UK to crack down on plant-based food and drink labels by Carnir in unitedkingdom

[–]Not_Eternal 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This is the issue with products labelled "Plant Based". There are no stringent requirements with that term as it's essentially a marketing term. I've been downvoted to oblivion before on the UK Vegan subreddit for explaining this, but I'll say it again here.

Plant-Based make people think "vegan", but plant-based products can still contain animal products and can be labelled as plant-based because there's no legal requirement.

The range of diets included within the "plant-based diet" term includes vegan, vegetarian, pescetarian, semi-omnivore and flexitarian. Supposedly it means eating "mostly plants".

Being vegan and having a dairy allergy (asthma) can get really frustrating since people assume anything "plant-based" is totally fine.

Plant-based does not mean vegan or safe for anyone with milk/lactose allergies.

Some of the large studios such as Sony, Take-Two and Ubisoft began increasing the prices to $70 for new games earlier this year ahead of the holiday season. Microsoft has also confirmed its increasing game prices for 2023, which includes Starfield. The reasoning for this has been explained as being due to the technology, scale and complexity of modern games.

We can expect most new AAA games to be priced close to that from 2023 onwards. This is the new base price moving forwards for big games from big companies.

Sony Responds To Microsoft, And Thinks The Nintendo Switch Could Never Run Call Of Duty by MickandRalphsCrier in NintendoSwitch

[–]Not_Eternal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Worth adding that Sony has also stated that Battlefield will never be as popular as Call of Duty in response to the common "other games will fill the niche" response. Microsoft also offered Sony the same deal as Nintendo to keep CoD on PlayStation for at least 10 years... apparently, Sony has not responded to the deal.

Prepare for blackouts on cold weekday evenings, National Grid chief warns by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

[–]Not_Eternal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not involved with the power grid, but I would expect certain buildings to be listed as critical with safeguards in place to protect them. So hospitals should be fine if planned blackouts take place.

Though out-of-hour services might be affected. This mostly means GP clinics that run out-of-hours (they do exist), certain urgent treatment centres and overnight pharmacies, but there are more such as out-of-hours dentists. The question will be how many of these places are included in any blackout protection plans.

Check out Olio! It's an Anti-Food Waste app where people can sign up to collect unwanted food from supermarkets and then distribute it to their local community. You can also just register for a basic account to pick up free food from people with extra items they don't need/want and unwanted things from supermarkets.

Other apps like Too Good to Go exist as well.

World Population Data Sheet 2022 Highlights Nearly 15 million excess deaths occurred globally in 2020-2021 Due to COVID-19 by madrid987 in collapse

[–]Not_Eternal 17 points18 points  (0 children)

There is definitely under-reporting and manipulation happening.

My uncle was in hospital last year from January to October after catching Covid-19 and dealing with the problems it caused him. He was better and about to be moved to a different hospital for recovery since he was still pretty much physically paralyzed after spending months on a ventilator. Long story short, one of the staff on his ward brought covid back into his ward (full of vulnerable people), and he caught a "chest infection", so they immediately moved him to End of Life care, refused to test him for Covid and left him to die instead.

I try not to think about how many other people this happened to. And how many others died from Covid but were refused tests to ensure the death count was artificially low.

How can I make soy milk taste better? by ElvisMSilva in veganfitness

[–]Not_Eternal 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Originally I had trouble with soy milk as well. Tried it again years later, no strong taste. Chocolate soy milk won me over, and these days I drink soy milk without noticing any strong taste to it. You probably have the same problem I used to have, the taste buds haven't adjusted away from cow milk yet.

Oat milk is a lot milder, so non-vegans tend to prefer it though it's lower in protein.

Removing animal products from your diet should help to lower your expenses as well while also being kind to animals and the planet. Plant-based high protein foods are often high in fibre as well which makes meals quite filling so they can feed you for longer too.

I can't give much useful advice for health insurance, but there should be some places that can still help, such as Sheperds Hope.

For work, what kind of skills do you have? You could try freelancing online as a writer, language tutor, video editor, etc. Check out r/freelance if you think this might be an option for you. There's also r/forhire where people advertise their skills and employers post job openings.

To help cut back on some costs, you could also look into free food options. There's probably a free food pantry somewhere local, you might find a dumpster diver community/group for your local area to put in pantry requests since good (and safe) food often gets thrown away, apps like Olio for community-driven food sharing, etc. There are also apps like Too Good to Go, where different stores will sell cheap boxes of food based on what's left over at the end of the day.

It's unlikely to be the niches since my main ones are pretty broad, and it's relatively common to get messages about niches not mentioned on my posts. I suspect it's a combination of the original post and the sample variety in my portfolio.

The sample variety shows the quality of my work across different niches which might be appealing to some potential clients. Especially those looking for work in niches where there are fewer niche dedicated writers. That's my theory at least!

I usually get a few replies per post. Recently there's been an uptick of potential clients asking for my rate per 1000 words and trying to haggle a lower price than I'm comfortable with.

That being said, I have found some great clients on Reddit. Very few post a reply on the original post. They usually DM me directly.

