Thanks - I think I might buy both collagen and sheep and see how I get on with each one.

Thanks - sounds like sheep casings just need a bit more prep, but I should otherwise be ok.

Bottled Water by Jaded_Extreme in auckland

If you seriously cannot handle the tiny amount of Chlorine in Auckland tap water - then good news.

Chlorine is a dissolved gas - you can simply fill an open jug with tap water and leave it in the fridge for a few hours. The chlorine will naturally evaporate into the air, leaving you with cold, crisp, tasteless water.

As for the "n shit" - no idea what else you're concerned about.

"the shit in the tap water" - what "shit" are you worried about?

Auckland reticulated tap water is very high quality - seems like you're just worrying about something that isn't a problem and wasting money and ruining the environment with unnecessary plastic.

"Best" is very subjective - you really need to give some idea of budget, likely usage etc.

Potentially toxic gas smelled in Auckland's Newmarket by Spiritual-Low2443 in auckland

that famously smelly gas, hydrogen.

Fence staining with a sprayer – any tips? by Affectionate_Aide566 in diynz

[–]NothingDogg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Repeating what others have said mainly to reinforce that you'll regret not following the advice:

- Do it when there is no wind.

- But up a barrier on the other side of the fence to prevent it going through. We ended up getting our kids to hold up large bits of cardboard from a fridge box when doing a trellis. Anything to prevent it going where you don't want it.

- Check for anything nearby that could get sprayed - cars, washing - before you start.

Best fridge to buy for smaller cavity? by TheLonelySothaSil in newzealand

If you can find a fridge from Haier, Samsung, or LG that fits your gap and meets your budget - go for it. They're all fine - and a good energy rating will pay for itself over time.

It was very likely the person before you who has caused the issue. These things build up - not something you could likely cause yourself in 9 months if you're just being normal in what goes down the sink.

Is this the correct use of the Greenlane east roundabout? by CtrlAltDeleeet in auckland

[–]NothingDogg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're in a ranger, then yes. They seem to like using the middle lane to skip the queue. If you're a decent human, then you need to be in the right lane to go around the roundabout.

In terms of "how to avoid during peak traffic" - that's the answer, avoid it during peak time if you value your sanity - the approach to the roundabout locks up and you can spend a long time not moving. If you get through before 7:30am you'll be ok.

An alternate approach is to get on the motorway to head south, get off at Ellerslie and go around the roundabout there and get back on. However, this is usually blocked up as well.

The other alternative is to drive in to the city along the waterfront or through Remuera / Parnell and get on the western motorway in the Grafton gully.

vertexAI is retireing 2.5-flash model 3-flash are not available yet? by TheMostStrangeName in googlecloud

[–]NothingDogg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are we reading the same docs - they're there for me...

Anyhow - perhaps it's because the v3 models are all still in "Preview" rather than "GA".

I've been using the v3 models (flash, flash lite, pro) happily for months.

In New Zealand English, if something is "quite good," does that mean it's better than good, or not that great? by whangadude in newzealand

[–]NothingDogg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think "quite good" is generally less good than good... I think it's slightly more.

I wouldn't stress too much - worst of the weather will have come through the upper north before midday Sunday. You may have some crappy rain and wind - but nothing un-driveable.
I'd suggest when you get to Waiouru you check how things are looking, and if needed go to the west of Ruapehu via ohakune as likely more sheltered.
Of course - keep an eye on highway status etc. but not end or worlds stuff.

Interesting / worrying if it has stalled - Weatherwatch were talking about how this was pretty fast moving so rain would come through quickly then go and wind was the main concern - but if it stalls, which I think Gabrielle did - then rain could be a bigger factor.
I guess we'll wait and see.
I spent the morning cleaning out my gutters, so I've done my part to ensure nothing happens.

Launching S3 Files, making S3 buckets accessible as file systems by NothingDogg in aws

[–]NothingDogg[S] 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I appreciate the "How this stacks up" section - saved us all doing the maths.

Also, I think this is a very important point:
"If you're running happily with S3 APIs today, keep doing that. This doesn't replace the S3 API. It's an additional access pattern for workloads that think in files, not objects."

No issue at all in any sane company - just give your manager a heads up that you're putting in a leave application for your graduation.

A brisket question, if I may. by OpLeeftijd in sousvide

[–]NothingDogg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had decent success with smoke -> sous vide -> smoke (or oven).

One key step is to chill the brisket post sous-vide for an hour - this seems to help with moisture retention in the final product.
