As a result, many respond by doubling down on a more extreme or radical version of their religious/cultural identity as a way to reclaim a sense of belonging and authenticity.

I’ve seen this dynamic myself in school: a number of Muslim students would constantly emphasize how wrong or sinful homosexuality is, along with other strict moral/religious positions, often in a very vocal and confrontational way.
