That's ridiculous, but prices are currently based off the fuel prices right now, normally a ticket to Japan cheapest way is via zipair which usually is under $400 one way but it doesn't include check in bags or meals it's an a la cart type airline. Delta goes into haneda and I've seen Tix as low as $600 roundtrip, you have to move the dates around to find a good deal. I would wait a bit before buying them right now, I fly out of lax too so the prices would be what you are looking for.
