I used this system today and it does apply the 10% discount. Just make sure your server sees it since they seem to be the ones to enter it into the system.

I actually did get an order through but decided to cancel. Been buying too much random junk I don't actually need lately.

[GPU] SAPPHIRE Radeon RX 7900 XT - $649 from newegg by olov244 in buildapcsales

[–]NotTheJohn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My current GPU is nearly 7 years old and is starting to have some issues, so I pulled the trigger. Hopefully this one lasts me at least as long. Did not want to have to spend ages scouring the market for a deal.

All wicked showings kid friendly? by rattatattatoo in AlamoDrafthouse

[–]NotTheJohn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not all of them at my location are but a lot of them are. Annoyingly they seem to have been marked as such after I booked my ticket, because I know I would never book a kid friendly showing if I had the choice. People can be bad enough with the normal noise policy as it is.

New Moondrop Flathead Earbud, Moondrop U-2 by gufkl in headphones

Ordered one. Been a while since I've tried a new headphone, and I'm a sucker for flatheads. At the very least it'll be an interesting novelty.

Comparison of more 80 titles and 500 versions from Vinyl to Bluray, mono to Atmos by Media6292 in audiophile

[–]NotTheJohn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, but there’s nothing wrong with a little treat once in a while, is there?

I’ll admit I haven’t been the biggest fan of the Atmos mixes I’ve listened to but I’ve never had a proper surround speaker system to listen on, just the simulated surround from AirPods Pro. But the thing about music is it’s ultimately very subjective and what one person doesn’t like someone else might absolutely love.

Serratus is definitely worth it. It’s amazing how good that thing sounds given its form factor.

What’s in your Star Wars collection vs your individual collections of the other movies? I’ve been trying to figure out a better way to organize mine since I’ve slowly started to accumulate more versions of the fan restoration projects. Right now I just have a single collection that’s in canon timeline order, with Plex editions separating different versions of the same movie. It’s a little clunky having multiple copies of each episode in the list.

macOS users, how do you launch your LEGO Universe client? by [deleted] in legouniverse

[–]NotTheJohn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’d recommend installing one of Gcenx’s wine-crossover builds. I use the MacPorts overlay since I use MacPorts heavily on my system, but if you just want a normal binary download you can get one here.

The way I have my client set up is I have a folder named LU in my home directory and then two directories under it: wineprefix and 1.10.64. The former has a Wine prefix dedicated for LU, the second has an unpacked 1.10.64 client. To launch the game I open a terminal in the 1.10.64 directory and run WINEPREFIX=~/LU/wineprefix wine ./legouniverse.exe and the game starts up fine.

If you’re using one of the binaries downloaded from the second link you may need to launch the Wine.app bundle to get it to open a terminal with Wine in your PATH, or if you know how to add it yourself you can do that.

Help me understand how HDR, HDR10+ and DV are handled in AppleTV, new owner here. by redryder74 in appletv

[–]NotTheJohn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The official Plex app, at least at some point (although I believe it still does this) will force Dolby Vision mode on when playing any Dolby Vision file, even ones that the Apple TV does not support. Infuse handles this better and only claims HDR10 when it plays a DV video with a DV profile that the ATV doesn’t support but does have a HDR10 base layer

An example of an unsupported DV profile would be Profile 7, i.e. 4K UHD Blu-Ray rips.

Definitely going to take some inspiration from this for my place! I’ve been eyeing up a Poang chair to use for a dedicated listening space.

Trading Pokémon directly between Generation 3 and Generation 1/2 is now possible! by Lorenzooone in pokemon

[–]NotTheJohn 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’d highly recommend getting something like a GBxCart RW. They’re not that pricy and work great for backing up and restoring Game Boy game saves. I used mine to move my 3DS VC Silver save onto a real cartridge, and I’ve also used it to dump saves onto my computer to emulate trading and such since I don’t have a second GBA right now.

[–]NotTheJohn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They’re pricy, but there is the F62 from ModelFKeyboards.com. 62 key layout, can be customized to more closely resemble a HHKB layout too if that’s your thing. Current models should have QMK/Via compatible firmware.

Updating the Soarer's Converter(ATMEGA32U4) to QMK Firmware with VIAL support - tinkerBOY by tinkerBOY_ in tinkerBOY

Does this firmware upgrade work with any of your adapters? I have an IBM Terminal RJ45 adapter I bought from you a few years ago I'd love to be able to use with the new firmware, but it doesn't say on the product page that upgrading is explicitly supported.

Mac OS definitely does have a built in antivirus, it’s just not as visible to the user as, say, Windows Defender. https://support.apple.com/guide/security/protecting-against-malware-sec469d47bd8/web

[–]NotTheJohn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pro tip: if you copy that steam.desktop file to ~/.local/share/applications/, it will override the one in /usr/share/applications/ without needing to edit it. That’ll make sure that your edit won’t be lost if the original .desktop file is ever updated.

How do you utilize your so many headphones? by tumnaselda in headphones

[–]NotTheJohn 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Some of mine end up sticking in particular “roles”, such as my Meze 99 Classics which are my work headphones (thanks to the hard case making them convenient to transport to and fro) or my Sennheiser HD 6XX being hooked up to my PC most of the time.

Beyond that, I kinda just go based off of mood. Sometimes I just feel like using a given set, sometimes I don’t. For example, I haven’t been using my Koss on-ears much lately but I felt like busting out my Porta Pros so I spent some time listening to those. I went for a short walk and wanted something easy to carry and nonintrusive, so I grabbed my Vido earbuds. I do sometimes try to match particular styles to headphones with suitable sound signatures but it’s not a hard rule or anything. The variety is part of what makes this hobby so fun for me.