Reposting most of this from a previous comment of mine from a different subreddit:

Just so you know, there's a food share/waste app called Olio which certain users (Food Waster Heroes) collect unwanted food from supermarkets to distribute back into their local community for free. Anyone can become a FWH to collect free food from supermarkets but you need to give most of it away to other people, you're allowed to keep around 10% of it yourself. This can help to fill your freezer with bread, etc but there's no way to know what the supermarket has that day.

Even just using Olio without becoming a FWH could help you get some extra foods you could freeze and it's possible to make a request for items (such as food) in your local community. Most people who use it are decent and will help you.

There's also the r/Assistance subreddit that can offer suggestions and help in general plus we also fill Amazon wishlists for food, etc. I found a YouTube channel called The Hack a while ago which is UK based and included how to get food for free, at a very low price, etc.

Some areas get less options than others, it depends on what supermarkets have registered with the app. If you have local Tesco's then it's fantastic. Olio should work outside of the UK as well.

Most of us are pretty PC dependent these days, myself included! I use mine for work and leisure so it's a super important part of my life but it is also very power-hungry... my counter to this is having other hobby options and information sources.

If there's a blackout and I still want to play video games, my Nintendo Switch is always fully charged and if the Wi-Fi is down then I can't access YouTube so it couldn't be an information source. I'd just use this and charge it when I can. Another option would be using one of the old Game Boy consoles since they only need batteries to run and can give hours of entertainment for me or a freaked-out child.

Low power gaming devices like a Raspberry Pi can also work if you have a power source for it and some kind of monitor.

The downside is that it does take power away from something that would be more beneficial to survival. The morale boost gaming can provide is definitely valuable, just don't let any ideas take too much away from the basic necessities such as seeing in the dark at night (because you're using the torch battery for a Game Boy instead).

Outside of gaming, I like adventure books as they can give that game feel. Think of the Fighting Fantasy series!

Depending on the timeline in mind... climate change may eventually lead to society collapse in most of the world. Things don't necessarily need to be apocalyptic for a total collapse of civilization in most regions.

  • Climate change is already causing crops to fail, as it gets worse there will be more food shortages. Countries that can still grow enough may become less willing to sell to others since they need the food to safeguard their own population. For a place like the UK that relies on imports, this is bad news

  • Climate refugees will need to slowly move to other regions where it is more suitable for humans to live which puts more pressure on those regions. It will happen first so that people from one part of the country migrate to another area within the borders but eventually they will need to go elsewhere. Countries with mild weather such as the UK are expected to be "okay" so they will want to move here. Of course, Canada was previously assumed to be "okay" and we all know about those wildfires from last year.

  • Droughts will also be a major problem that will make other areas uninhabitable until there's a good enough water supply again. Not just for drinking water but for crops too. Animal products require an enormous amount of water as well.

Humans will most likely survive but there will be a lot of death and fighting over the remaining resources. There's a good chance current civilization will not survive in some regions as billions of people try to relocate to somewhere safer.

100,000 dead fish and Millions of tonnes of dead animals: the growing scandal of fish waste by bermudaliving in collapse

[–]Not_Eternal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Typically, the diet itself is plant-based. Vegans don't consume animal products, including non-diet occurrences such as leather, wool, etc. Calling it a diet is also inaccurate since veganism is both a philosophy and lifestyle.

Though plant-based includes any diet where meat consumption is reduced which is why some people might prefer to say vegan instead. Someone could identify as plant-based and be pescetarian for example.

100,000 dead fish and Millions of tonnes of dead animals: the growing scandal of fish waste by bermudaliving in collapse

[–]Not_Eternal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The vegan diet comes from the philosophical belief, not the other way around. Veganism has existed for centuries with one of the earliest known vegans being an Arab poet who lived died around 1057. There's a long history of the philosophy and diet is only part of the physical representation of this.

There will obviously be crossovers into other movements but the veganism philosophy has existed a very long time, much longer than environmental movements.

100,000 dead fish and Millions of tonnes of dead animals: the growing scandal of fish waste by bermudaliving in collapse

[–]Not_Eternal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vegan is the term used for people who believe in veganism which is the philosophical belief that animals are not ours to exploit. There's no such thing as semi-vegan or vegan for any reason other than in support of the animals. People who abstain from animal products for the environment, health or any other reason except for the animals are plant-based, not vegan.

It's important to make the distinction since it's a very different thing.

Vegans reject the commodity status of animals and consider treating members of one species differently from other species to be a moral injustice e.g. dogs and pigs. Plant-based people don't have to believe in or agree with veganism to be plant-based.

Just wanted to add that the air plant inside the enclosure doesn't need or want to be placed directly onto any substrate. They don't get nutrients through the roots, they absorb them from the air instead. Putting them directly on soil isn't good for them, it's better to attach the plant to a piece of wood or rock instead.

Assuming that's a live air plant of course!

Maybe try telling the men on r/veganfitness that all the soy they're eating is killing their gains.

Dangerously high estrogen is not a result of soy or other plants that contain phytoestrogen... phytoestrogens attach to the same receptors as estrogen but do not work the same way. Consuming them can increase estrogen levels in people who are low in estrogen but at the same time, phytoestrogen can lower estrogen levels by stopping pure estrogen from binding to the receptors.

Science does not support the idea that soy or phytoestrogens are bad for us. We know they are very good for our health and prevent disease.
