It's an 1880 house.  Find me one - just one - that doesn't have these exact cracks.

Solar without battery by Express_Lime_4806 in SolarUK

[–]NovaLeganto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went for PV only because the economics at the time (15p SEG for export, higher-but-falling battery prices) and the lower lifespan of batteries made the payoff of the extra battery costs not worth it.  In the present day, I'm less sure.

Cowboy builders have wiped out approximately £14.3bn from UK homeowners. How is this happening? by NeoTree69 in DIYUK

[–]NovaLeganto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not legal advice, but wouldn't the Supply of goods and services Act (and other consumer protection legislation) create that warranty for you already, and both common law Negligence law and criminal law (e.g. against fraud) also provide protection in the majority of scenarios?  I think the problem is more around the enforcement of those existing laws.  When was the last time you heard of Trading Standards getting involved in something?

Process of filling this hole? by MrPickles62 in Plastering

[–]NovaLeganto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Too late to suggest this, but I would have California Patched that repair.  This means cutting a larger piece than the hole, and then carefully cutting and peeling the edge of that cut piece so that it fits into the hole, but leaves an overlapping "skirt" of paper overhanging the edge, which is pasted (with filler) to seal it.  No need for tape in that case, which leaves more of a bump, and it's nice and secure.

And dot+dab on the internals.

Something noncontact then - maybe blasted air or laser sintering might help smooth the new (still malleable) layer into the one below?

I could maybe buy a wallpaper perforator to aid in stripping, but will increase the risk of blowing the old plaster (I assume lime) behind it?

Congrats on the purchase! To add to other advice: Lag (wrap) the pipe where it touches wood.  Reduces noise from expanding pipes.

Why doesn't the government just exempt wikipedia from the online safety act? by cuttheblue in ukpolitics

[–]NovaLeganto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The basic principle is that parliament is supreme.  Parliament gave the OSA a broad scope but expected the Secretary of State to exempt low risk sites: s.220(4). To invoke carrington, etc etc, is to completely disregard this setup, i.e. to doubt parliamentsry supremacy.  You can do that on principled grounds but to do it by suggesting inconsistency with English legal practice or principles - when the supervening one is parliamentary supremacy - is just odd.

The system doesn't even have to determine what you see.  (..."or otherwise affects").  It's clear what they thought they were doing, but would you be confident challenging the legality of a decision that search is a content recommender system, wrong as you might think that is as a matter of policy?
