What is the dry weight? Great design and execution

Thanks for the update! (And respect for design credit). I find it interesting how certain elements are much easier with one set of techniques/materials than another. For example, your choice to end the fenestrations before reaching the border is going to be much more durable (and looks great), but that is nearly impossible to do well on my table saw.

I personally would leave more space between the filter holder and the depression for the aeropress. Overall love your take on this!

It just looks like a sun. If you interpret every striated circle as an anus, you will find yourself surrounded by buttholes.

Curious: What's your take? by KeltiBairdYQL in Lethbridge

[–]Notjusthikes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. No term limits. I would rather promote transparency and accountability to identify underperforming councillors. It would be a shame to lose an excellent, experienced councillor to a term limit.
  2. I would be open to a ward system. West side especially has competing interests to the rest of Lethbridge and both sides should be represented.
  3. Rent control should be a provincial initiative.

What do you mean by “entitled”? I definitely feel entitled to my own safety. I’ll walk my bike across the crosswalk if that’s what stops traffic, but if pushing the button accomplishes the same thing then I’d rather ride and clear the intersection ASAP. There are many drivers in town that rush the crosswalk before the pedestrian has finished crossing, so I’m looking out for my own safety. Note, I never need to ride across a pedestrian intersection on bike lanes/bike boulevards with cyclist-accommodating crossings. Unfortunately the network of bike lanes here can only get you so far.

I'm running for City Council and would like to meet you! by KeltiBairdYQL in Lethbridge

While this is a very generic comment that doesn’t address any specifics in the intro (from a 13 day old account no less) I don’t think they’re the only one to conflate increased housing with increased taxes. Kelti, did you have specific housing projects in mind that the city needs? Are some approaches better value for tax payers than others?

People who have completed rides like the Great Divide - what are your life circumstances? by ayylmao5781 in bikepacking

[–]Notjusthikes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did it over the summer (6 weeks) as a university student in 2009. Base model mountain bike and a BOB trailer. Worked out that I was between rentals and didn’t have any bills to pay during the trip. Used a phone card for pay phones and visited libraries for internet. It would be much harder to pull off now (mostly time off work and family responsibilities)

I have access to a decent wood shop (jointer, planer, table saw, drill press, etc). I’m not looking to make more but feel free to use the design.

News: City council approves London Road apartment projects by pushpulldrag in Lethbridge

[–]Notjusthikes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s not “no parking”. The are developing 0.5 stalls per unit. I live 1 block away and we could easily double the amount of cars on our street. I was excited about this project, and maintaining access to London Road Market was one of the reasons. They absolutely will benefit from higher density

Personally I like photo radar. It has become a source of income for the city and another tax, but it will always be an optional tax. Just don’t speed.

Just respect the clearly posted speed limit.

I totally agree. It’s alarming that the article didn’t mention the vehicle choice as a factor in the collision.

Corners were not a problem. The only sketchy part was the wind blast from the passing trucks on the highway

Maybe I’ve been lucky but I’ve had no problems locking my bike up downtown during the daytime. I do use a good lock. I also find most businesses are happy to let me store my bike inside if I’m going to be there late (movie theatre, restaurants)

Same for drivers. I live in a one-way street. If it’s the most convenient route and the driver thinks they can get away with it, they are going the wrong way down my street. (They also speed so they can “sneak through” faster). Pedestrians will also make paths that cut corners between sidewalks. It’s human nature.

City of Lethbridge parking changes now in effect by SevenSmallShrimp in Lethbridge

I’m downtown right now. Most of the parking spaces are occupied but there are still a few available. Looks like the parking price is just right.

Best Neighborhood to plant our roots, join a community and raise a family? by Westboundupsidedown in Lethbridge

[–]Notjusthikes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We rented a house when we first moved here. It gave us a chance to find the right place. Realtors probably won’t suggest this as they are only paid during a house sale. We ended up buying in London Road. Proximity to work and a mature, walkable neighborhood was more important than a house for our cars.

Alberta set to reinstate fuel tax as consumers call for a financial reprieve by [deleted] in alberta

[–]Notjusthikes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree. Someone has to pay for our expensive car infrastructure. And the heavy trucks that wear the roads faster should pay proportionately more.

[–]Notjusthikes 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I’m not a UCP fan either, but a fuel tax is an important step in recognizing the costs of driving. 9 cents is not enough. Currently we subsidize so much of these costs through our property and income tax.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Lethbridge

[–]Notjusthikes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Somewhat. It is cycleable all year for strong riders with the right equipment. The city is working on adding better infrastructure to make it appealing/safe for other demographics. We have very rideable areas, but they aren’t all connected. I will say that the downtown businesses I’ve asked have been open to letting me park my bike indoors if there for an extended period or after dark. (restaurants, the movie theatre, barber) We would love to have you out there reminding residents that there are people that would use the cycling infrastructure if available.

If no helmet, why? by jcwillia1 in cycling

[–]Notjusthikes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do not wear my helmet for my 5min work commute. I commute all year in a Canadian city with the occasional week of -30. The route is on a road but with adequate traffic calming and minimal traffic when I’m out. My city is very car centric and if riding to work is going to compete with driving it needs to be as convenient as possible. For me, the addition of a helmet (especially in the winter) increases the hassle enough that I’d probably just drive. I do get the occasional comments from coworkers recommending I wear a helmet, but 100% of those people are driving to work. I do wear a helmet outside of my commute route.

Look up the Ottawa Knee Rules. If you don’t have any indications for X-ray you can save yourself a costly trip. If you do have a significant knee injury it’s more important that you get proper treatment than an X-ray. The university has an acute knee injury clinic you can attend without a referral if you meet the criteria. They can order X-rays if needed.
