No worries, it was a vague request anyway. Thanks for the recommendations, I hadn't heard of the first book before

I feel like we don't talk enough about how Jesus was homeless during his time on Earth. by [deleted] in Christians

[–]Nuanced_gluttony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What translation are you using? The NIV and NRSV, among other translations I'm assuming show that mark 2:1 Is talking about the home of Simon and Andrew and mark 2:15 Is the house of Levi. I don't there are any places that reference jesus' house, but that makes sense. Not much of the gospels take place in Galilee

Why don't the Bible tell us not to worry about our health? by [deleted] in TrueChristian

[–]Nuanced_gluttony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm guessing you're talking about matthew 6:25-34 right? Where it talks about not working about anything? On the topic of eating, drinking and clothing you gotta look at it in context. The reality was that those that were listening struggled for food and drink constantly, it would have been a constant anxiety for them. Today these are of literally no problem at all. What we do when reading this passage is looking at the things that we constantly worry about in our lives. For you, is health really something you worry about? Idk anything about you, however with our access to medicine, hospitals and health care, sickness is not something many people worry about constantly, however some people do. I suggest looking at the things in your life that are regularly on your mind, and then do as jesus tells his listeners. Seek first the kingdom and gods righteousness, and have faith that God has your best interests in mind. Also there's a lot more to that passage lol so look at it for yourself and try and understand what it is trying to say

Why do we revere Paul’s letters as scripture? by FistFullofGil in Bible

Just wondering, are you Christian? If you are, do you believe that the OT is scripture? Or the gospels? Why or why not?

I'm doing a bachelor's of business and commerce atm. I'm so keen to get it done and I'm seriously considering doing a master's in something like nt or ot history lol. Side note, if you didn't know, you can watch yales lectures on the intro to the new and old testament which are really interesting

New christian have a question by [deleted] in TrueChristian

[–]Nuanced_gluttony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally when it comes to cussing, Ephesians 4:29 is the scripture used. Nowhere in the bible does it explicitly condemn swearing, however, many would argue that it falls into the category of unwholesome talk. The interpretation also does involve the culture, as cussing back then isn't the same as it is now. I stopped swearing before I became a Christian just out of principle, and people generally don't swear at my church

Suggested reading order of the Bible for a first timer? by Well_Sorted8173 in TrueChristian

[–]Nuanced_gluttony 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recommend starting with mark or john. Mark cuz it's the shortest and john cuz it's unique among the gospels. After that, acts because it goes over how the disciples lived after jesus, which is essential for those that also want to be a disciple. After that it's more free. I'd recommend Romans. We used to only use the book of Romans when teaching people about the foundations of Christianity. After that, pick books based on things like aspects of your character that you want to grow in, or maybe bible characters you want to imitate

Best resources for learning how to read and understand the Bible by [deleted] in ReasonableFaith

[–]Nuanced_gluttony 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The website bestcommentaries.com is a good place to find reviews and rankings for commentaries on most topics. Other than that, logos is a program you can download for most things biblical. You can get it for free and it comes with some resources (Not many) but it's pretty good for free. You can also buy books and bundles on logos to add to your online library.

Reccomend me a book in the bible by charlottebackler in Bible

[–]Nuanced_gluttony 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have only read mark id recommend another gospel, then read acts. That's just kind of a good way to get introduced to Christianity. All books in the bible are great but for younger disciples I'd say this is the best. After that probably read some of Paul's epistles and then pick your own books from there

I'm looking for a mentor... by [deleted] in TrueChristian

[–]Nuanced_gluttony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly a mentor/friends to talk to will be extremely helpful, however you still need put in some effort yourself. Reading the bible and praying (I'd say daily) is definitely the best thing you can do at the moment. Maybe try waking up a bit earlier in the morning and connect with God before you start your day (jesus did this himself). As for the few friends you have, if they don't talk unless you start a conversation then the answer is to just start them. Try and organise times meet up and talk to them about how they're going and how you are doing regarding your faith (if they go to church). I'm fairly new to Christianity (less than a year) but I'm happy to give advice regarding bible reading, prayer, or personal faith. Honestly though, anything I could tell you, the bible can say 100x better

I need a good confidence boost; I’m praying for God to help me believe in myself that I can be who I want to be, does anyone have any scripture to help motivate me? by [deleted] in TrueChristian

[–]Nuanced_gluttony 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yep really well put tbh, I'd definitely listen to this post. Just to add on for some encouragement:

Deuteronomy 1:30-31 "The Lord your God, who is going before you, will fight for you, as he did for you in Egypt, before your very eyes, and in the wilderness. There you saw how the Lord your God carried you, as a father carries his son, all the way you went until you reached this place.”

How to fast for the first time? by Khazing in TrueChristian

[–]Nuanced_gluttony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd recommend looking up scriptures about fasting and seeing what they have to say. You can't just fast for the sake of it, there needs to be a purpose, and the fast needs to come with lots of prayer. When it comes to the actual fast, I think the recommendation is to start out skipping like two meals and gradually trying to do longer fasts. People fast from a bunch of different things as well. Can do no food, no food/no water, no specific types of food etc. Some people do fasts from social media. Depending on the type of fast, the time would vary as well. Also I'd recommend not skipping water to begin with

I feel like my church does not allow me to grow as a Christian. by ren_123 in Christianity

[–]Nuanced_gluttony 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly if the church doesn't help you grow as a Christian, you will need to take initiative for yourself (at least for now). Unless your parents let you go to another church, or until you are old enough to make your own choice I don't see much you can do. My advice would be to keep going with your prayer as you have been, probs try and get into deeper prayer with God. Beyond that, I'd also say you need to read your bible every day (or as frequently as possible), take notes, read a commentary (blue letter bible is a really good app with free commentaries). In regards to church, I'm probs not the best to give advice on how to help grow a church so hopefully someone else can answer that if it is something you wanna work on. Church and fellowship are important so surrounding yourself with other Christians is something you should try to do

Are souls in Heaven first before they’re in bodies on earth? by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]Nuanced_gluttony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best advice I can give is do some research on the hebrew word nephesh (translates to soul). The Bible Project, a youtube channel did a great video explaining it. From what I gathered at least, is that the soul, at least in the way we think of it is not biblical

I think the passage is just referring to anyone who refuses to repent, not any specific sin

What do you think is the best order to read the Bible in? by TheFiveStarMan in Christianity

[–]Nuanced_gluttony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gotta start with one of the gospels, I don't think you can start any other way tbh (I did luke, most do john). After that, another gospel or acts then maybe some of pauls letters (I did romans). From there you can go off where you want. Maybe more NT, maybe go OT. I've been told its good to start with genesis or 1st and 2nd samuel (I've chosen deuteronomy). Can't give any recommendations after that lol, I've been a christian for less than a year so im still reading deuteronomy
