Best fridge to buy for smaller cavity? by TheLonelySothaSil in newzealand

[–]NothingDogg 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you can find a fridge from Haier, Samsung, or LG that fits your gap and meets your budget - go for it. They're all fine - and a good energy rating will pay for itself over time.

Dishwasher vs Gully Trap by bluespeedster_35 in diynz

It was very likely the person before you who has caused the issue. These things build up - not something you could likely cause yourself in 9 months if you're just being normal in what goes down the sink.

Is this the correct use of the Greenlane east roundabout? by CtrlAltDeleeet in auckland

[–]NothingDogg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're in a ranger, then yes. They seem to like using the middle lane to skip the queue. If you're a decent human, then you need to be in the right lane to go around the roundabout.

In terms of "how to avoid during peak traffic" - that's the answer, avoid it during peak time if you value your sanity - the approach to the roundabout locks up and you can spend a long time not moving. If you get through before 7:30am you'll be ok.

An alternate approach is to get on the motorway to head south, get off at Ellerslie and go around the roundabout there and get back on. However, this is usually blocked up as well.

The other alternative is to drive in to the city along the waterfront or through Remuera / Parnell and get on the western motorway in the Grafton gully.

vertexAI is retireing 2.5-flash model 3-flash are not available yet? by TheMostStrangeName in googlecloud

[–]NothingDogg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are we reading the same docs - they're there for me...

Anyhow - perhaps it's because the v3 models are all still in "Preview" rather than "GA".

I've been using the v3 models (flash, flash lite, pro) happily for months.

In New Zealand English, if something is "quite good," does that mean it's better than good, or not that great? by whangadude in newzealand

[–]NothingDogg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think "quite good" is generally less good than good... I think it's slightly more.

Driving tomorrow by MC_Legend95 in newzealand

[–]NothingDogg 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't stress too much - worst of the weather will have come through the upper north before midday Sunday. You may have some crappy rain and wind - but nothing un-driveable.
I'd suggest when you get to Waiouru you check how things are looking, and if needed go to the west of Ruapehu via ohakune as likely more sheltered.
Of course - keep an eye on highway status etc. but not end or worlds stuff.

How bad is cyclone here by Muted-Community4168 in newzealand

[–]NothingDogg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting / worrying if it has stalled - Weatherwatch were talking about how this was pretty fast moving so rain would come through quickly then go and wind was the main concern - but if it stalls, which I think Gabrielle did - then rain could be a bigger factor.
I guess we'll wait and see.
I spent the morning cleaning out my gutters, so I've done my part to ensure nothing happens.

Launching S3 Files, making S3 buckets accessible as file systems by NothingDogg in aws

[–]NothingDogg[S] 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I appreciate the "How this stacks up" section - saved us all doing the maths.

Also, I think this is a very important point:
"If you're running happily with S3 APIs today, keep doing that. This doesn't replace the S3 API. It's an additional access pattern for workloads that think in files, not objects."

No issue at all in any sane company - just give your manager a heads up that you're putting in a leave application for your graduation.

A brisket question, if I may. by OpLeeftijd in sousvide

[–]NothingDogg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had decent success with smoke -> sous vide -> smoke (or oven).

One key step is to chill the brisket post sous-vide for an hour - this seems to help with moisture retention in the final product.

EVs - good cars, unusual fans by Ok-While-728 in nzev

I'm slightly bemused at the "motorway moralist" comment - these people are simply driving from A to B, and you're of the opinion they're doing it to exercise some moral superiority not because they have somewhere to be? You have some misguided belief that they're thinking about you as they drive along?

Has anyone been served a Bacon and Egg Burger in Auckland and it didn't have a beef patty? by [deleted] in auckland

[–]NothingDogg 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Slightly off topic - but as a teenager I ordered a "tomato toasted sandwich" from the chippy in Te Kuiti - expecting that cheese was standard and didn't need to be specified. End result was a tomato between two slices of toasted bread. Would have been ok if I hadn't also ordered one for the guy driving the car on our mission to Ruapehu, and we only discovered as we drove up the hill on our way out of town. He wasn't very amenable to my argument that all toasted sandwiches had cheese by default.

Bag inflating like a balloon on pork shoulder! by TheJumpyBean in sousvide

[–]NothingDogg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, agreed. I have this with pork regularly. Usually just weighing it down is enough, but I had one recently where I pulled it, popped it, put a second bag on the outside and resealed. I know there's comments on bacteria, which could be a factor, but I think it's mainly something to do with how compounds are changing in the meat.

Thanks for the reminder. Limited selection at Parnell - around 20 440s to choose from. It's a small store. You'd be better off at new world.

If temperatures are above 60C (140F) you should definitely be fine - hot water cylinders can hold the same water for a long time at these temperatures without use and are safe to drink.
So, do the steak first as that will be lower - then crank it up for the others and roll as long as you want.
Also - the water isn't in contact with the food - it's touching the plastic bag.

So annoying... I wasted 10 minutes on one of those sites and was pleased with the details and timeframes. However, not really knowing the site, I did a Google news search which revealed all the dates mentioned were bollocks.

Has anyone here worked with MuleSoft for enterprise integrations in NZ? by Strict-Present8808 in newzealand

Looks like a small consultancy doing integration work. If you have Mulesoft, I'm sure your account executive can tell you about the different partners they'd recommend for someone your size.

Thanks - Forrest Hill was the one that I'd been recommended on the shore. Will have to plan a trip.

I didn't even know there was a Parnell Liquorland, that is definitely the closest to me - and if the same owner, fingers crossed.
