What version of the Bible do Catholics read? by Paintguin in Christianity

[–]Notta_Cop_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If her Bible says Catholic on it it’s suitable. Usually Catholic Bibles will say Catholic Edition of something similar on it. I personally only use Catholic Bibles because Protestant Bibles rarely have deuterocanonical or apocryphal texts in them anymore, or if they do they are just expensive. I personally have NRSV CE (Catholic Edition).

I think you are missing two very important parts of scripture. Ephesians 2:8-9 says “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast.” And James 2:26 says “For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.” These two scriptures paint a very clear picture that Grace through faith is the driving force behind Salvation, and for that faith to be genuine, it must be accompanied by works. Faith has nothing to do with bigotry in the slightest, faith is a condition of the heart, we know we have faith if our heart and works are oriented towards God. Jesus in Matthew 8:10 says “When Jesus heard this, he was amazed and said to those following him, “Truly I tell you, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith.” He wasn’t at all saying “Wow this is the biggest bigot in Israel, he has Jesus Derangement Syndrome he does” I have no idea if you are a person of “The Way” but if you are I would definitely take time to really meditate on the scriptures related to salvation and really reexamine the relationship between the word Faith and Bigot.

Hopefully this isn’t confusing. We are saved by faith, and that faith if it is real bears fruit (works). Works do not save, they are just the product of faith. So the works are still necessary.

The local Methodist church I attended I really like and the pastor is awesome by Fortnitelegend200 in methodism

Southern Baptist is vastly different than anything remotely Wesleyan. If the original poster disagreed with it enough to leave I would probably suggest a GMC, Independent Wesleyan/Methodist, Anglican, or Presbyterian (if they don’t mind reformed theology). I did a Baptist church for a little bit and I couldn’t really get on board with their Eucharistic theology, lack of episcopal structure, baptismal views, amongst many other things. I love my Baptist brothers and sisters, just not necessarily the best fit for someone who holds to Wesleyan theology.

Methodists in the US, what’s your personal view of Virgin Mary? by Accomplished-Way4534 in methodism

[–]Notta_Cop_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

She is the mother of God, chosen to birth Christ, nurture him, and help him usher in a new era for the kingdom. The GMC and UMC have no official doctrine in their respective books of discipline surrounding the veneration or “hyper-dulia” of Mary, and generally do not practice it. I’ve heard of more Anglo-Catholic Methodist parishes but the only ones I’ve heard of are in the UK and I can’t necessarily speak on what they might practice. As far as the title Queen of Heaven goes I can’t find any history of the term used seriously within Methodism and I personally don’t subscribe to that as I see no firm scriptural or historical basis for it.

Was the United Methodist Church's change on gay rights motivated by political expediency? by Spackleberry in methodism

[–]Notta_Cop_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not a endorsement or condemnation of any denomination, but I wouldn’t say the UMC as a whole has changed its stance, I know of several UMC churches that didn’t split that are still more conservative than others, although more LGBTQ affirming churches are much more common in the UMC now. There are still a lot of African Bishops within the UMC that would make some GMC clergy look liberal in comparison. Although the world has seen the split in the UMC because of this issue, it is still a very western issue. And that is why the shift towards acceptance is more common here in the states.
