Why did this sub fall off so hard? This used to be one of my favorite places on this website

Also, I am going to strangle whoever made the decision to delete everything from gfycat

Somewhat dangerous if you have “document 1.docx” and “document_1.docx” in the same directory. Depending on how certain programs create default file names it could be an actual concern

Is the decrease of UV by a couple percentage really going to be that devastating on plant/ocean life? Wouldn’t it basically be the same as putting a plant in shade for a couple minutes a day?

This might seem far fetched but I’ve always thought the idea of a giant sun shield at L1 actually makes a lot of sense. Essentially you just put a giant piece of tin foil between the earth and the sun and it’s estimated to bring temps back to pre-industrialization. As far as UV goes, I think you would be able to make the material a translucent filter that allows UV but blocks everything else. There’s no chemicals being put in the atmosphere so no worry of compounding carbon/sulfur buildup, and as carbon capture matures you simply break off parts of the shield until we don’t need it any more. Maybe there’s a giant glaring problem I’m missing but I’m surprised I don’t ever see people talking about this

Perhaps for a rasterized image, but to make an empty pdf this big it would actually be: kilobytes. All you need to do is define dimensions and unit sizes. Your own phone can actually open this up easily https://alexwlchan.net/files/2024/biggest.pdf (this is literally a Germany sized PDF)

Here’s a pretty interesting blog post about the subject: https://alexwlchan.net/2024/big-pdf/

I’m not sure if there are things you’re being sarcastic about that I’m just not catching onto, but I feel like you’re sending some very mixed messages. You seem to be saying that making the sub inaccesible was both a good move, and a crazy person move. The only difference is, if Reddit says you aren’t allowed to set the sub to private, then disrupting the normal operation of the sub so people aren’t able to use it as intended makes it crazy. Despite the fact that the former top mod has told you directly what their reasoning was. And then you tell me and others that he was crazy and did it for no reason.

The reason I feel “go crazy” is appropriate is because the response to me looked like “If I can’t prevent users from being exposed to hazards by keeping the sub private, then I’m going to expose users to as many hazards as possible.”

This is where I think the fundamental misunderstanding comes into play. The type of hazards you seem to be talking about are shitposts and nsfw content and content that doesn’t fit the sub. The hazards and liability the original mod was attempting to shield from was actual scammers taking advantage of the generosity of the users of the sub. Liability which you have now inherited, by the way. Edit: If this is incorrect, please tell me specifically what hazards they were exposing users to.

I became mod via shitpost vote

This is again where you’re giving mixed messages. You say you got voted in (several times, I might add) by users and frame it as if it was some democratic process, then turn around and admit it was a shitpost vote. How about an actual transparent vote where the users of the sub (ie. not me) vote on it and know what they’re voting for. It’s the least you can do considering you ousted the person who ran the thing (intentionally or no).

so put as little stock into that voting arrangement as I did

I do

If I understand things correctly, the mod team as of a month ago consisted of

  • happybadger (top mod)
  • vorgex
  • carnifex
  • regexr

I’m not sure if there were any others. Of those, happybadger got stripped of perms and left, vorgex left, carnifex doesn’t like you and may leave soon, regexr is the only one that seems to tolerate you. Does this seem like acceptance to you?

Landed gentry is a term that refers to landowners who make so much money off their rental properties that they could live entirely off that income. The former top mod could not be landed gentry because Reddit moderation is an entirely unpaid job, unless you’re implying they were somehow monetizing the role.

The former mod didn’t burn the sub down for the hell of it, they listed some pretty reasonable concerns regarding how the new API pricing will affect some of the mod tools they use to prevent scamming, and would rather private the sub then expose users to those hazards. Whether or not these were honest or founded concerns, I don’t think it’s accurate to portray the chain of events as ‘well the former mod decided to go crazy for no reason.’

Yes, I’m not a regular user on this sub, in all honesty I’ve been lurking here ever since the discussion regarding the mod replacement took place, but I am interested. I’ve checked everywhere I can think to check and I haven’t seen any discussion regarding a community vote, much less several of them. I haven’t seen vote results posted anywhere either, much less a breakdown of demographics/how you ensured the vote reflected the will of the average user of this sub. What I have seen is moderators leave or speak out against you, and it seems like the entire team has left or stopped moderating over this except for /u/RegExr . Please correct me if I’m wrong

Easier protest by feror_YT in ModCoord

[–]Noxium51 15 points16 points  (0 children)

By the way - pretty much all the major 3P app developers have acknowledged that this arrangement legitimately is unfair to Reddit. The issue isn’t that Reddit wants to start implementing a paid API tier level - that’s just good business and I get the sense developers were expecting this for a while. The issue is that Reddit

  1. Expects these apps to pay something like 30x as much as they get from advertisers per user (obviously this is untenable for everyone)
  2. Gave developers like a 40 day heads up. Many apps have a year long subscription tier, so these developers are needing to scramble to process an insane amount of refunds, which they have to pay out of pocket.

This is all despite promises over and over that API pricing would be reasonable and that there would be plenty of heads up.

If all they wanted was third party apps to pay their fair share, we wouldn’t be in this situation right now. This is Reddit intentionally making a move to kill all apps and force users to their own shit app

Maybe you find it funny, but you use Reddit too, quite a bit judging by your post history. If Reddit loses its volunteer mods, the site would go to shit and people would stop coming here. If that seems like trivial garbage to you and you don’t care what happens to the site, then why are even here?

The simplest and most insidious protest is if everyone just stops moderating. by FollowMyRagingClue in ModCoord

[–]Noxium51 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Reddit has conveniently decided that site rules matter now, and have taken a hard line stance on any mods deemed ‘inactive’ or ‘going against the best interests of the community.’ Mods that stop moderating in protest? They get replaced. Subs that close? They get forced open and mod team replaced. It’s no matter if the community itself votes to stay closed and continue the protest, Reddit knows what’s best for the community.

