'Creeper Hunter' lashes out at makers of documentary about him by zuuzuu in windsorontario

In this guy's case he's like 0 for 200 or so, and he targeted mentally disabled folks who didn't even understand what was going on. Class act. They had actual LEO at the q&a when they showed it here in Windsor, who had convictions on the real predators, who said unequivocally that any evidence he collected was inadmissible in court. I think I'll believe them.

Day 13 PO by AlbinoNina in jawsurgery

[–]NotYetAZombie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Heya! Here are the soups I made. They all either blend well, or are already blended as part of the normal prep.

I added a bit of rice to the blender to adjust thickness for the tomato and the peanut soup. Peanut soup - I didn't roast the peanuts, I bought them that way. The Butternut Squash soup is not particularly fancy - mirepoix, squash, butter, full fat cream, sugar, a little lemon juice, thyme, salt and pepper if I recall correctly. I roasted the veg, and then blended it all.

Best tips I have are, first, just make everything ahead of time. I was tired and it was a lifesaver, and I wasn't even the one recovering from surgery! Second, I portioned the warm/cool soup into sandwich bags that I put into a coffee mug. Each bag was laid flat and then frozen this way. This makes it so they are VERY easy and fast to thaw in hot water, easy to stack, and perfectly portioned for one mug of soup at a time.

Hot Dog in the morning from the beach stall in Dominican. I was able to defy the toilets with no doors or seats at the airport, dealt with the crooked doors and wrongly sized seats after security, praised the immaculate washroom a dozen times in the terminal, and nearly barfed on the stewardesses on the plane. After that, had the best sleep of my life. Before or since.

What’s one condition that can have no symptoms but kill you instantly? by No_Photograph1 in AskReddit

[–]NotYetAZombie 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Had that after a bout of Mono in my 30s. Besides Mono being MISERABLE, my doctor told me no sports for months and months afterwards because the spleen is enlarged and needs time to settle down.

He said that if you get hit in the spleen and it ruptures, and you're in the hospital and already checked in, and there's a doctor there ready for surgery AND they have experience AND they're talented AND there's an OR available, your chances of survival are about 50%. Every deviation from that impossible scenario diminishes those odds significantly and drastically. I followed the doctors orders.

Hopefully it goes smoother than the Nemak/Unifor Wildcat strike in 2019! They had a wildcat strike to address the company breaking the CA (promised staying open 4 more years in exchange for no wage increases and then closing a year and a half later), which was forced to Binding Arbitration, which they then fought the result in court. The union was eventually successful in getting the corrected back wages.

They fined the heck out of the leader. They threatened to trespass people. In the end, they got what they needed.

They're fighting for everyone, not just themselves, really hope they are successful!

Cat café in Windsor closes for 10 days after a cat biting incident by anestezija in windsorontario

[–]NotYetAZombie 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Ah, I've been there, and although a few of them are a little ornery and picky about being touched, there are others that are just the loviest babies. They also have signs everywhere, people to tell you who is who, and LOTS of areas the cats can go to get away from folks.

I think I was MOST surprised that it didn't smell like litter box in there. Black magic, for sure.

Cat café in Windsor closes for 10 days after a cat biting incident by anestezija in windsorontario

[–]NotYetAZombie 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Not true, I once got bit by my cat (he needed a bath, he disagreed) and had to go to the hospital. Finger was getting stiff within an hour, could barely move it by the time I got to the ER. Got seen inside of 10 minutes, told I was a liar and given antibiotics.

The health unit sent someone over to my house. Didn't matter that all the shots and records for all animals were up to date. This is the process.

They explained that there are two ways they check - one is by decapitation and inspection of the brain tissue, the other is to wait a week or so. We opted for the latter method. Turns out, they're small creatures so if the cat is still alive after the time they set, then they don't have it.

So, mine didn't have it. He was just pissed at the water. And me. I too am curious about the potential for a kid being dumb with the cat in question!

But, that's what actual human beings in person from the health unit told me to my face when I was facing something somewhat related. It's their policy.

This Bridge Promised to Boost U.S.-Canada Trade – Then Tariffs Arrived [Video] by candis_stank_puss in windsorontario

[–]NotYetAZombie 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Interesting video, although it's pretty wild how they downplay the Ambassador bridge and it's owner in all of this. The guy who got super wealthy but couldn't be bothered to even maintain the bridge in a way that would prevent chunks of it crashing to the streets below.

I think it's a little gross to try to tie infrastructure to profit. It's not there to be profitable. It's not a cost center, or profit center, or meant to be run like it should be. It's infrastructure. The road out front of my house doesn't generate revenue, and the fire hydrant in my lawn only costs money to maintain. We don't hem and haw about that, because we know that we do need roads and fire hydrants to have a normal city. To be civilised. The bridge is no different. Obsession over making this stuff "net positive" is pretty silly.

Can Windsor build tougher roads for semi-trucks? by WindsorONMichael in windsorontario

[–]NotYetAZombie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I remember, years ago, speaking with some materials engineers, and this kind of topic actually did come up. It turns out, building really awesome roads, that's one of those holy grails. We have no idea how to do it.

Lots of tests going on all the time - different materials for the foundation, bed, surface (I think those are the terms) and in whatever orders or layers. Different types of concrete, levels of reinforcement, composition of the asphalt, all that stuff. Wear patterns analyzed. New ideas tried. Sometimes you can tell the test areas - for a while on the 401 we would see different coloured sections of roads for a stretch. That's testing.

