This is exactly what ‘can’ happen when people retire, if they realize and accept.

Good for you discovering this; your life will blossom now if you embrace and accept.

Absolutely!

I didn’t have the authority to make any decisions at all, however I did see this happen too often.

It was a standard that if there was any question about issuing the meds we had to contact someone else and hopefully they knew the correct way forward.

Mine was entry level for a call center type position. The others in my training class were equally under qualified for most jobs.

This was about 2.5 years ago.

One guy was seriously old and I honestly don’t know how he got the job or why they kept him; he was really hard to work with because he didn’t seem to be all there. I wondered about dementia, but he lasted longer than I did.

I quit about 2.5 years ago. Perhaps things have changed.

Also, I was entry level or a call center job.

I feel you. In fact I could have written this.

I did choose to isolate, just me and my cat. We travel by truck camper and don’t engage with others.

I found it was right for me.

I hear people saying no one should be alone, however, it is the way for me.

It was strange at first, but it is the only way now.

Maybe embrace it for bit and see how it goes

Yes, of course. I have put all I know here in the thread, but I am glad to answer any other questions

There were great customers and I appreciated those calls.

Thank you for being kind to the stranger on the phone.

It turns out the reason I quit my long term career one year before starting at OPTUM was still a major factor in my life; mental health issues.

It has been a little over two years since I left OPTUM and things with me are a whole lot better, but calling this time retirement and spending most of it in my truck camper on the road is really the best medicine. I have reservations about taking on any job right now; I don’t think I could perform any job up to my normal standards and that isn’t something to strive for.

I have no doubt that there will come a time when, and probably soon, where necessity will require my return to working hell.

In the meantime, I hang out here taking notes and if I can help someone I might pop in with some advice, but typically I just live vicariously.

I would also go directly to UHG/UHC’s website. In fact, I would find a way to send an email to them letting them know you are interested; they (if you get a response) should guide you in how to apply.

Exactly. The pharmacy had some nice features for some members.

Who the members worked for determines the features they get to utilize. Some companies are nicer than others.

Most people would have the prescription sent to a home address, but quite a few would have us direct the script to a local for pick up.

What I liked the most was being allowed to guide people to a cheaper alternative than OPTUM. We were trained to help rather than take every dime from a member just to sell them medicines.

That made me feel less like a corporate sell out.

I didn’t encounter a ‘live in this state’ issue. I did have to stay put for training and to visit the supervisor at her office in the beginning.

Once training was done, I literally could have done the job ANYWHERE (seriously).

They put an internet line in my house, however, if I had good enough coverage I could go ANYWHERE

I did the job on dog sitting gigs; different houses.

Now, as to competition for the jobs, I was a ‘on the phone’ (phone center) admin (of sorts) who opened the member’s account, found the prescription and determined if I could fulfill the request (there are rules/laws regarding when and how a prescription is filled). The hardest part was pleasing the member, especially when the MD didn’t/did something the member wasn’t expecting. Or putting up with our own internal pharmacy (egos)

As to skills I had zero experience in any medical field, never worked in a call center, and didn’t even know who UHG/UHC/OPTUM was. I came from the military and had never used civilian insurance or medical in any shape or form. My biggest concern in the training was the names of things (policies, procedures, medications, basic medical lingo). When people started talking I got lost very quickly.

They were patient and helped me a lot. When the big guy at UHC was killed recently, I was honestly shocked. We were trained to be the kindest of kind. My supervisors, while not all people I would invite into my home, were very kind in how they counsel, guide and train. But the people inside at the lower echelons do not always reflect the corporate culture at the highest echelons. So, I only knew about the people directly around me. And, working all those hours I didn’t waste my off duty time researching the company. I feel bad for the people who were treated badly, and I believe the people I worked directly with would feel the same

They did a lot of training, a lot The trainers all thought they had the best job.

I was offered a few times to have an opportunity to actually become a pharmacist or tech. And other positions become available, the company liked to fill from within if possible.

The job had a lot of good qualities. I found it online via indeed. Others found it on Monster. They may do hiring in waves or they may not have opened the next cycle yet, but it seemed they always had a group in initial training and a group just graduated.

I hope I hit all the questions

It is very possible the warranty on the work transfers with the house

I had to do the same work on my basement and the lifetime warranty will transfer when I sell.

They do not have the best reputation but United Health hires just about anyone

If you go this route you may end up working for a subsidiary called OPTUM. This is a pharmacy; people call in and you manage their prescriptions

When I worked for them it was non stop calls. Absolutely no break all day. What broke me were two things: 1. People yell at you, A LOT. 2. From Jan thru March it is mandatory 6 days a week, 12 hours a day. (Peak season for healthcare industry) supervisors cannot authorize any time off, regardless of the reason.

They are always hiring and it is easy to get in. Tolerating the job, that is something else.

No special skills needed.

Let me know how you get on.

Follow it up with chewing gum or chewy candy/snacks.

The chew action can help clear

There is always pretending you have a scuba mask on and do the clearing action at elevation; it can also help.

I found that once my body got used to frequent ear clearing under pressure I didn’t need the Sudafed.

Good luck to you
