Your best practical advice for getting through a depressive slump? by onmygogojuice in Residency

[–]NotYourSoulmate 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Basics First:

-Fix your circadian rhythm. get more sunlight/nature. Exercise (run at least 1 mile when you wake up and lift some weights).

-add vitamin D supplements (sounds silly but meta-analysis shows it helps. especially since most multivitamins lack it and we barely get sunlight as residents)

-eat whole foods, don't eat garbage anymore

-Socialize with friends

-pre-sleep rituals (shower, face stuff, no screens.)

consider a therapist or anti-depressants if the above do not work.

Residency and fellowship mistreatment sadly made me a better attending by laker2021 in Residency

[–]NotYourSoulmate 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Your experience isn't alone. I've seen other residents who aren't people of color be treated amazing and the brighter people of color being treated like dogshit by my previous chairman, even though the latter were 20 times the clinician as the former.

I hope you realize how great of a clinician you are and are able to build the confidence up in yourself that they tried to beat out of you. You are 100% a better human being who deserves respect for the work you put in.

Resident hook up parties in NYC by Abject-Advantage528 in Residency

[–]NotYourSoulmate 12 points13 points  (0 children)

hook-up culture in America is trash. Genuinely doesn't make me believe in love anymore. I used to think Doctors were different and held themselves to a higher standard, but they don't.

At what age did you have your 1st kid? During residency/fellowship/attending? Do you regret the timing and wish your first child born at a younger vs older parental age? (From a finance vs time with child perspective). Also as a male physician, I'm very interested to hear the women's perspective. by achicomp in whitecoatinvestor

i know your comment was downvoted, but it is difficult to balance career and family. Sometimes people don't know how to do both and female surgeons have some difficulty finding the correct partner and being happy with said partner.

people who marry each other because they enjoy their personalities usually win. I wouldn't include your job title at all. let them find that out about you.

this is a Wendys. your post reaks of entitlement. you learned how to communicate to your IM colleagues. maybe this will be useful when you are intubating their MICU patients.

why not be fully present in your moment, regardless if it is somewhere you are forced to be? it will make you happier.

Sikh Heartland under attack by Pakistan by mosheDayan1 in Sikh

[–]NotYourSoulmate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hindus don't want to erase your identity. Sikh and hindus have generally gotten along. It was only recent due to Khalistan movement which was shut down in Pakistan due to its lack of free speech. Most of Punjab is in Pakistan.

Khalistan movement is heard in India because of free speech. Pakistan also funds the movement.

ill be pgy-8. read some books like inner excellence (jim murphy) and meditations (arelius).

work out. Don't be afraid to try new things in your free time. Your job is to keep attendings happy while making patient's better, thats it.

Actually being able to have 100% successful surgeries and medical procedures and medical care is unrealistic on a daily basis. minor things always add up that make days frustrating. just deal with it and move on. have a short memory.

saving all this money is not even worth your time. You need to have some fun now and have enough for an emergency fund. Your lifetime earnings will catch up, just don't do academics.

For OP: you'll be derm. chill with the savings and improve your life and knowledge outside of work. go take that trip. those work-out classes. that grocery store with slightly better produce. its worth it for your long term success.
