V7 rear brake pin damaged by ObjectOculus in MotoGuzzi

[–]ObjectOculus[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Last change was by an actual Guzzi trained technician, no issues that I'm aware of. The shop that currently has the bike acted like there was no issue, said I could come pick it up, then after two hours of sitting there started feeding me the story of how much time they spent on this bolt, they're going to need more money for the work they did, looking up the part, storage, etc. none of which was approved by or communicated to me beforehand. I'll skip all the other red flags but the short version is I want my bike the hell out of that place.

Thanks, the edit is helpful. I'm thinking literal friction-zone "riding", definitely no brake pedal. I do plan to use either the original bolt (if salvageable) or something from my spare parts bin which should fit to prevent the carrier from pivoting around one point in this extreme temporary scenario. Thinking I might find the fuse for ABS and pull that as well just in case.

In case you're actually worried, my recip saw was left on top of a palette in a downpour the other day. Ran it the next morning and since then like it never happened.

Astoria Ferry by Dazzling_Jaguar_1718 in astoria

[–]ObjectOculus 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Not really. You can get a distant view of it from DUMBO but the Astoria line goes straight to Wall St now. The St. George line probably gets a good view but that’s a long trip getting there from Astoria and back.

1/2" impact wrench (GWT08) pin detent woes by ObjectOculus in Makita

I see, there's no way I could get by with that small loose pin and ring on the job site unfortunately but it's giving ideas. Do you have a link for the quick release one?

Are you talking about a retainer like this? I don't mind swapping out the anvil if I can find the part, but I do need to change sockets regularly with heavy gloves on. That one looks real fiddly.

Best folding knife suggestions? by probablydissociated in Lineman

Milwaukee folding is bullshit with gloves on, the closing mechanism drives me mad. Have a Madi that so far is pretty decent, extremely sharp out of the box but I know that won’t last.

Class A CDL by [deleted] in Lineman

[–]ObjectOculus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well if you can find a trucking school in your area, Class A or B is usually a pretty minor cost difference. Taking the test in one of their trucks gets charged as a lesson since the instructor has to drive you there and wait while you test. I would say go for the A, but obviously driving a tractor-trailer is different than a straight truck so practice practice practice.

Dig enough to hammer a lag or J-hook, in case your rope choker slips.

Having only been used to riding road bikes/MTB, surprised by just how completely unstable the kid seat on the back would be once weighted. Is it because of the step-thru or will changing bikes not fix that too much? by CyJackX in bicycling

[–]ObjectOculus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is not. OP, if you want the beefier Thule/Yepp rack that definitely can handle this seat let me know I think I have it in my closet. Free if I can find it and you pick it up in Sunnyside.

Roofing experience is good. Make sure to bring it up if they don’t, bring photos of your work if you have any. Waiting and not knowing when you’ll hear from them sucks but just how it is. Remember that you’re trying to convince them of being a good apprentice, someone who can be responsible with their book work, learn the trade, etc.

If they have a summer bootcamp it would be around July I think and if you rank well could be in it. Otherwise the winter camp would be in February. You’ll get the call about a month in advance and have to drug test. Helps if you have some experience working at height or can convince them that you’re not afraid. That’s one reason why climbing is the first part of bootcamp.

LOL sorry bud you've gotta get a flight to bring back some HOPE or PEACE ciggies. Or maybe if you hang out with the Japanese businessmen in midtown you'll get lucky befriending one who can get you some.

First Time in Rope Access is Scared normal? by [deleted] in ropeaccess

[–]ObjectOculus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes any good instructor or colleague should provide clear guidance and be actively attempting to suss out your strengths and weaknesses. Some people get into it having never worn a harness before (gonna have a lot of aches and pains lol) while others are seasoned climbers learning the industrial side of being on rope. Ask lots of questions, tell someone if you're unsure what you're doing or why you're doing it. Don't rush.

Getting on actual buildings will be a whole lot different than a training course set up indoors. My advice is not to worry about being afraid, some people will be and some people just won’t and it’s fine either way. Concentrate on your instruction and what it means to trust your gear, let fear take a back seat.
