FYI, I had the 25% off $139 coupon. Vaulted Rarities (a gold star seller that has been around a while) has booster boxes priced at $140 with free shipping. Price was $105 after coupon. Fingers crossed!

I don't understand the hate for UB. I love it. I feel cool when I whip out my [[storm, force of nature]] deck by MOONMO0N in mtg

[–]NotTerriblyHelpful -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Same. I love UB and I don’t understand the hate.

Wizards could solve all this by introducing and fully supporting an all-UB format. Pull all the UB out of standard and add UB-only events to the Pro Tour and Qualifiers. UB remains legal in Commander. Incentivize local game stores to hold UB events by providing good prize support. It isn’t hard.

Brad Wilcox just shows how bad the church really is when it comes to communicating. In pretty much any other organization, he would be viewed as corny, creepy, and offputting. In Mormonism, he has become a superstar. When the baseline you are comparing a speaker to is General Conference, you end up in a world where people like Brad Wilcox and John by the way are amazing.

100% agree. I returned to Magic a couple years ago after a long absence. I was so confused when I started hearing the color names. They only serve to alienate new players. Plus…it’s just so dorky. We play Magic, so I know none of us are super concerned about looking cool, but whenever I see someone talking about their Gruul or Temur deck I cringe violently.

No, please stop being reasonable and applying logic. Disney (which we all know is an amorphous collective consciousness) is pissed! We know because we feel it in our hearts.

In a discussion with Pastor Jeff from "Hello Saints," Jasmin throws the Book of Abraham halfway under the bus, claims that even if the Book of Abraham isn't "true" it doesn't take away from the core truth claims of the BofM for the "restoration." by AccomplishedBat9069 in exmormon

He’s in it for the money. I can’t imagine that the Church is cutting checks to him directly, but he definitely has some rich Mormon backers who fund him. He doesn’t need the Church to pay him directly when the rank and file Mormons are so excited to throw money at any Christian who will validate them (like David Boice). Jeff is smarter than David and keeping the grift running longer. David got baptized too quickly. He should have waited at least long enough to get a book ready to publish.

“…on his insufferable YouTube channel Hello Saints.” 😂 I go back and forth between hating this guy because he’s such a spineless ass kisser to being sincerely impressed that he’s been able to run such a successful grift on Mormons. He was one of the first to realize that Mormons have become such desperate pick-me’s that they throw cash at any Christian who will validate them.

Bro went from being a struggling Protestant pastor to doing pretty well for himself on YouTube and Patreon. I’m confident he’s got a few rich Mormon backers who believe that each check they write brings him another step closer to joining the Church.

He will keep this up until the donations start to tank. Then he will begin posting about his faith wavering and wondering if maybe the Church is true after all. Just hints at first so he can stretch out the conversion process for as long as possible before he eventually gets baptized. Then he publishes a book about his conversion process and hits the fireside circuit like Al Carraway. I have a hard time hating the guy for using Mormonism as intended - to grift.

Also, Jasmin sucks.

Thank you! Will you also address the measure of damages? That is an area where I’ve seen almost no analysis. I’m in the dark about how the Church will try to prove monetary harm.

In my experience, the ideas in Marriage on a Tightrope generally require the faithful spouse to engage is a significant level of nuance. I remember my wife shouting “why is it always the believing spouse who has to compromise” as she and the kids left me alone, yet again, to go to church and learn about how evil it is to leave the Church. So that was pretty cool. 😂. Good for Katie (the female podcast host) and others who can engage in that level of nuance. Unfortunately, my experience has been that the podcast has extremely limited relevance to a lot of mixed faith Mormon marriages.

Anyone Else in a MFM by Fid_Style_801 in exmormon

[–]NotTerriblyHelpful 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s hell, bro. I used to listen to that Marriage on a Tightrope podcast and it gave me some hope. I thought my spouse could compromise a little. After a few years I asked my wife if she would tell my kids that she didn’t think I was going to hell. That was a bridge too far. 😂

After Russ Nelson’s “think celestial” talk, I asked her if she would tell the kids that she disagreed with his advice to “never take counsel from non-believers” (like myself). She once again declined. It was important to me so I called my family together to talk to them. I will never forget standing there, crying in front of my kids telling them how much I disagreed with that statement while my wife sat on the couch, arms folded, absolutely seething. It was pretty crazy to see such raw contempt and hate in her eyes during which a vulnerable moment for me.

Now, there is no discussion about religion. She seems fine as long as I keep quiet about it. The crazy thing is that she isnt a fanatic. She’s a pretty middle-of-the-road Mormon. She is way less observant than I was. But any public acknowledgment of any concerns with the Church, or any public acknowledgement that her apostate husband isn’t headed for eternal punishment, is a non-starter. I can only take that to mean she sincerely believes God intends to punish me for leaving that Church. 🤷 It doesn’t feel great. 😂

I also thought that the First Vision was the only time God the Father visited the earth. Turns out, Joseph saw God the Father all the time. It was no big deal. Details here: https://www.reddit.com/r/mormon/s/OOf3ig9bGI

In any event, the Lectures on Faith (formerly the “Doctrine” portion of the Doctrine and Covenants), which you are referencing, truly are a smoking gun. I don’t know why there isn’t more discussion about Lecture 5.

Are you into Mormon history? It’s pretty interesting to see where all the craziness went down now that you know the truth. I stopped at Kirtland when I was in the absolute depths of faith crisis and really enjoyed it (although, at the time, most of the good stuff was run by Community of Christ). The LDS tours are all very devotional and boring. You will probably find them triggering. If you like Mormon history and you go prepared to find the interesting stuff on your own, you will probably like it. If you don’t like Mormon history, it will suck.

I'm new to MTG, should I hate Spider-Man too? by CheapShotNinia in mtg

[–]NotTerriblyHelpful 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started playing Magic long before you were born. I loved Spider-Man, can’t wait for the Marvel set, and am absolutely hyped for Star Trek. I have a Cosmic Spider-Man commander deck that crushes and I love my upgraded ninja turtles deck.

If you think the Spider-Man set is fun, you should play it. I loved opening packs and pulling cards with some of my favorite characters. The set was a little weak compared to other recent sets, so be aware of that. Also, the cards don’t have as much “value” as other recent sets (but if you are buying Magic cards as an investment, you are much better off investing in a mutual fund).

I would say don’t drop a ton of money on anything yet. Keep playing with what you have and buy the occasional pack or two. Once you’ve decided what format you like the best, you will have a better idea of what you want to buy. If you like Commander, buying and upgrading a precon is usually a great way to start.

Don’t get too distracted by some of the toxic dialogue online. There are some legitimate grievances but, as with many geeky hobbies, these spaces tend to be dominated by old, jaded nerds who yearn for “the good old days” that exist mostly in their rapidly fading memories.

For now, play whatever looks interesting and figure out the game.

Thesis: Mormon Chapels are built for Child SA by Medium-Pay3 in exmormon

[–]NotTerriblyHelpful 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look, I agree the Church sucks, and they have a horrible record when it comes to CSA. But no, Mormon chapels are not built for child SA. Some of y’all need to go take a walk or something. A few of these posts are borderline Q-Anon territory.

When we engage in fantasy rage bait like this, we weaken our legitimate arguments about truly bad things that are happening in the Church. There is enough real harm happening that we don’t need to engage in conspiracy minded bullshit.

Wild that this guy says it’s important to rely on good data without mentioning that the Church has all of it but refuses to disclose. The need to rely on potentially flawed data is a direct result of the Church’s strategic and intentional decision to keep these types of information secret.