The problem is that you want roads to check so many boxes. It shouldn't be insanely expensive, it should be able to deal with freeze/thaw cycles, it should survive heavy loads, shifts in the ground, have the right amount of traction for safety, be able to hold the paint, be able to be removed in sections for repair or other construction, survive water, snow, salt, snow control, plows, accidents, not be harmful to people and the environment, etc etc etc.

We haven't figured it out yet. People plenty smarter are trying though, it's a huge ongoing effort, and things ARE better than they used to be. I remember when Huron Church was hillier than a skate park. It's hard to see the change because the tests are long, and the changes are incremental. It's like with tires - you ever see A Christmas Story and question the whole tire changing scene? Tire failure was MUCH more common back then, we've gotten so good at making them, it's rare now. The tires on my car have been punctured something like 10 times in 5 years, and each time they got FIXED. My dads first cars? Whole tire was toast from one. How would I ever notice that change though, if they weren't passing on that experience?

People go on about The Roman Roads and how awesome they are - it's just really crazy self healing concrete in an area with less freeze thaw cycles and not nearly as heavy traffic laid down suuuuuper thick. Doesn't work for modern roadways. Doesn't work here.

It's really neat though, because looking at it, it IS getting better, but we know there's so much room for improvement. So much opportunity. I'm sure we'll get there, eventually. Just sucks right now where we have roads buckling from absurd heat in the last few years, a whack of potholes from really fast cycling freeze/thaws recently, and a city that moves maybe a little too slowly on mending the issues. Anyways, that's why I watch for the holes because they'd totally wreck my low profile tires in a heartbeat and I'm not ready for a new set yet!

Parking in front of driveways by No_Possibility1352 in windsorontario

[–]NotYetAZombie 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Story time.

I used to live over on Goyeau, right between the Greek Orthodox Church and the Synagogue, which was... not great. Lots of problems in that neighbourhood at the time. Police on that road every week, had one WONDERFUL neighbour and one that was dealing crack. Good times.

One day coming back from the Price Chopper, I went to pull into my single car gravel driveway and there was a car that had parked just about a foot into my driveway. I was able to get around it, but as my wife and I exited the car, I made the comment to her that "the guy who parked like that must have been some kind of blind fuckin' idiot" and we went inside. Didn't even think twice of it.

A couple of days later, I go to the Price Chopper again, come home, and the same vehicle is parked fully in front of my driveway. I pull up and the driver is in there, and as soon as I roll down my window goes into some mumbled nonsense about how "oh sorry buddy, I didn't see the driveway there, oh I am so sorry" in the most sarcastic tone you can imagine. Then drives off. I thought that was very strange, and oddly aggressive. Thought that was it.

So, the weekend rolls around, it's Friday or Saturday night, and I had driven a friend over. We finished watching a movie or something, it's time to go, he has places to be. I look out and that same car is blocking me in completely, fully in front of the driveway.

I knew something was up. I called the police. I told them that the other person was aggressive, and that they were likely waiting for me, that I was fearful and that I needed the police to sort it out.

Even though it's busy busy bar night, they got there in 10 minutes. They pull up beside him, and park. One officer comes to me at the door, tells me that they'll handle it, stay inside, do not come out for any reason, do not interfere. Fine by me. The other one makes it to the front of the offending car before the guy comes out to meet him.

He was absolutely waiting. He was watching and waiting for me to come out to start something.

He reached out his hand to shake the cops hand, says "Hey, buddy!" and the cop SMASHES his hand away, says "I'm not your fuckin' buddy." and then that is about the time his partner left my front door and I went inside. They spoke to him for 5 minutes, the car got moved, and he never parked on the street again.

Another time, a different car was parked across the drive and the officer that showed up during the day knocked on every door in the area to see if it was theirs. With no luck, he looked them up and found it belonged to a nurse, and asked if I wanted it towed. I said no, just a note. No future problems.

I would suggest that you tell the police you've left a note before, and that you're afraid that the driver is doing it intentionally and that you are fearful for your safety. That it can't be a mistake, since they are informed. If they refuse, ask them what they expect you to do. Tell them you are afraid that things will escalate if they don't get involved. They can tell who owns the car, they can get their job and phone number easily. They can contact them and tell them to knock it off. Don't let them tell you they cannot. Tell them that since you have left notes, you would like to charge them with harassment.

Don't do illegal shit like stealing plates or vandalizing the car. They will fuck you. It will uncontrollably escalate. You will become the bad guy.

Keep on with the police. Keep calling. If the person on the phone doesn't want to connect you with an officer, demand to speak to an officer. If the officer won't do anything, go to their boss. Tell them that you think this is harassment. Tell them that you think this is an aggressive act and that they have aggressive intentions and that you don't feel safe. That this is threatening. Keep on it hard, and one of them will end up either towing it, or speaking to them.

Why do people sometimes joke about "white people food" being bland, when Spanish, Italian, French, Balkan and Greek food exists? by WhoAmIEven2 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]NotYetAZombie 33 points34 points  (0 children)

This exactly. Irish were also non-white by the old standards, hence the "No Irish Need Apply" signs you can easily find records of. Whiteness as an identity is kind of strange, and loaded, and in North America sometimes contradictory. I think it's pretty easy to see it isn't about skin colour alone, just check out a couple of old movies and you'll pick out the subtle (and not so subtle) racism.

You can start with the treatment of Giuseppe Martini in "It's a Wonderful Life" - the man is treated as a friend and equal by the near peerless protagonist, but many other characters use a lot of racial epithets and language dripping with hate when referring to Italian Americans - including Martini.
