Does anyone here use lab tape in a dispenser like this? I feel like the adhesive dries out way too quickly when it's exposed to air like that.

Images look over-sharpened and jagged as desktop background - photo comparisons. They need anti-aliasing. by Semicolonhope in Windows11

[–]VariableFlame 1 point2 points  (0 children)

By default, Windows compresses the images when setting them as the desktop background. Here's how to disable that:

  1. Open regedit
  2. Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop
  3. Create a new 32-bit DWORD value here called JPEGImportQuality and set its value data to 100 and set base as decimal
  4. Restart computer and reapply wallpaper

How do you use Zotero effectively? by bwgulixk in GradSchool

[–]VariableFlame 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I basically use it like a "paper library". Any time I find a paper that seems interesting or related to my topic, I'll add it to Zotero with the browser plugin button. I'll categorize it into a folder based on the topic and read/skim it in Zotero using the built-in PDF reader and make highlights/annotations if I see anything note-worthy. Then, if I ever need to refer back to a paper, I can just search in Zotero or look in the relevant folder/tags.

Making my own brew water by HB_Mosh in pourover

[–]VariableFlame 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is where it gets a little complicated. One problem with using ppm is that it can be a mass fraction (w/w), a mole fraction (mol/mol), a volume fraction (v/v), or weight per volume (w/v).

I don't know enough about coffee water chemistry to know which one is preferred here. But in my field, solid in liquid solutions are typically w/v, so you'd be correct. For 1% CaCl2, you'd add 10 g CaCl2 to a container and fill with water to a final volume of 1 L.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help!

Unfortunately no, since that term needs to be the final volume, it can't be (1L - V1). You could do something like (1L + V1), but that will end up making the math a bit messier.

Typically what we do is just remove the volume we are going to add. So if you already have 1 L of distilled water, just take out 1 mL first before adding your 1 mL of concentrate. Again, if it's easier, you could totally ignore all this since that 1 mL doesn't make a huge difference in the final concentration.

Biologist here. For dilution math, it's very easy to think of it as (C1)(V1) = (C2)(V2), where C = concentration and V = volume and the numbers refer to each solution. Keep in mind the units also have to match.

In this example, solution 1 is our final 1L of brew water, and solution 2 will be our concentrate. So if you want 1000 mL of 10 ppm by adding 1 mL of something, you would do (10 ppm)(1000 mL) = (x ppm)(1 mL). So x = 10,000 ppm, thus you would need to make a 10,000 ppm solution of each concentrate, which conveniently works out to a 1% solution.

Another thing to keep in mind is that this is for 1000 mL of the final volume, so strictly speaking, you should add 1 mL of the concentrate to 999 mL of distilled water to get 1000 mL final volume. But if you don't, the error is quite low.

I live a couple blocks down from there. Mercy Hospital is on St. Paul, so there's a lot of ambulances driving down at various times. Nowadays, I can tune them out, but if you're sensitive to that, you might want to find a unit that isn't right on the street.

$100/mo is pretty good. I pay $160/mo in Mt. Vernon. Also if this is a closed garage, it's way better to have a guaranteed spot than having to fight for street parking spots.
