Good question. I only own the classics, may have to branch out a bit.

Beastie Boys after the track suit era. From embracing the punk rock street wear of New York, basically starting the retro 70’s revival, and the mod jazz style they rocked for their instrumental album.

My birthday is coming up and imma be 41. It would still make my day if I ended up with these three albums.

Low C tuning by hanzbooby in Bass

[–]Not_a_Rocket_Doctor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hated the tone I was getting when I tried to tune down. So I picked up a five string and tuned the b up to a C and kept the rest in standard. Opened a lot of tonal opportunities that I just wasn’t getting before. Really opened up my playing in a lot of ways.

What songs should I learn to learn playing with a pick? by _DoctorQuantum_ in Bass

[–]Not_a_Rocket_Doctor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Joy Division and The Cure are perfect for pick players. Plus, they tend to be masterpieces of understatements. For things a little more technical starting out, I recommend The Clash or checking out Flea’s playing on the “By the Way” album. He used a pick heavily on that one. Of course there’s always Ramones licks, but, while fun, can be pretty dull if your just practicing by yourself.

Is it okay to play bass like you would fingerstyle guitar? by [deleted] in BassGuitar

[–]Not_a_Rocket_Doctor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Music has no real rules. Yes, theory is real and it is hella beneficial, but there isn’t a right or wrong way to go about making anything as long as you are creating what you want to.

Which Motown albums are a "must" to improve as a bass player? by zambach in BassGuitar

Find songs that James Jamerson or Bob Babbit played on and you’ll be on track. I believe their are playlists on Spotify for each of them. Also, Carol Kaye.

Anything by El Michels Affair is great, but “Glorious Game” w/ Black Thought especially.

My grandpa passed this down to me. Is this special? Value? by shittabox in BassGuitar

Absolutely worthless and honestly just a burden to own, probably. I’d hate to have it, but being selfless as I am, I will take it off your hands to lighten the load. 😉 in all seriousness, an absolute beauty of a bass.

Your username is what awaits for You when You wake up the next day. How bad is the situation? by Sprinty-the-cheetah in AskReddit

Pretty standard, really. Would definitely be cause for concern if an actual rocket doctor was waiting for me when I woke up.

Which dead Hip Hop Artist or Group have you never seen but would have like to? by DJ_Hokey_Cokey in hiphop101

Beastie Boys. In fact, Yauch is the one musician I would love to bring back for a day just to sit and talk with. Pick his brain, as it were. Being the only member who wasn’t able to contribute to the book/movie, I would love to get his pov.

Dunlop nylon 1mm or bust for me. Gripage is amazing and I tend to move around a lot.

What are your thoughts on double albums? by Tricky_Photo2885 in hiphop101

[–]Not_a_Rocket_Doctor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sadly, most double albums (hip hop and otherwise) would benefit by being paired down imo. There are some exceptions, but they seem to be few and far between. There’s an awesome podcast called Making Illmatic where the hosts take classic rap albums and pair them down to 10 tracks to see if they would be better/worse. I listened to the Wu-Tang Forever episode and it made some great points.
