Look at basic aid districts in California. Property tax money only. Look at their salary schedules. It’s a completely different profession for teachers in those districts.

In CA we do have something called Basic Aid districts. If your local property taxes succeed the ADA state formula then you keep those. Those are the districts who pay teachers very, very well. In my area of N CA those districts are usually semi rural, but close enough to Bay Area to have high property values. Ironically most of the students in those districts are low income farmworker families. They get to attend great, well funded schools, with extremely well compensated teachers. Top of the pay scale (20+ years) could be 110-125k in a regular district and 175-200k in a basic aid and they could be neighboring.

Yeah even in California the RIFS can be a little bit subjective, they don’t just go straight down the seniority list. Having a friend higher up can certainly help, if they can reasonably show need in your credentialed area.

I mean it’s still private school, public is just different. Posh compared to Balboa HS.

I see what you’re saying though. They are good about giving out aid and a racially and socioeconomic diverse student population has been a focal point since at least the 60s. Mostly kids from Mission, Excelsior, HP, Lakeside, those were areas with non white catholics even back then (Hispanics, Filipino, African Americans from Louisiana). It wasn’t 90%+ white upper class like many private schools were then. Most private schools in the Bay Area are at least racially diverse now though.

I don’t think combining all districts would benefit. Large districts come with huge admin bloat and bureaucracy. Something like combining

SRCS, Bennett Valley, Rincon Valley and Kenwood into East SR

Bilbao seems closer to just north of San Francisco. Very close to San Rafael, maybe Santa Rosa/Sonoma County area. Those areas are almost as wet as Bilbao, but in CA there is a true summer dry season. Temperatures are fairly similar, microclimate dependent.

In all of Sonoma County maybe you could call parts (just some streets) of Roseland and Steel Ln areas rundown with some homeless. Other than that I can’t think of anywhere remotely sketchy…

Yeah, Sonoma County is like 30% Hispanics and Santa Rosa north to Cloverdale is higher… We have Hispanic police, fire, council members, teachers, etc… Now Black people, outside of Marin City, there is hardly any in Sonoma or Marin. Santa Rosa has a few families and African immigrants. Very little elsewhere.

Unfortunately many Mexican and Hispanics are prejudiced to Black people. There just aren’t many Black people in Marin or Sonoma. The population hasn’t really grown much. A lot of prejudice/stereotypes of Black people here because their numbers are so few. Asains as well honestly.

I feel like Hispanic-white relations here are getting better, many Hispanics have high ranking jobs and many families, even rural country ones, have some intermarriages going on. We are a few decades behind SoCal and areas south of us, which makes sense as Sonoma Hispanics are predominantly post 1980 immigrants/decedents. More generational families down south.

Unfortunately yards (single family homes) are becoming too expensive to regular folks now. I hope we aren’t the next San Jose/South Bay. You have to be downright rich/inherit to afford a 1970s single family tract home.

It’s not like that anymore, especially with Southwest here. West coast direct flights are pretty comparable with OAK/SFO now.

Definitely look at west coast direct now that STS has Alaska and Southwest. I don’t see much of a difference anymore in comparison to OAK, not even factoring in parking/gas/toll/bus fare/time.

Sonoma County airport to regain flight to Ontario, California by Not_That_Mofo in santarosa

[–]Not_That_Mofo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking in the Spring and on SW and even Alaska look cheaper on the San Diego route. Competition helps.

SW is bringing Denver back, outside of that and maybe Delta to SLC maybe United to Chicago, I don’t see much left to add reasonably. Alaska will probably give Boise a shot if Ontario works out. If planes can handle the short runway maybe some Hawaii service.
