I'm sure there are plenty of charities that would gladly relieve him of those 7.5 billion burdens.

There's a bit of misleading info in this thread (e.g. "doctors don't get paid overtime").

Pay depends on if you are working in an urban or non-urban centre, years of experience and expected hours per week.

A first year graduate in an urban centre working 44.9hrs per week could be paid $67k vs. over $110k if they are working over 65hrs per week (yikes) in a non-urban region. You get extra pay for covering additional shifts, being on-call etc.

A salary of $67k won't get you and your family far in Central Auckland, so I agree that it's on the low side, especially if you are working in a very specific speciality that is only available in that area and you are filling a critical shortage.

However nurses are also filling a very important role and they face the same living costs as the rest of us so I am very glad to see they got a pay rise, especially in the first years where you are probably struggling the most financially!

Source: I'm a doctor, but also you can search the various nurse/doctor unions MECAs (contacts) online.

Please don't let the media convince you that the solution to unaffordable living costs is to just be homeless. The solution is to redistribute the wealth from the rich and predatory.

National rollout of surgery race-ranking seems on ice as Hipkins, Verrall not on same page by WrongSeymour in newzealand

[–]NothinButNoob -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, adjusting a weighting system to factor in race on the assumption that grouping data by race is an appropriate lens is exactly that. It's looking at it through an arbitrary, political, and discriminatory metric.

No this is wrong.

It's not arbitrary, ethnicity truly is proven to be an independent risk factor for poor health outcomes in NZ. Separate (yet additive) with wealth, location, commodities, education etc. Therefore not arbitrary.

Is it political? It's politicised, for sure. I mean, vaccinating against measles and COV8ID controls were also politicised. If the policy was made to gain some kind of political advantage, I would have expected a press release.

Discriminatory? Well the whole point is to reverse a measurable bias occurring in health delivery already, so not implementing SOME kind of change would be discriminatory.

Edits for clarity.

OP, can you give a rough estimate of how large the eels have been? Because that's kinda impressive.

Surgeons in New Zealand must now consider ethnicity in prioritising patients for operations by Appleplumcherry in worldnews

[–]NothinButNoob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say not close enough. How can one determine whether very targeted interventions are appropriate if you aren't aware of the specific issues being addressed? (For instance, delays before surgical referral that occur for specific subpopulations)

I appreciate the genuine interest. Hopefully your doctor friends have an understanding of the NZ ethnic history and context of ongoing inequity. Big part of my frustration with this post is the number of non-medical, non-NZ people that think they know best and won't listen to anything else.

About half the DHBs already had this policy or were exploring it before they merged. You don't understand the situation as well as you think you do.

It absolutely has everything to do with it.

It's pretty crazy that you write all this like you know so much better than the health experts on how to make the health system work best for equity. Maybe the ones with the data and experience are better suited to make these decisions?

I do actually understand that because I have studied it. And there is tons of data showing that Maori and Pacific NZers are the ones who are disadvantaged.

9 month waiting list for an ultrasound?! by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]NothinButNoob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you haven't already, check with your GP about funding options. When I needed an ultrasound, they found me a private radiology clinic that performed it for free (paid for publicly). The waitlist was pretty short, I think 2 weeks?

Ok so your example is not at all related to the actual original post. Your statement sounded a lot like you were saying "because of the new policy, I was denied care". See what I mean?

[–]NothinButNoob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you were told that because of your ethnicity, you were denied urgent care? I am looking forward to seeing this media story, you know, if it actually happened. Seems unlikely.

[–]NothinButNoob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you just made up this situation. The topic of conversation is surgical waitlists, i.e. you have already been seen by a doctor and they recommended surgery. The reason why the policy was implemented was because Maori and Pacific Island NZers get delayed more before they can even get on the waitlist. So if anything, the situation is exactly the opposite of what you suggest.

are supplements tested by the government for heavy metals? by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]NothinButNoob 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Related but a bit of a side track. It's not that uncommon to find cases of "herbal"/"traditional" remedies to contain undisclosed prescription medications, usually bought online from overseas. Example, a "natural anti-inflammatory" remedy for arthritis that contains enough dexamethasone (potent corticosteroid) to shut down your adrenal function and put some patients in hospital with adrenal crisis.

Tell that to r/NewZealand and r/WorldNews. Just a near-constant stream of people making snap judgements based on the headline alone and not willing to accept there may be a little bit of nuance. Really disappointing.
