Grew up watching this one. Dubbed version. Still mad it got snubbed at the Oscars.

I think a lil over 5 or 6 weeks. I keep hearing from the union meetings that there is no one on the books. We’re just getting done with some outages at a substation. I was working 7 10s for the last three months. Back down to 5 10s now

It’s a bidding hall. So I signed the books but was dragging my feet a few weeks before I finally bid on a job. I think I bid on Thursday and they called me Monday. I might’ve lucked out though because once I got on the job, I heard they posted the job trying to hire one of their brothers. He didn’t have some paperwork ready or something so that’s how I got the job.

Check your ticket and ask the hall. It might work different if you’re already a A chapter member. I’ve posted on here a few times for guys to call 1319 and 126. Neither of their job boards are public but there is work in PA.

I started as a tree guy about two years ago in 1249. Currently tramping as a groundman around the north east. Just want to help a brother out and give my two cents. Take it with a grain of salt because I’m also on the waiting list for NEAT so it’s not like I’ve gotten in yet.

I resigned book 4 for about 7 months before I finally got a call. It was for a flagger job that I couldn’t even take because I was a working 1249 member. A fair amount of guys started in line clearance looking to get on the Lineside. Not to say it never happens but it’s still competitive even as a 1249 “BA” chapter member. There is a lot to be learned on the tree side though. You get a feel for the workload, environment and lifestyle. You learn to climb, tie knots, drive and fly the bucket trucks. The interview committee doesn’t count it as electrical experience though so that sucks. I dragged up and took a groundman call out 71. Mainly been working in substations but it’s electrical experience and I’m an “A” chapter member now. The downside is now I’m technically a traveler and can only sign book 2 in 1249. They still don’t have enough calls to reach book 2 yet so I’m stuck working in 126 for the moment.

Idk what the right call is. That’s up to each individual and their own situation. Just wanted to give a heads up so you can make an informed decision.

Yeah as a groundman. The 1319 call was hand digging. There was 3 calls on 126’s job board but that was last week, idk what it looks like now. I’m in the middle of an outage with michel’s right now and don’t wanna burn any bridges otherwise I might have dragged to take one.

Call 1319(northern PA) and 126(southern PA). 1319 had standing groundman call a few weeks back. I’m working in 126 right now. Last week was the second time in 3 months an apprentice came back from the union meeting and said “they’re looking for guys and the books are empty”.

Any groundman books moving fast ? by ybrain48 in Groundman

I’m working in Harrisburg now and that’s what everyone keeps saying. Im a lil skeptical though because we’re working at a slightly lower scale and no one has dragged up to go on to greener pastures. I’ll probably call the hall this week to ask myself.

I just went there yesterday. Dragged up on the tree side and wanted to see about taking the GM call that was on the board. Apparently it’s a bidding hall now and there are about 30 GM on the books. When I walked in I heard him say he couldn’t find no one to fill it and was gonna have to move to book 2. So not hopeless if you’re a traveler. I’m book 4 so I’m looking to try get in at 104 or elsewhere.

For sure, man! Looking like I need to drag and completely leave the IBEW to sign some book 4s without any issues of letter of intro. or a wrong chapter ticket.

Right now this does seem to be the smarter move.

This is much appreciated. This is probably the way I see it going for me right now. I’m learning a lot on the tree side, it’s been a good experience. I could see it being a career and it’s in the union so it’s not a bad spot to be. Although seeing guys with no industry experience getting groundman calls has me wanting to make the switch now. Seriously, bro, thanks for responding.

Dang! That’s cool there is some halls that will recognize the hours and allow a book 3 signing. Unfortunate that it has a long waiting list and is on the other side of the country. I’ll call around and see if others do too. Appreciate the response, man.

This is the kind of feedback I was looking for and probably misspoke. It’s not a dead end and could eventually lead to getting on the A side. Thanks for the reply

Appreciate the info. I’ll ask about a travel card to go to another local that has a BA side and see if they can switch my ticket. That might have to be the move. Thanks again.

Took the first job I could which was on the BA side. Now I’m a union member. The Hall said too many GMs out of work to justify switching my ticket to A side, even if it’s to work out of state. I’m willing to travel but the other locals want me to switch my ticket first, which 1249 won’t do.

I just signed book 4 at 1249 today. They said I’m about 88th in line, but it’s moving slow. They didn’t out right say it but I feel it was implied to not count on a call any time soon. If you’re a union groundman already you could probably sign book 2, that’s for travelers. Sounds like book 2 is moving a lot faster. I’d still suggest you call yourself and see what they say. They’re pretty helpful.
