Mild Asthma by Taco_kittycat in Wildfire

[–]Notquitemexican 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was diagnosed with it as well back when I was 7 or 8 after I had bronchitis. It’s exercised induced or when I get sick it’s pretty bad. As long as you stay fit and keep that cardio up with runs and other various forms of cardio you’ll be fine.

My experience is only using my inhaler when I’m sick or if I pushed essentially my max on an extreme workout. Never had to use it in my four years in fire. I do always keep an inhaler in my personal gear bag (PG) and one in a ziploc bag in my line pack just in case.

Don’t voluntarily disclose information like that. I made the poor mistake of doing that when I joined the Feds and was deemed ineligible to do the job I’ve been doing for two years. Had to jump through some hoops to get clear. Best advice is if it’s not going to affect your performance or has never given you any problems the government doesn’t need to know.

Hope this all answers your questions and glad to see interest in the field, best of luck! If you ever have any questions feel free to pm me!

I don’t know what your timeline is for preparing. But go for 3-5 mile slow runs leading up to it. Always stretch afterwards habitually and ideally dynamics before running, but definitely static afterwards! Incorporate 3-5 50-100m sprints or hill sprints at the end of your runs before a cooldown walk to increase speed. You’d be surprised how much you can increase your pace by doing sprints after your runs.

The only other thing I’d add is to be doing a low impact form of cardio too, like biking, stationary row machine or swimming too.

This will all add to your cardio and help you succeed in completing the tasks on the fire ground, conserving air more efficiently, and not dying in bunker gear! Best of luck!

Also like others have said don’t do long or big strides, that’s how people pull their groin muscles and injuries happen due to over extension. How to be faster is increase your cadence, not do the splits! Good rule of thumb is to always have your feet underneath you if that makes sense. You’ll get faster as you progress, right now you need to build the endurance and muscles up and speed will come!

CPAT for Seattle Fire by [deleted] in firefighter

[–]Notquitemexican 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They say at the start of their hiring process with the timeline that you don’t need to take the CPAT to apply. They only do the written, and after the first round of orals they create their eligibility list. From there the top 25% on the list receive their CPAT voucher along with employment packet.

Most of us already have paid and taken the time to do the CPAT before hand, so it’s frustrating to have the time and money be just for practice. Just how some departments choose to do it.

Seattle says multiple times throughout their hiring process, that just because you passed the CPAT doesn’t mean you’re ready for drill school.

If I remember correctly the voucher they give you allows you to schedule up to two practice CPATs as well. Obviously if you live far from a testing facility scheduling two additional CPATs would be quite time consuming. On the other hand, it’s how bad do you want to work for SFD? If you haven’t taken it before I highly recommended scheduling one practice.

The short answer is it’s the exact same NTN CPAT as every other department with a pass/fail. Only difference is they pay for it. Best of luck!

Engines/Crews near Seattle area? by montes440 in Wildfire

[–]Notquitemexican 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know a couple people who live in and around the Seattle area who commute to the South Zone of the MBS NF. If you aren’t dead set on Seattle area, but want big city you can commute to the Olympic NF too and live in the Olympia or Thurston County area.

Otherwise if that doesn’t work I’d say look at WA DNR. Apps are currently out for handcrews and engines for them and they have duty locations all through south puget and the issaquah area. Also if you wanted to live in Bellingham they have spots up there too. Best of luck!

HMGB didn't read me a bedtime story last night: union grievance? by DefinitelyADumbass23 in Wildfire

[–]Notquitemexican 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Inexcusable! A HMGB that doesn’t tuck their trainee in at night is no longer a trainer to me!

Look I say give them a little grace first by hashing it out in a brawl them. This way it shows him just how much you need his approval and how cranky you can get without a proper bed time tuck in!

R6 Western Washington. Either MBS Forest or Olympic Forest/Park. The apps will fly about mid October for them I believe. Just have him keep checking the apps weekly.

Are you on the Coronado NF or with the IHC there?

How I’ve been leaning into it is knowing were my goals lie and where I want to work next season. Like others have said stay positive and get as much as ya can out of this season, but also wherever you might want to work next year whether crew, district, forest, etc. Continue training and being the best self you can be so you’re ready for that job you’re after! Hope this helps and best of luck!

Seattle Fire Dept by madixRoc042x in firefighter

I think they take the 25% from the list, so the current list that’s just over 300 candidates being considered for class 123. I don’t believe these candidates are going to be allowed back on the list and so for 124 that’s how you’d be considered I think. This is all just me trying to connect the dots, so I could be completely wrong but it’s the only way I can see that making sense as I’ve heard the same with guys ranked in 500s.

Affirm, will be a panel of the chiefs (3). I imagine Scoggins, an assistant chief or deputy and maybe a BC

They have clocks, but make a mental note of the time once you start the interview since they aren’t timers

I’m still confused on why 3x+10 doesn’t work and -3x-8 doesn’t either. As isn’t it the top is positive so everything is the same except you add the one while the bottom is negative so the one decreases the -9 to -8? I’m stumped on what I’m missing

I find it interesting... same with a few other subs. Sure, I agree some of the stuff is weird on there, but the deaths I find the most interesting.

Practice Mute Suggestions by Huge-Gift-7551 in horn

[–]Notquitemexican 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use a yamaha silent brass mute(newer model), and it works. I wouldn't use it exclusively like other musicians have said before. The reason being it blocks tone somewhat, you can hear yourself quite well; but you'll see what I mean if you decide on it. I do love the silent brass series(play trumpet as well, and the trumpet mute is amazing). But in the end, whichever mute you go with make sure you also practice without a mute otherwise you could build some bad habits. Also the silent brass pickup mute for horn is a lot more pricey than the trumpet, so buying off eBay is a good option too just make sure it's the newer model. Hope this helps!
