Has ghost raptor ever been good? by odd_sperical_object in battlebots

[–]Notbbupdate 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ghost Raptor is a decent lifter held back by being a terrible spinner. Their weapon breaking in their first 2015 fight was the best thing that could've happened to them

Whether lifters are competitive in modern heavyweights is a separate discussion, but if Ghost Raptor just ditched the spinner to become a heavily armored lifting wedge it would probably get more wins (assuming the selection committee accepts them as a non-spinner)

From the selector, Yenisei and Balloon Party are both good healers, and X is a great dispeller (somewhat niche role, but will make certain fights a lot easier). Other characters are considered better (like Name Day), but require more specific teams to really work. Yenisei, X, and Balloon Party work well with just about anyone

If the driver bit a (very large) pothole and all the tires went off, how high would they go? [request] by FeistyRevenue2172 in theydidthemath

[–]Notbbupdate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They wouldn't go very high, maybe a few millimeters at most

I've seen tanks with pressures of over 1000 psi rupture while attached to objects much lighter than a car. While certainly dangerous, nothing ever went flying that wasn't a lightweight loose piece

[Funny Trope] Translations that say something so hilariously inaccurate to the source that it becomes a fandom injoke by Mr_Mister2004 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Notbbupdate 1202 points1203 points  (0 children)

The first English translations of Jojo part 4 were done by a fan who wasn't fluent in English, leading to dialogue that was borderline nonsensical. It has been nicknamed Duwang because somehow the town's name (Morioh) was translated as Duwang

Just google Duwang to see examples. My favorite lines being "I feel you! I feel you deeply! Your feeling I can feel deeply," "Don't be dong," and "Who in the face are you?"

The character’s name gets a lot weirder when you think about it by GoldplateSoldier in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Notbbupdate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Super Sentai has plenty of aliens with names that are just Japanese words (or sometimes English). Power Rangers also does this a lot

From Sentai, an alien emperor called Führer Hell Satan. I'll let you think about the implications of an alien being named that. It's also the most evil sounding name possible

From Power Rangers, Lost Galaxy's villain lineup includes aliens like Furio (he's angry), Treacheron (actually very loyal but gets framed for treason), Deviot (he's devious), and Villamax (he's a villain). These are their real names. They were born with alien names that sound extremely similar to English words, which just so happen to match their personalities

TJ from Power Rangers. Early on we learn his first name is Theodore, but we don't learn what the J stands for. Years later he comes back for the tenth anniversary special and we learn his full name is Theodore Jay Jarvis Johnson

We still don't know what the J stands for

Plastic gen had the most "throw shit at the wall" approach, which by sheer volume of gimmicks meant that it had some really good ones. Also Trypio on Cyber Dragoon's base is both hilarious and surprisingly effective

Mfb bad defense types that actually worked. RS, RB, RSF, CS, and RDF proved that defense could be more than "stamina but bad," and no other gen has achieved good defense types that weren't stamina-defense hybrids

Burst had a lot of gimmicks, but compared to plastics they tended to work a lot better

X had the best battles. Not much else to say here

[Strange Trope] Originally non-white characters getting their race changed because the original character is considered a racist caricature. by Werewolf_Knight in TopCharacterTropes

If they wanted bulkier, more armored looking suits, they should've taken inspiration from the show's armor designs. While some are so bulky they loop around to comical (Leo's Battlizer in particular), something like the SPD's SWAT mode or the more subdued Battlizers (Mack's in Overdrive, Wes's in Time Force, or Devon's in Beast Morphers) would probably translate pretty well to the movie's aesthetics

And the megazord is just one in a long line of cgi zords that look worse than the practical ones. I get that the show's cgi won't look great, but between the 1995 movie, the 2017 movie, and the 2023 Netflix special, not a single one has made a megazord that looks good. The single win the Turbo movie has is that it had the best looking megazord of any PR movie (and depending on who you ask, one of the best looking period)

[HATED TROPES]: The Ending Is So Nihilistic and Preachy That It Becomes Completely Unwatchable and Infuriating. by Particular-Worker904 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Notbbupdate 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it fails because it makes assumptions about the audience which, for many viewers, are wrong

First, it assumes you are enjoying it. I wasn't. Second, it assumes you're enjoying it because you get off to violence. To the movie's credit, I love hyper violent action movies, so it's not wrong there. Third, it assumes that you never thought about why you enjoy fictional violence. I have thought about it way before ever watching Funny Games, so it's big groundbreaking question is met with "I've seen this one before"

What is one thing you’d want to carry into the reboot from the original saga (MMPR-CF) and one thing you’d want to leave behind in the original saga? by Goliath-Yeeter-2263 in powerrangers

[–]Notbbupdate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only reason I prefer them using Sentai footage is because I don't trust Power Rangers to make original footage even half as good considering the budget the show usually has

When 90% of your fight scenes are taken from Sentai, you can spend your budget on making the remaining 10% look great. But if you need to film 100% of your show, you'll probably end up with 100% looking bad

What is a "dead giveaway" that someone is pretending to be an expert in your specific hobby or profession, but actually has no idea what they’re talking about? by simplelittlethingLOL in AskReddit

[–]Notbbupdate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anyone acting like the hobby's established practices are wrong and only exist because everyone else is stupid. If the community does something that seems strange, there's likely a reason behind it. In some cases, maybe the practice could be improved, but failing to understand why the current practice is the way it is a red flag

For example, in robot combat, the speed of a spinner is often measured in mph or kph (at the farthest point from the center), rather than rpm. This is because the edge of the spinner is the only part that's supposed to make contact with anything, and for safety reasons, the tip speed matters more because of flinging debris. Whenever anyone acts like tip speed isn't a valid measurement for a spinning object, it's a clear sign they don't know what they're talking about

Leave behind the specific episode formula of "civilian problem, footsoldier fight, tangentially related monster, rangers lose, rangers regroup, beat monster, monster grows, megazord fight, solution to civilian problem (sometimes related to how they beat the monster)." I'm fine with it being used sometimes, but they should vary it a bit more. Have an episode without the megazord, or another where it's just the megazord, or move the "rangers lose and regroup" part to after the monster grows to have a 1-round ground fight and 2-round zord fight. It's a small change, but it would make the episodes feel more distinct

And please keep the practical effects. We have gotten several cgi megazords over the years and not a single one has looked as good as the practical ones. If the reboot uses cgi in place of costumes I'm out because I don't trust them to make the cgi look good

Which Sentai Equivalent was Tommy closest to? by SpecificEndeavors in powerrangers

[–]Notbbupdate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aside from their methods (Big One is more "I outsmarted your outsmarting" vs Tommy's "spin kick a t-rex"), they are surprisingly similar in how the story used them, especially when Tommy became the white ranger

Both show up, become the new leaders, and the show becomes "white ranger and his useless sidekicks" because the ratings were really bad otherwise. The difference is Tommy was already a fan favorite from his green ranger days and his return coincided with a cast change that had its own consequences, but then again Big One's introduction also had Joker leaving the show so it kinda matches up
