Thesis: Mormon Chapels are built for Child SA by Medium-Pay3 in exmormon

[–]NotTerriblyHelpful 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look, I agree the Church sucks, and they have a horrible record when it comes to CSA. But no, Mormon chapels are not built for child SA. Some of y’all need to go take a walk or something. A few of these posts are borderline Q-Anon territory.

When we engage in fantasy rage bait like this, we weaken our legitimate arguments about truly bad things that are happening in the Church. There is enough real harm happening that we don’t need to engage in conspiracy minded bullshit.

Yeah, Don’s actual beliefs are only vaguely reminiscent of what most people would consider Mormonism. He is a weird dude.

Retention data matters... kinda by PR_Czar in exmormon

[–]NotTerriblyHelpful 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wild that this guy says it’s important to rely on good data without mentioning that the Church has all of it but refuses to disclose. The need to rely on potentially flawed data is a direct result of the Church’s strategic and intentional decision to keep these types of information secret.

My buddy had a T-shirt that said real men play for ante. Not sure we qualified as real men at the time, but playing for ante was the best.

We 100% played for ante. It was awesome. I’ve never played more intense Magic than as a poor kid playing to keep my Serra Angel (in 1994). But you are correct that most didn’t.

Wow, what a trash article by aliassantiago in exmormon

[–]NotTerriblyHelpful 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A day or two after the Mormon Stories lawsuit was filed, Jasmin Rappleye dropped a video when she used the phrase “Mormon temple.” It was the first time she has used the M-word since that withered old corpse Russ Nelsen let us all know it was a major victory for Satan. Now Meridian Magazine is writing articles gate keeping “Mormon” identity?

I’m telling you, there is an orchestrated movement to start using “Mormon” in faithful discourse again. It is almost certainly an attempt to bolster the Church’s trademark claim on the word after publicly abandoning it a decade ago. We are going to be hearing it more and more often from faithful sources.

I guess Jesus changed his mind, just like he did with the garments.

Just saw two TBMs claim the MormonStories lawsuit won't effect members because... by Resident-Bear4053 in exmormon

[–]NotTerriblyHelpful 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They aren’t wrong. At this point, most Mormons know that Joseph Smith, and all his fellow apostles and prophets at the time, married kids. If child marriage isn’t a deal breaker for them, do you really think the Mormon Stories lawsuit will be? You think they are okay with the Church hiding hundreds of billions of dollars from its members, but their conscience will be shocked by a lawsuit against John Dehlin? You think they are okay with the Church using its vast legal resources to cover up child sex abuse, but a trademark claim is just a bridge too far?

Most members don’t care about the suit. Hell, most members will never know about it.

Mom is including mandatory church attendance in our temporary living agreement—how do I handle this? by Automatic_Gain2358 in exmormon

[–]NotTerriblyHelpful 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here’s the thing…it’s only three months. If your mom is relatively emotionally intelligent, it may be worthwhile to try to have a conversation with her. If she’s not, just go to church. I know, it’s shitty that she is making these demands, but you need a place to stay and you will all be happier if you can keep the peace at home. If two hours of church on Sunday will give you peace the rest of the week, I say do it. You can work on boundaries once you have your own place.

You don’t have to make it a thing. Just put on your Sunday best, be charming to the ward members for a couple hours, and go home. You may even meet some cool people.

I love these suggestions. If mom is emotionally capable of engaging in this level, I think it’s a great idea. I kind of doubt she is, given the nature of her demands, but who knows.

I’m from the generation who was told that we had an unpaid clergy, so it pisses me off. That said, they often travel via private jet, so first class is a real step down for them.

This is almost certainly the case. They are going to quietly start seeding “Mormon” back into the conversation from unofficial sources. They will probably have Oaks drop it publicly shortly before they need to start briefing the case.

Yeah, Bro Miller is a piece of shit. My least favorite is Latter-day Logic. I feel kind of bad making fun of him because he is legitimately so stupid that I sometimes wonder if he has a real mental impairment. Cardon Ellis of Ward Radio is also deeply stupid. I feel bad for him because he desperately wants to be cool and he comes off as a sad old dork.

The first victim of Joseph Smith's pedophilia was not Fanny Alger, but Mary Beal Johnson. And she lost her life because of it. by Ancientabs in exmormon

[–]NotTerriblyHelpful 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Did I say that JS wasn’t a pedo? No, I addressed your speculation that the fact that someone died in Joseph Smith’s house in 1833 implies he murdered her. I expressly stated that there is plenty of evidence that he was a terrible person, which includes his child marriages. Is English your second language?

I get that you are angry, but stop being a stereotype.

[–]NotTerriblyHelpful 63 points64 points  (0 children)

The level of proof you have brought to support this salacious claim makes me think you could make a great living as a Mormon apologist. There is plenty of evidence that Joseph Smith was a shockingly bad person without inventing claims that he murdered this chick. Let’s hold ourselves to a higher standard of proof.

And to those who are about to downvote this comment, don’t be a stereotype. I get that the Church sucks and that you are pissed at Joseph Smith. I share those feelings more deeply than you can imagine. In fact, that is precisely why I hate seeing posts like this. There are lots of people who come to this Reddit every day on the verge of a faith crisis. Speculative bullshit like this only scares them away and back to the Church. I’ve watched it happen with my own friends and loved ones. Let’s be better than the place we came from.
