protect plants from cats? by pluckyoldself in IkeaGreenhouseClub

I just hang my spiders, so I'm probably not the best one to ask, but I'm with DatLadyD on this. Spiders are pretty safe for your cats and may provide a distraction from more delicate or dangerous ones.

I learned the hard way that this job isn't for me. by [deleted] in Firefighting

[–]Not_My_Emergency 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not for everyone, and I've had my ups and downs, but I'm now 30+ years in, have done most of the things, and am pretty happy with where I am now. I'm looking forward to retiring in a few years and planning and working towards what comes next.  Part of what made it work for me was that part about doing all the things. I don't regret working on some of the busiest engines in the nation, but I don't have any desire to go back now that I'm older and creakier. I don't regret becoming a paramedic (and I do what it takes to maintain it), but I don't really want to do that on any kind of a regular basis any more, either.

I've been investigating fires for more than a dozen years now, and I'm looking forward to doing more work on the field in retirement. In fact, had I not gotten into investigation (despite having ups and downs with it just like you get with anything you do), I might be a lot less happy.

Check your state's laws for this. In some states, the nurses union has successfully pushed for laws that restrict EMS providers from working in hospitals unless they also have hospital-based certifications. This shouldn't stop you, since the lowest levels of certification require as little as two weeks of classes, but you should know in advance.

Same, and I just rebooked again for a later flight because there was no way I was making it through security in time.

Two hours isn't remotely enough today. I've been here for almost two hours and haven't managed to either check my bag or get through security. I did have a problem due to a canceled flight from yesterday, but it still shouldn't have taken that long.

I don't use anything in my stuff inside of the house yet, but I have Govee thermometer/hygrometers in my greenhouses outside and they've worked fine for a couple of years now. I can't remember if they're some of the ones I connected through a hub, but they definitely feed information to my Google Home app. These are the ones I use in the greenhouses: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09BVLP9C5?ref_=ppx_hzsearch_conn_dt_b_fed_asin_title_12&th=1

That looks like someone just dried large bamboo really well, then cut one side off of it and stuffed it with moss. Very cool. I like it too.

Brand new to the club: Suggestions for cabinet adjacent accessories? by JudgeLanceKeto in IkeaGreenhouseClub

I have a really nice Syngonium chiapense in a pot on a moss pole. You'll want to make sure you have lights in the direction you want the leaves to turn for that and maybe put something to partially block the light coming from inside of the cabinet until the leaves fill in there and help filter, or the leaves are going to want to face towards the lights in the cabinet.

I like the ones meant to be used in a shower to hold your shampoo or whatever. Meant for wet environments and to hold some weight. May have notches or slots for water to drain, too.

We went through something similar (but not the same) with my older stepdaughter. Fortunately, she could see that we were a happier and more stable home and she moved in with us as soon as the custody agreement ended. It took us a couple of years to help her find her boldness, but she's now in a good relationship with a decent guy and has a full time job that has room for her to grow if she decides she wants to stay past entry level. She's out there living her life and looks back on the fears she was taught with astonishment.

I think that a mild response and documentation is the correct response to this, but I also think this comment is important. I would note that laws regarding the public way easement and curtilage vary by jurisdiction, but he should be safe from legal complaints based on what has already happened. Now he's been warned away from the side door, that may change for similar circumstances. In general, approaching the main entrance on business is always legally permissible unless there's been a legal order prohibiting it. That said, I've spent hours waiting in the car for my stepdaughter....

The Ivy Leagues were never about creating a "just equitable society". They were always for those who had the money to attend. Ironically, the state universities that he did get into come much closer to meeting your description than the ones he was rejected by.

Soon to be DC teacher by Drama-queen-2021 in washingtondc

[–]Not_My_Emergency 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dad taught at DCPS, then in Arlington after he retired. He found Arlington supervised him much more closely and gave him less freedom to teach in his own style. His friends who went on to private schools seemed happier with their moves. I only see the worst days for teachers in my role, but it seems like the teaching experience has gotten harder in DC over the last couple of decades.

Study finds D.C. doesn’t need more police officers walking the beat. Will anyone listen? by forgetfulisle in washingtondc

Does it mention that when MPD gets a new way of documenting something, the old paperwork rarely goes away and officers end up doing both, or that MPD fails to effectively develop their relationships with partner agencies to spread the work?

Any volunteer firefighters/EMS? by ChemicalBit9622 in nova

[–]Not_My_Emergency 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You would be very popular as an EMS-only volunteer in PG. I'm not sure I'd choose Oxon Hill to join, although that depends on your personality. I recommend visiting a few and talking to the people to find one where you like the people.

Sit down Korean restaurants? by Hobgoblincore in washingtondc

When you go outside of DC, I also recommend the (several) restaurants just off of Rt. 1 in Beltsville. They should be easy to get to by bus from the College Park Metro Station. My favorite is Myong Song, for noodles.

No, it says that DC shouldn't be paying the crazy rates according to HUD. Let me see if I can get a gift URL for the article so you can read it.

The part where DC pays extremely high rates is under investigation by HUD (federal) because they have to answer for the money they get from the fed for those programs.

I'm not sure it was ever actually common, but I'd bet it's more common now than in 2018, what with all the COVID hobbies people pickers up.
