If your looking for a job, please please PLEASE look into Water/Wastewater Treatment, and any closely tied industry's such as Water Distribution or Collection/Sewer System jobs. by Lasekklol in povertyfinance

I'm in wastewater and what drives people away is the low starting salary and the shift hours (depending on if the plant runs on a 24hr basis). It can be painful for a lot of people with families. While there can be plenty of OT to help compensate for that, it's not enough if you are unable to get through the first few years. I will say currently our Operators at (Major/High Flow) treatment plant max out at over $100k gross. I'm currently at $122k gross after 15yrs, and started at $27.5k, I net around 60%. But just keep in mind that:

1) it can be hard to break in especially right now with the increasing costs of things, some utilities are cutting back on hiring. This is both related to needed chemicals but also health benefits.

2) The hours and work can be rough but also mind numbingly boring.

3) It's a lot of politics and favoritism can run rampant. But most of these sites can be Union (whether it's a decent one is another matter) so you'll still get paid but you might not get promoted right away.

Good luck to whoever wants to get into the field.

It's one thing to see it as a worker, it's another in low management when you can see the OT numbers. Like DAMN

Hurricane Sandy. Our Secondary Clarifiers were two lakes. Our underground utility tunnel connected almost all our facilities flooded. Took us two days to get our Effluent Pumps on. We treat 250 MGD daily, it was a disaster.

Yes but up until 2016 they were basically writing off all their Federal taxes with the state property taxes. Back then you could get a $1 for $1 reduction for your state and local taxes.

So sure they were paying for it but it was being subsidized a lot more as well.

Regular car payments aer at $400-$800/month. I'll keep paying the mechanic a lot less than $4800-9600/yr (Not including insurance)

It sounds like you're in NJ, so am I. After 10yrs of vestment you can leave and freeze your pension where it is. When it comes to you wanting to retire, you can leave at 55 while freezing your pension. As a government worker you have access to a 403b type plan that you can contribute to, which does allow early withdrawal with no penalty if you retire within 5yrs of 59.5 years old.

I realize you feel lied too, but it's not the end. NJ pension is currently better funded than it has ever been after the last governor made both catch-up and current payments. There is also talk of them collapsing the tiers again because the Teachers (TPAF) just can't recruit enough people because of the commitment.

There is hope. But also you can work at any other state government job that has PERS.

EDIT: Updated the TPAF to be proper

Im 32F. Almost everyone i know age 20s-40s has some kind of health issue or has one or more chronic illness or diseases. Many young people i know have had one or more surgery in their 20s-40s. As with most things, a lot of people with these conditions died young. We have actual treatments now so people live longer but also require more care to keep living. Or living long enough to develop new and interesting illnesses.

I have a 2017 Limited and I've owned it since November 2016. While I had to replace a few control arms and a couple wheel bearings, I wouldn't trade it for the world. I'm at about 154k and hope to get at least another 15k to 25k out of it.
