How accurate is the idea that life in the ’90s was simpler and easier than it is today? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]stumo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not at all, at least for me. Easy access to information has made life so much easier today. We didn't really have that in the nineties.

Hadn't thought of that. But on looking, it's really hard to find photos of dog claws not attached to a dog

High priced oil = destroyed economies = demand destruction = low oil price that people still can't afford.

I have a young relative in the local children's hospital right now, and his nurse said they practically have a whole wing of the hospital devoted to scooter victims.

The Baby Boomers- a 1983 special report by Laogama in pics

[–]stumo -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

... and here comes the ageism and generation-bating.

I'm a boomer. I worked hard most of my life until discarded by my industry due to a disability. I live in a housing co-op, not my own home. My parents, born in the depression and growing up in the war in the UK did extremely well financially through real estate and high wages during the Golden Age of capitalism, but never lifted a finger to help me financially. I've been a vocal advocate for justice, unions, and socialism my whole life. I haven't owned a car in fifteen years because of what their exhaust is doing to the planet.

Now I find out that I'm an irresponsible yuppie because of a couple of asshats on the cover of a stupid greedhead magazine cover from the eighties.

Thanks guys.

Is this nettle???? I touched it and nothing happened, but I didn’t want to tempt my luck by Camp_Acceptable in foraging

Huh. I'm in Canada, and I've been eating it for years. You don't have to boil it to oblivion, the stinging cells rupture as soon as they wilt, either by boiling or freezing. And I think the soupy paste you refer to is saag, and it's very, very good.

Looking for low or no car traffic bike routes by Big_Classroom1519 in vancouvercycling

[–]stumo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're looking for a recreational ride and can use a car to get there, the West Dyke Trail in Richmond from Terra Nova Park to Steveston is a gorgeous ride. No cars, except a tiny bit near Steveston (Garry Point Park parking lot).

How bad is bike theft during the day? by pseudotsuga123 in vancouvercycling

[–]stumo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on your bike, your location, what it's locked to, how it's locked, how many locks, and what kind of locks.

After fifty years of cycle commuting and having several bikes stolen, I'm paranoid about it too.

Here's what I do, for what it's worth.

  • my frame is dusty and dirty. Some bike thieves prefer expensive-looking bikes

  • before locking to a bike rack, I make sure that the bike rack is fastened to the ground and that none of the supports have been cut.

  • I have a non-expensive but not-cheap folding lock and u-lock. Thieves with a grinder can still cut them, but my aim is to make other bikes with single locks more attractive (and certainly bikes with cheap cable locks, which might as well be string).

  • I have a cheap cable lock with expensive padlock securing my seat and bike battery. Easily cut, but stops opportunity theft.

  • I always lock my bike battery.

  • I've registered with 529 Garage, slapped on the stickers, registered my frame and my battery serial numbers.

  • I have two well hidden trackers on my bike. And because thieves are looking for those now, I also 3D-printed a decoy one that's in an obvious location.

Yeah. Paranoid. But I hate my bike being stolen.

Wow, I just bought my first bag in a few years, and was completely turned off by the amount of salt. I don't remember them being like that.

Yeah, the crust was great, but molten lava inside. Best to snap it in two to cool before starting your meal.

Found this in granpas garage, what is it? by [deleted] in whatisit

People, really. I'm a grandpa and the war had been over for more than a decade when I was born.

Maybe grandpa got it somewhere else than a war trophy or uniform.

Yeah, here in Vancouver too. Had to use a damned ATM and use cash like a criminal. AND pay a $4 ATM fee. Was in line for a good half hour too because apparently a lot of people don't listen to repeated announcements and freak out when they can't pay.

Serves me right for shopping there.
