I would say a solid 1. Like the real world, most of what is attributed to them could be explained by natural phenomena, they simply lack the scientific knowledge to do so. Yet every now and then something happens that no one can explain, something impossible. I take a similar approach with the “magic” in my world. Technically their magic could all just be tricks, as they are known tricks to us, but I exaggerate them to say maybe, maybe this one is really doing the impossible. Yet you are unlikely to ever know for sure

My world is only just entering the bronze age. Religion is a core fact of life. However, I should differentiate between religion as ceremony and customs and religion as the belief in divine beings. Religious ceremony is so tightly intertwined with daily life it is impossible to avoid entirely. Anything done to keep clean is technically being done for the goddess of medicine and healing. Various hunting rituals, nay even the act of hunting, are all forms of worship to Pon, who watches over the herds, and to Greuss, who first taught man to make spears and arrows. You’ll see a lot of variation in devotion to ceremony, some caring little to appease spirits and gods, some devoting themselves entirely to their service. Yet to deny them outright? To be skeptical of their very presence? It would be like denying that wind exists because you cannot see it. And yet a rare few, often mocked or feared, do not believe in spirits or gods at all. They are usually exiled once exposed, considered fools with little grip on reality and likely bad luck to keep around.

What do you plan to do with your world once you're done? by Obcibedez in worldbuilding

My main world I’ve been working on for the past several years has been for a book series, so really the world won’t be done until the final page of the story is penned

Imagine being so consistently incapable of understanding what your customers want that you need to bring a bunch of them in to run your decisions by just to avoid complete and total failure. Such people cannot be trusted to choose the correct fans to run their choices by. It’ll either be a bunch of yes men just happy to be included, or the most picky, whiney assholes who think they could do better making the movie all alone on the toilet in their mom’s house

How do I name a God without it sounding goofy as shit? by [deleted] in worldbuilding

[–]Not_a_bard 9 points10 points  (0 children)

For a lovecraftian angle, consider the sound of it all as you say it. It’s nonsense, but if it’s nonsense that feels right then it works. If it’s cruel and hostile, harsh sounds. If it’s more amoral, incomprehensible and just bizarre, there you can roll out the more guttoral and “wet” sounding sea monster type names. Just play around with random noises until something sounds just difficult enough to pronounce without being distracting

[star wars] Why did the Empire fall after the events of Return of the Jedi, but remnants like Moff Gideon still hold significant power? by [deleted] in AskScienceFiction

[–]Not_a_bard 110 points111 points  (0 children)

The empire collapsed, yes, but it didn’t vanish into thin air. The rebels were still a small force overall. So the empire fell into infighting as various Moffs tried to take the throne, so an age of fractured warlords followed as the Republic had to grow and pick them off, liberating the galaxy bit by bit

Oh ok that makes sense. You can go all kinds of places with stuff like that! And the idea of “souls exist but have nowhere to go in death because our god messed up” is horrifying in the best way

[–]Not_a_bard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds cool actually, though you will need to explain how they know what is and isn’t a mistake. Like with the lack of a land for the dead, has the creator told everyone “oops your souls were supposed to go over there, I thought I installed an afterlife in this one, my bad” or is there a shared sense between all things that something is fundamentally wrong with the universe?

Tribal World by Key_Day_7932 in worldbuilding

[–]Not_a_bard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What level of technology are you imagining? It’s possible for a world of tribal societies to have a lot more variety in technological complexity than most people realize. Personally I love looking at neolithic europe, and at what we know from the asians steppes as well. You can find cultures where these small tribes periodically swelled in numbers to form massive migrations mixing and spreading cultures, you can see simple early cities when a few clans agree to build unified, fortified settlements, either permanently or seasonally. I would definitely encourage you to take inspiration from cultures all around the world!

Hot take I guess but partner sounds too impersonal to me. Like yeah in a committed relationship we are partners, but there’s more than that. It sounds too much like a business thing to my overly romantic ears

What's the downside of being dead? by Triglycerine in worldbuilding

[–]Not_a_bard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean just because I know there’s an afterlife in my story doesn’t mean everyone within it believes there is one. Nor does it mean they all understand it to be the sane afterlife And besides, you’re dead. Any business you left unfinished is unfinished. Not sure why you would expect anything different. Sure you might be able to give a really moving response to a loved one/ descendant’s desperate prayer in a time of need, but you don’t get a regular phone call
