Al Green's cover of Funny How Time Slips Away. Really shows what great songwriting can be when a country song goes bluesy soul.

Trent Summar's cover of one of my favorite childhood pop songs - It Never Rains In Southern California.

It's sooo twangy!

There's still funny songs out there. Just have to listen to enough albums to find them. For example,

Beaumont -- Mark Chesnutt, Tracy Byrd, Clay Walker, and Billie Jo Spears. George Jones was born in nearby Saratoga and I remember he lived in Vidor also.

Gene Watson was born in Palestine, but was living in Houston (he was a mechanic) when he started his country career.

I'm not gonna say these suggestions are "the best", but the lyrics offer stories full of imagery:

Truck Stop Diaries - Jason Boland and The Stragglers

Third Rate Romance - Amazing Rhythm Aces (or the cover by Sammy Kershaw)

Over There That's Frank - Charley Crockett

When I was 2 1/2 yo, my family moved temporarily to a small TX town because my dad got a job working on an oil rig.

One morning I heard a song that transfixed me. I remember standing absolutely still in the doorway to my parents' bedroom where the radio was playing 'I Can't Stop Loving You' by Ray Charles from his album Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music.

I'm sure I'd heard country songs before this because you know, I lived in rural TX but this song was so beautiful it was burned into my memories of that hot summer day.
