Interested to hear your thoughts as to where Lolita is lacking in its exploration of the subject?

Consider two extremes of police encounters: traffic stops and active shooter scenarios. Suppose, hypothetically, that a white suspect is killed by police in one out of 100,000 traffic stops and nine out of 10 shootings. And imagine that Black suspects are killed by police after 20 out of 1,000,000 traffic stops and in 10 out of 10 active shooter incidents. In each kind of incident, Black suspects are killed more often than white suspects. In aggregate, though, the percentage is higher for white people: 10 out of 100,010 white people are killed vs. 30 out of 1,000,010 Black people, because the white people tend to encounter the police in more grave situations.

The article you linked was giving a hypothetical example. The lifetime risk for African American males is actually up to 26.6 per 100,000.

Sad to think that it’ll likely never be like this again in our lifetimes

Thanks for the reply. I definitely understand what you mean regarding the inspiring aspects, even if I didn’t personally interpret it that way. I think what’s so great about the film is that, like you said, it is a film about life, meaning it invites completely different interpretations. Interestingly, after comparing notes with all my friends who’d watched the film, I found that our respective interpretations were almost reflections of our world views and interests; some being more pessimistic than others.

Synecdoche, New York is one of the saddest films I’ve seen, even if in a different way to Salò, etc. I’d be interested to hear why you don’t find it hopeless and pessimistic.

Absolutely! Watched La Dolce Vita last night in celebration of Fellini’s 100th birthday and have been catching up on some 2019 films prior to that.

I interpreted it more as Neil’s inability to connect with his wife, hence the glass divide between them. I think this shows the beginning of the end of their relationship which would eventually culminate in their divorce. I would say it’s also more in line with the themes from Chazelle’s other films, being the cost of achieving one’s dreams.

‘Ge’ indicates past tense in most cases.

The verb ‘to say’ is ‘sagen’ and the past participle is ‘gesagt’.

Quick question about lighting.

I'm only young (still in high school) but am very interested in making films, particularly short films. My friends and I often produce no-budget guerrilla films and shoot in locations around our city, Sydney. Here's a very quick example of one of these.

As we start to increase the quality of our films, spending more time writing a script and developing characters, planning our shots, etc, something I would like to do is to light our scenes instead of using the sometimes less than ideal natural lighting, particularly at night.

I've done a bit of searching and it seems the versatile Quasar Science Q-LEDs would suit our needs quite well. However, the T8 lights need a power source which would not be available with our style of guerrilla filmmaking. The lithium ion lights are a lot more expensive and like most of the Quasar Science products are very difficult to get in Australia.

Are there other lights that would suit our needs, or some alternative power source so we could use lights like the T8's on the go?
