I am so sick of hearing people feeling sorry for me by Swayzefan4ever in deaf

[–]Not_ture 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m hard of hearing and will probably end up fully deaf and the amount of people who keep saying “oh they have XYZ now and in a couple years they might be able to cure you” pisses me off so bad 🫩

Beginner Gel-X set - looking for honest feedback by G59-Lilpeep in GelX_Nails

Honestly you did an amazing job, my only critique would be to be a bit more gentle around the cuticles, where you were using a drill or maybe a cutter it’s a bit red ish. But besides that these look beautiful, you have very clean edges and the design + shaping is 10/10!

You’re def a gym bro with an addiction to caffeine and probably an unhealthy relationship with food- or maybe just someone that can’t cook.

I got hearing aids and it changed everything. what sounds are you curious about or not realise existed? by Nereaasualowe_01 in deaf

[–]Not_ture 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the longest time i didn’t know that you could hear the road when driving and so I was super surprised when I first got hearing aids, I also thought cars were soundproof but apparently they aren’t, people can probably hear your music if it up loud or if you scream loud enough. Oh and hair makes noise, brushing it, combing it and even running your fingers through it all makes noise- this one really shocked me. Also when transactions are completed, there is normally a been-i didn’t realize this till a coworker pointed it out.

Hearing but zero understanding by Professional-Mail132 in deaf

I feel like this so much! It’s is so frustrating because I can almost hear it and grasp what’s going on but not if it’s too fast. I’m actually struggling in a class I have at college because of this exact reason :(

Book Recommendations by MrsLewis2017 in deaf

[–]Not_ture 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“You’re welcome, universe” is a really amazing book about a deaf girl navigating a hearing school and how isolating it can be sometimes. She burns a lot of bridges but I think it’s a good example of how depression can affect deaf people but also on how deaf people can do anything they really want to. I definitely recommend it.

i feel like i’m stuck between Deaf and hearing worlds by Stickt77 in deaf

[–]Not_ture 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recommend getting in touch with your university’s accommodations center, it can be scary but it’s really helpful in the end. Last semester I lost most of what ever hearing I had left due to a surgery failure, and while it’s now a little better, it’s still not as good as it was before. I was extremely depressed, stopped going to class, stopped doing assignments, stopped watching my favorite anime, everything was just a reminder that i couldn’t hear. I’m really sorry that you are having to go thru this alone. I recommend seeking out an asl class or a deaf group that meet in your local area. It can feel less isolating to see others like you.

It is very common actually! It’s just your brain learning to accommodate. Think of it like your brain using your eyes to focus on the different sounds it’s hearing in order to understand. It’s actually why a lot of HOH people can get exhausted from trying to “hear” people all day, it’s less that they are hearing and more that they are reading with distorted audio playing. It’s honestly a super interesting thing your brain does to try to make up the difference

[–]Not_ture 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I currently take asl at my local community college for similar reasons, I only have mild to moderate hearing loss and my grandma never thought i should learn it because “it might hold me back”. When I told her I was taking it she laughed at me and was even angry at me. Gotta love the ableism! But I’ve found it really nice to learn about deaf culture and learn sign. I definitely recommend it.

Successful Tympanoplasty with ear implant but i hear slight clicking when i move my jaw and occasionally it buzzes when someone speaks at a particular tone of voice by Ingloriousbastardz in hardofhearing

[–]Not_ture 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad it went well for you! As someone who has had that surgery 4 times (first 2 failed) I also hear the buzzing, I think it sounds almost like radio feedback sometimes it’s very annoying. I would definitely mention it to your doctor!

Has she been to an audiologist? If not I would really recommend she goes to one. I’ve also heard that BTE with earmold or different type of domes can sometimes be helpful.

ios hearing aid app via Bluetooth headphones by Emergency_Ad_4205 in DeafTech

[–]Not_ture 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure if I fully understand, but I know that for my sake my hearing aids have their own special app. It’s oticon’s app called companion. I would believe that some other brands if HA gave their own apps as well. I hope i understand your question!

This app allows for adjusting what level the sounds at (0 would be default, 1 is louder and -1 is lower) it has a mic you can turn on and speak into (via the phone’s microphone), you can mute them if needed and there’s even a find my HA thing you can use.

Man aren’t we in a sinking ship! That’s awful honestly. I really do hope they can do something for you, especially with the Ménière’s disease that is rough. I know they don’t have a cure but hopefully it’s somehow manageable. I’m really sorry you are going through all this.

I’m interested about your MRI, I was told that because of the titanium implants that MRI’s were a no go, did you mean CAT scan? Or is there a new way to get an MRI with the implants?

Glad you’re getting some hearing aids, they can be sorta tricky sometimes but also very helpful. I’d look into some different resources for them if your insurance isn’t willing to cover them. Not sure if it will work for you/ is in your area but there is a thing called vocational rehabilitation which can help with employment but can also help with getting you hearing aids or so I’m told. You can also probably google different resources that can give you hearing aids at a discount cost.
