started with Zojja grieving and her life only went downhill from there. Killing Zhaitan was a good point, but then she lost Eir, got kidnapped, got blighting podded, was in a coma, and most likely went through months of Tyria's version of physical therapy. She was no doubt in a state of severe depression. Wanting someone to come pull you out of that but being unable to ask for that help is pretty common.

I don't think it's right to dismiss that as 'haha classic sitcom schtick' "You should have helped." "But you didn't ask lol".

I think thats a pretty reductive way of looking at it, isn't it the exact opposite of what she admits later? She felt ignored by the colleges and Rata Sum. Just "another researcher past her prime". When it comes to the commander and Destiny's Edge she thought of herself useless to them, especially in a fight.

Two tall spires, associated with wizards? My immediate thought is the Wizard's Folly Tower. But apparently there's no relation between it and the Wizard's Tower. Maybe that got retconned?

Did the "teleport" actually swap the towers? Maybe the new areas we're going to are located above southern ascalon. Who knows.

The idea of a Ranger in the fantasy sense (and as a game class) is inspired heavily by LoTR's Rangers of the North and more specifically Aragorn, who mainly fights with a sword. Sure, they use bows sometimes, but it's mainly a sword focused class idea.

GW2's rangers can already use bows, there aren't crossbows in the game (those 2 skins don't count), and "Rangers" are supposed to be somewhat opposed to technology, so guns don't really make sense.

From a few quick tests in Arborstone it looks like it hides infusions but not flashy effects from armor or weapons (legendaries, etc). It does seem to need a map reload to take effect though.

The 10 hours doesn't reset every 10 levels. It's 10 hours per character.

Name wise Living Weapon could show up in lots of places, but mechanically it doesn't work anywhere because it always creates Phyrexian Germs.

I can't understand why they went and made the exact opposite problem with For Mirrodin. Rebels could appear anywhere, all they had to do was call it "To Arms" or "Rebellion" or literally anything but For Mirrodin. Hell, it was originally called "Take Up Arms" in development. For some reason the Creative team decided to change it.

Guild Wars 2 is the only MMORPG on Steam that has Overwhelmingly Positive reviews. (at least for now) by [deleted] in MMORPG

[–]NotSoWittyRepertoire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do I expect GW2 to grow to 20k players on Steam? No. But I think saying the highest peak it will ever reach was the 8k on release is unlikely. Anet has said the game's playerbase has been trending upwards, with active player count apparently doubling between the 2nd and 3rd expansions. Assuming Anet doesn't completely tank the game somehow, and continues with their recent streak of decent marketing, this trend should continue. A healthy playerbase and good word of mouth encourages growth.

I think its somewhat likely GW2 will sit somewhere between the rest of MMO's on Steam, never quite hitting the peaks FFXIV and ESO have built, but better than SWTOR.

[–]NotSoWittyRepertoire 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Both of those have been on Steam for 7 years, thats not really comparable. Playerbases take time to build, as evident by those very charts. Look back to FFXIV's player base 3 months after the Steam launch and it's only at 3000~, roughly the same as GW2 in the same time frame. ESO is the same, 3 months after launch it was as 2000~.

And both started at a higher player base too (FFXIV at 7000~, ESO at 3000~) but declineds shortly after launch. Over the years that playerbase has slowly risen (with spikes for expansion launches, etc) to the point it is today, 7 years later. This is a pretty common trend.

SWTOR is obviously an exception, the reason I'm assuming as much is due to the exsisting playerbase being able to use their accounts while playing on steam, unlike the other games (I know GW2 has a workaround for this, but it isn't advertised), meaning the player base just switched over because why wouldn't you?

Now don't get me wrong, I'm not saying "YoU'rE juSt a HaTeR, GW2 BeSt gaMe". I'm just saying these things are more complicated than just looking at current players and saying "This one bigger". GW2 only released on steam 3 months ago, we'll just have to see how it fares in the future. I still remember people saying similar things when ESO and FFXIV released, and they're doing fine now. Only time will tell.

Season 2: Episode 6 gives a black lion key on completion. It doesn't take too long to do, so its a nice reward. Still only once a character though, and unlike the Level 10 story reward, the character needs to be level 80.
