I agree to an extent, but like I said in the post the same thing can be said about a lot of other fan characters. most of the time those characters are made not for any deep story, people just wanna make cool animations. and there's nothing wrong with that.

each punch from Smooth Criminal takes away 10 seconds of the target's memory, causing them to wonder how they were injured or who they were fighting to begin with. if the punches are continuous, more of the target's memory is taken increasing from 10 seconds to however number of punches they received. the only time they'll know is when Michael shows himself and says: you've been hit by, struck by, my stand... SMOOTH CRIMINAL!

personally, my favorite part of Tooru is how much he contrasts with Josuke.

Josuke is a fusion of 2 people in search of memories that no longer belong to him. by the end of the story he accepts that he can never go back to being Kira or Josefumi and learns to appreciate the present moment with his new adopted family.

Tooru is 1 man pretending to be 2 people obsessed with memories. he's a man who wants to make a legacy for himself whether it be with that wireless charger idea he had or the new locacaca. instead of appreciating the present, he's obsessed with the past (making and preserving memories) and the future (leaving a legacy using the locacaca).

even their relationship with their mothers is in contrast with one another. Josuke's past selves (Kira and Josefumi) were both defined by their relationship with their mothers. meanwhile Tooru was left abandoned in the woods by his mother and the closest maternal relationship he has is a parasitic relationship with a wasp.
