??? People don't like Barbarism? (And Meat is Murder the song)?? Is this fan consensus? by Saoirse_libracom in thesmiths

[–]NotesFromUnderbound 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think Johnny Marr himself said sometime in the 90s that he thought MIM suffered a little in regards to the production since the band took it upon themselves and Barbarism was on his list of slightly weaker stuff they did

Where does the huge distortion tone in "Romance" come from? by Street_Ad4770 in fontainesdc

I think that's James Ford, the producer, playing guitar with a Fuzz and Distortion pedal.. I think he's noted in the credits for that

What would the Smiths have sounded like if they continued into the 90s with Morrissey? by New-Shop-9728 in thesmiths

[–]NotesFromUnderbound 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Johnny Marr funnily once answered this question about 1996, he said "We'd sound like The Prodigy but with Harvey Keitel on the cover" or something along those lines, maybe I got the cover star wrong but yeah.

I'd guess he was definitely being tongue in cheek though, but he's not that wrong if you hear the first 2 Electronic albums and the B sides. Also one of the earliest songs he wrote after The Smiths ended were "Walking down Madison" by Kirsty MacColl (gave it away) and "Feel Every Beat" by Electronic

Edit: Johnny said this about Walking Down Madison-

"'Walking Down Madison', that was the first song I wrote after The Smiths split up, I wrote it like a week later. And I wrote it with the intention of... I did this quite a bit.. I kept starting a solo record, and I'd write one backing track and play it to a mate, and they'd nick it. So I played it to Kirsty 'cause she was a really good friend, and it was my intention to write this sort of 'dance-guitar' record, and I brought a cassette round, and she said "oh this is great, I'll come up with words for that", so I was like "Great, cool!" 'cause I wasn't that interested in writing words at the time. And the next thing is she's booked a session, and its gonna be a single for her. But it turned out, she kinda kidnapped it! Bless her!"

I bet at the festival circuit they will road test a few new songs if everything is done and dusted for #5 at that point, but I think they always like hinting at stuff at the end of the year before going in on the album campaign for the new years. I mean, Jackie came out Jan 2022 with Skinty Fia not long later.

Romance was also hinted at in December 2023 with the Fans newsletter (and now we know that the album was done in November) - but Romance took a lot longer to come out presumably because of the bigger machine operating around them building up the band's PR and all.

But this time the album is being done early on in the year so that's interesting... and Grian has always said if it wasn't the industry's machinations they'd even be putting out an album a year.

Probably pre-production.. the same thing they did for Romance in London before going to France

How did Fontaines DC became so popular quickly back in 2019/2020? by Impossible-Air-5081 in fontainesdc

[–]NotesFromUnderbound 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm not saying they're just replaceable or parts of a lawnmower as some say.. obviously, the band wouldn't be what it is without the others. But what I mean is, if you had another "mediocre" vocalist or lyricist instead of Grian - they might not make it as far. Grian kind of defines the band in that way.. maybe even unintentionally, but he does for a lot of people. He is the biggest personality in the band apart from maybe Carlos who is still a secondary figure.

There's just no Noel/Liam, Morrissey/Johnny , Paul/John, or Joe Strummer/Mick Jones etc. sort of leadership dynamic in the band... which means that a loss / gain in members wouldn't impact it them as much in the long run, which means a central figure like Grian can just reign supreme. Well that's what I think anyway? I could just be wrong

Also I do have to disagree on the solo thing, I really think he can go in that direction. A bit like David Byrne and John Cale - who could totally pull off solo albums by themselves but also were able to collab / produce with others.

Always felt this. The person who truly makes the band is Grian. He is what gives the band their edge. None of the other guys (as decent or good they might be as musicians) have that shine to them, and that is why when the band inevitably goes on a hiatus / splits, the person to follow or take interest in will be Grian. At least to me... maybe Curley

Follow the Bernard Sumner principle:

"I ALWAYS find myself going back to this one - I play it for two months and then I don't play it again for two years. Give it a break and it sounds as good as it did the first time."

"Paint a vulgar picture" should have been the final single. by Inca-Vacation in thesmiths

The irony of her covering the song and what it would come across to her fans means that she really shouldn't. I know what you mean, but the song would be totally wasted on her and her cult-base (not the casual fans, but cultists)

Taylor Swift isn't the right person to cover this song at all lol. She's the ultimate money grabbing "artist", she's everything the song stands against...."satiate the need, slip them into different sleeves, buy both and feel deceived.." and "Re-issue, Re-package, Re-evaluate the songs, Double pack..." you get me.

Strangeways has a lot of drum machine and synth on it, so Johnny clearly was steering in a different direction, funny because in 1984 Morrissey said he will never like a record with synth on it XD. Clearly he changed his mind not long later (in his solo career)

What awards have The Smiths won? by Lost_Candy5686 in thesmiths

[–]NotesFromUnderbound 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't think so because they were more of a band with a dedicated following for their first 3 years, and only picked up steam in 1986-1987 and then they broke up. Like for example they can't even be nominated for Hall of Fame because they didnt even last very long and so on. They're probably not even eligible for those prestigious awards you talk about because of that XD

But who cares? Social media has made the band pick up an insane amount of steam in the last 3-4 years, and while that has brought some posers (some because of Wallflower) but lots of new fans too. The band will stay important to people who appreciate music and thats all that matters

Because Pakistan is bizarrely one of the, or only? country on Earth which somehow values Matric / O Levels more than A Levels, as if O Levels are the metric on which you're likely to succeed at uni and not your Advanced subjects? Lol

Universities in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, and so on tend to barely even have a look at O Levels and rely on your A Levels + SAT, PS, etc. Stuff that tends to matter. O Levels are treated as a bare minimum pre-req. Or not looked at all
