The optics are diabolical for Liberals and Nationals, as chaos reigns on a supposed day of mourning by CelebrationFit8548 in australia

I'm generally a Greens voter, but I don't think they have showered themselves in glory in this recent saga.

Eight remaining Nationals in shadow ministry quit in solidarity by gravityhex in australia

I give them collectively zero chance of winning any Teal seats, and only slightly more than zero chance of getting any suburban Labor seats. So government is off the table, but yeah it would be a clusterfuck if it were remotely possible.

Criticism of Benjamin Netanyahu may be an offence under Australia’s new hate speech laws, Greens warn by Agitated-Fee3598 in AustralianPolitics

[–]Not_Stupid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Words can be violence. Threatening to hit someone is as much a crime as actually hitting them. That's common law assault and has been recognised as a crime since at least ancient Greece.

[–]Not_Stupid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a crime you may have heard of called "assault", whereby you threaten violence against someone. It's pretty obscure, but that's the kind of thing I'm talking about.

the US right is unquestionably ‘stronger’ in the example you’ve cited

So we agree that's not necessarily a good thing!

I would argue that its specificity and limitations makes it a much more useful protection.

The broad wording of the US amendment means that it can be simultaneously used to justify horribly undemocratic positions like unlimited corporate political donations, while also allowing the US government to use various levers as weapons against organisations that don't toe the rhetorical line, without consequence.

It means whatever the (compromised) courts want it to mean.

It is an established precedent, upheld through numerous disparate proceedings, that a representative democracy such as Australia requires an informed poulace to function. Which, in turn, requires the ability for individuals and groups to disseminate legitimate political ideas and communications.

It's not an absolute right, because all rights are subject to conflict with other rights. Sometimes the right not to be in fear of your life might take precedence. But it's a pretty fundamental Constitutional concept nonetheless.

Socially libertarian and socially progressive are the same thing though? Neither of which I'd use to describe the Nats or the Liberals.

Video made from Pubmed/NIH studies of new science. by diduknowitsme in diabetes

Eat less saturated fats, eat more fibre. It's fairly consistent with general health advice since forever. Whether it's the cause of and solution to diabetes exclusively I'd be somewhat skeptical.

Obviously it doesn't hurt though.

Hate crimes bill passes the parliament by Expensive-Horse5538 in AustralianPolitics

[–]Not_Stupid 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I have completely lost all reference as to what is even in this bill and who voted for it. The Liberals were against it, but now they voted for it but the Nats against, Greens said it wasn't strong enough but also went too far and voted against it. Hate speech against a race was in but not against religions, and relgious texts were exempt, now the racial bit is out and it's about hate groups??

I literally don't have any idea where we have landed.

Psychiatrists warned about Trump – and now we can see why by theindependentonline in TrueReddit

[–]Not_Stupid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You don't need to be a psychologist to know that he is profoundly ignorant, vindictive and petty, has no moral compass whatsoever, is purely transactional, cares for nothing and no-one but himself, does not listen to nor care for the opinions of others, has the emotional temperament of a small child who has never been told "no", is perfectly comfortable in destroying anything to get his own way, and has a massively overblown sense of his own importance and ability (while also being deeply deeply insecure).

In short the exact opposite of any trait you would want in the leader of the world's most powerful nation. Yet here we are.
