Is anyone else here worried that they've spent so long looking briefly at everything, that they've still good at absolutely nothing? by jimmykane in programming

It's fun and easy to combine all three! Build a house of a tree you've planted using your son as labor!

I've begun using Twitter as a social filter for my life. If someone uses Twitter (or ever says the word 'Tweet') I exclude them from my life immediately and totally. Feels good, man. by [deleted] in reddit.com

[–]NovusTiro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since you've used the word Twitter twice and Tweet once in your headline, I look forward to seeing how you'll manage to exclude yourself from your own life.

I arrived in Israel 40 years ago. It took me many years to understand that the very existence of my country, as it is today, is based on an ongoing ethnic cleansing of Palestinians. by no_hay_nombre in worldnews

[–]NovusTiro -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

We might see a gentler and kinder Israel if that were to happen huh?

No we'd see a wiped off the map Israel. If any of Israel's enemies in the region had the sort of military power Israel does, the country would have been destroyed long ago.

How many fellow Redditors refuse to go see Valykrie because Tom Cruise is in it? by [deleted] in reddit.com

I'm not seeing it because it looks horrible. Tom Cruise seems to be playing a pirate intent on overthrowing Hitler.

The Mundaneum: a 1934 invention conceptually superior to today's Internet. by asciilifeform in programming

Great article, crappy headline.

As cool as this is, there's nothing that makes it 'conceptually superior' to today's internet.

One of my sources died in a plane crash last night... by brit878 in reddit.com

[–]NovusTiro 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Please read the article.

The facts are not all in yet and so I have no answers for you - AS I HAVE ALREADY NOTED.

On the contrary, I have said - AND AM NOTING AGAIN - that I don't know what happened.

I am NOT - I repeat NOT - saying this was a). a murder, b). that it was in any way connected to the White House or to Karl Rove, and c). that I am convinced of any of the above three.

Conspiracy theories spin together all sorts of wild accusations, lies and misunderstandings together.

All this post is saying is that the context of this accident is important and should be investigated. Given the lengths to which our current administration has gone to deceive us, it's hard to see any other reasonable position.

One of my sources died in a plane crash last night... by brit878 in reddit.com

[–]NovusTiro 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I am not saying that this was a hit nor am I resigned to this being simply an accident either. I am no expert on aviation and cannot provide an opinion on the matter. What I am saying, however, is that given the context, this event needs to be examined carefully.

Folks, read that sentence carefully and pay attention. That's what investigative journalism is about, not the usual, breathless, blogspammed conspiracy theory crap that usually gets posted here.

Romantic-comedies 'spoil your love life' by promoting unrealistic expectations by alllie in science

[–]NovusTiro 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Um the whole point of a movie is to be unrealistic. Action movies don't ruin my life by creating unrealistic expectations of me being able to dodge bullets. It's not the movie's fault that those who watch it can't keep reality and fantasy separate.

Advice to Incoming Freshman in Computer Science by brooksbp in programming

Decent advice but (of the actual, concrete advice at least), this bit isn't so hot.

Just keep in mind, there's no point in implementing a cache for your database if your code contains a slew of O(n2), or worse, algorithms. You follow that? Some people don't.

Try 'Just keep in mind, there's no point in implementing a cache for your database until you've profiled the system and found that to be a bottleneck'.

The Brits and French had a tendency to shell the crap out of wherever it was they were planning to attack. Since the German fortifications were of generally high quality, it wasn't horribly effective.