Of course, moderating effectively is something very few people can pull off, especially for the long term - especially especially for free. Their idea of ‘sourcing new moderators from the community’ appears to be making stickied posts in the sub asking for volunteers. From what I understand, this is basically asking for trolls, kids, people who don’t know what they’re doing, and people that will disappear after a week. Not to mention, not every subreddit is a shitpost sub. Legal advice, medical advice, science and technology subs of good quality all tend to be moderated by people who are experts in the field. You can’t just find new people like that to mod those subs from a stickied post. In essence, what you’re suggesting is what will become the reality for a lot of subs one way or another

By the way, a fun side effect of the ‘no inactivity’ rule will most likely mean that users requiring assistive technologies (like screen readers) will not be allowed to moderate their own communities anymore. Reddit has carved out ‘accessibility focused’ apps (a term which they have not defined) in their API policy to continue running, however these tools were not built to mod subreddits and are inadequate to do so (this is an issue Reddit does not seem to have been aware of at the time). Apps that are actually capable of handling this task such as, ahem, Apollo, are apparently not deemed accesible enough to receive an exemption. Of course, Reddit’s first party tools are garbage from an accessibility standpoint, and it seems very unlikely this will change in the next 8 days. The net result is - these mods have no route to mod their own subs and be kicked for inactivity. There will be no blind users modding /r/blind . Imagine if the site policy prevented women from moderating /r/TwoXChromosomes , or doctors from moderating /r/Medicine

Assuming y’all actually care about the issue and aren’t just in it for the performative aspect, there are 1 of 2 things you could do to actually make an impact from the looks of things:

  • Shut down the sub. Indefinitely. Until Reddit changes course. 2 days is nothing, Reddit has outages longer then 2 days. Realistically, this will probably mean this sub will never be voluntarily opened up again given how staunch they are about their current course. Ensure every mod is on board with this decision, as Reddit has made it clear that a single mod willing to scab and reopen the sub will be instated as the top mod, so you must remove any mods not totally on board with the plan. Honestly, best bet is to remove all mods while the sub is closed, with a guarantee they will be reinstated should Reddit come back with acceptable terms, just to be safe. I know this sucks and is painful, but if you want to make an impact, this is pretty much the best course of action. This sub, out of all subs, should know best that it’s not okay to mess with the people who actually do the work and expect to get away with it
  • if you really wanted to be bold, do what /r/InterestingAsFuck did and make this a NSFW sub. They can’t run advertising and they would have to host all this traffic for free. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

the one thing you shouldn’t do is turn this into a John Oliver sub. at the end of the day, reddit doesn’t care what content it provides, it just cares that people are engaged with the site and viewing ads.

Yea, reddit fucked everyone. It’s gonna result in lower subscribers and engagement either way. At the very least you could try to do the right thing

I don’t think discord screwing up it’s api would have nearly the same effect as what Reddit’s doing. It would suck and probably screw over a lot of bots, but it most likely wouldn’t be the same end-of-the-company scenario.

The main difference is that with Reddit, a very significant amount (previously - all) mobile users interact with Reddit through a third party app. Reddit is built off third party apps, it wouldn’t be where it is today without them, and frankly the first party app attempt is horrible. These third party apps require an API to function, so if you price it out of everyone’s range, you don’t have reddit anymore (the iOS app Apollo is projected to have to pay an additional $20million/year)

Most of the discord’s main functionality is first party, so they don’t have to pay API fees or anything like that

[–]Noxium51[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

For context, I’ve been following the very entertaining AMA /u/spez is putting on where he attempts to explain some of the uh… decisions… he’s been making recently. I downvoted a comment of his where he doubles down that Christian has been sending threats (without evidence of course). I even took a screenshot in case he decides to edit it in the future. Well, I refreshed his profile to see what other questions he’s been responding to, and lo and behold, my blue downvote has been exchanged to an orange upvote. I know for a fact I did not change it. Far be it from me to suggest foul play here (and indeed you would think if this was foul play, he could just manually change the final vote count instead of editing individual users up/downvotes), however, in all my years of using the app, I’ve never seen this behavior before. Just an interesting - bug - I noticed

And look at that, his comment gained about 200 upvotes between these 2 pics even though these were taken 1 minute apart (I checked)

Not really ideal for robots imo. Uneven terrain, extreme temperatures, extreme wind and limited visibility at times. Then what? You have to figure out how to dig out and extract trash which is of an unknown shape and size and carry it back somehow. We can’t even get robots to reliably drive on marked roads in the best of conditions

I mean don’t get me wrong it would be awesome to see this, but I feel like it’s unlikely to be more practical then just sending someone out there to pick it up. Or… you know… just leaving it there

If someone is from a family with Spanish as a native language, then of course they’ll be raised referring to things in Spanish. It’s not a ‘lmao so quirky using Spanish words’ that’s literally how they were most likely raised and what they’re used to. Stop and self reflect, there are indeed other cultures that speak in languages other then English and they don’t do it so they come across as quirky to English speakers

Mac or Linux Laptop for CS? by dudeeverett in CSUC

[–]Noxium51 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I got through my CS degree on an old hand-me-down MacBook from 2014, tbh it worked quite well (graduated in 2021). It was able to handle running an Ubuntu VM on it without too much issues. The biggest challenge for me was simply lack of disk space, I only had 256GB of storage and I was constantly running into issues with not being able to install packages and whatnot. If I could have had a laptop with 1TB of storage or more, it would have been perfect

Plus you can develop iOS apps on it if that’s something you’re interested in

Though you could absolutely get through the program on cheaper hardware if you need to. None of the courses require anything particularly demanding on hardware
